[Derivative spectroscopy and its use in sanitary hygiene control].
An analytical method is developed for defining the residual quantities of rodenticide "Brodifacoum" (talon) used in the control of harmful field rodents and especially for species Microtus. The method is based on extracting the pesticide with chloroform and making use of spectrophotometry in the ultraviolet field in intervals 340-240 nm. The second derivative of the absorption is utilized as well as the band with maximum 288 nm and minimum 228 nm. The peak height in this interval is in proportion to the concentration of the brodifacoum. When analysing residual waters, reservoirs, and soil the elimination of impeding substances is performed by thin-layer chromatography. The "cis" and "trans" form of brodifacoum is jointly determined by spectrophotometry. At thin-layer chromatography processing the two forms are separated. Sensitivity of the method 0.5 microgram/cm3 (in chloroform solution). Reproduction (as coefficient of variation) 5%. A thin-layer chromatographic method is recommended for semiquantitative determination of brodifacoum.
Effects of alpha-chlorohydrin on the reproductive organs of the male bandicoot rat (Bandicota bengalensis).
The present study was undertaken to determine the effects of alpha-chlorohydrin at a dosage of 50, 100 or 150 mg/kg body weight and were killed 2 or 10 days later. alpha-chlorohydrin at employed dose levels induced selective damage to the germinal epithelium which seemed to be confined to one "cycle" only. No permanent epididymal lesions were observed in any of the treated bandicoots even following a toxic dose of the drug. Administration of this compound at a dose level of 50 or 100 mg/kg also had no effect on the weight of the testis or sex accessory organs or fructose levels in coagulating glands when compared to controls. These data indicate that the alpha-chlorohydrin possibly acts directly on the testis without influencing the normal endocrine status of the animal.

Historical histopathological control data for laboratory rodents: valuable treasure or worthless trash?
The reasons for variation in longevity and disease incidence in untreated control animals in chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity tests in laboratory rodents are reviewed and discussed. Genetic drift, dietary composition, caloric intake, age of animals at the termination of studies, the skill, experience and diligence of the pathologist, the diagnostic criteria used and the appropriateness of statistical procedures are considered to be the most important sources of variation. It is suggested that more attention needs to be paid to the sources of nutrients in animal diets and that 'closed formula' diets should be eschewed. The reliability of historical data depends critically on the extent to which 'like' can be compared with 'like'. The most important variables in relation to histopathological data are considered in this context.
