Hair mercury speciation as a function of gender, age, and body mass index in inhabitants of the Negro River basin, Amazon, Brazil.

Human mercury contamination can be monitored through hair analysis of mercury's inorganic and organic form as methylmercury (Me-Hg). Hair total mercury and Me-Hg were studied in a Negro River fish-eating population in relation to age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). This riverbank population eats fish at least twice a day and is exposed to high levels of Me-Hg. Total mercury ranged from 1.51 microg/g to 59.01 microg/g, with only 21% of the sampled population having Hg concentration of less than 10 microg/g hair. The mean percentage of Me-Hg was 71.3% (range 34% to 100%) of the total mercury in hair. No statistically significant differences were found in regard to age groups (children and adults) or BMI. However, women had significantly lower total mercury in hair than men, but the percentage of Me-Hg was not significantly different. Women in fertile age (15-40 years) had hair total mercury ranging from 1.65-32.63 microg/g, and 65% in this subgroup had hair mercury above 10 microg/g hair. The percentage of Me-Hg concentration in hair of this freshwater, fish-eating population is comparable to populations eating ocean fish from different parts of the world and does not seem to be affected by age, gender, and BMI.

Chromosomes of three freshwater stingrays (Rajiformes Potamotrygonidae) from the Rio Negro basin, Amazon, Brazil.

Potamotrygonidae is the representative family of South American freshwater elasmobranchs. It is a monophyletic group containing 20 species grouped into three genera. Three species belonging to two genera of this family were collected from the middle Negro River, Amazonas, Brazil, and studied cytogenetically: Paratrygon aiereba, Potamotrygon motoro and Potamotrygon orbignyi. Paratrygon aiereba presented 2n = 90 chromosomes and 4M+2SM+10ST+74A. Both species of Potamotrygon presented 2n = 66 chromosomes and differed in their chromosomal formulas: P. motoro had 18M+12SM+10ST+26A and P. orbignyi had 22M+10SM+8ST+26A. No sex heteromorphism was detected. The Fundamental Number (FN) was 106 for the three species. A system of multiple NORs was found in the three species, but with interspecific differences in terms of location and position of the active Ag-NORs sites. Paratrygon aiereba presented only four sites on the short arms of two chromosomal pairs, both in terminal regions. Potamotrygon motoro presented seven sites, on the long and short arms, all in terminal regions of non-homologous chromosomes; P. orbignyi presented eight sites on the long arms, all in terminal regions, of non-homologous chromosomes. The constitutive heterochromatin was in pericentromeric regions of all chromosomes, and no significant interspecific difference was found in relation to this marker.

Similarities of Negro and Caucasian fetal extremity lengths in the interval from 9 to 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Foot, leg, and arm measurements were compared from 599 electively aborted fetuses of Negro and Caucasian women who had reliable menstrual dates and agreement between dates and uterine size. When compared by week, no significant racial differences were detected in the means of any of these measurements between 9 and 20 menstrual weeks of pregnancy. The combined, corrected data provided smoother curves than those previously published. The following formulas are recommended for weeks 9 to 20 of pregnancy, where W = weeks and F, L, and A are the foot, leg, and arm measurements in centimeters: W = 4.5261 + 11.937(F) - 4.4895(F2) + 0.71583(F3); W = 5.9957 + 5.7279(L) - 1.2246(L2) + 0.11880(L3); W = 5.4007 + 5.0305(A) - 0.93540(A2) + 0.079022(A3).

Mesiodistal crown dimension of the permanent dentition of American Negroes.

A study of the mesiodistal crown dimension was conducted on the teeth of 162 American Negroes, equally divided between males and females. A total of 3,980 teeth were measured. Teeth were measured from the plaster casts by means of Boley gauges. The sample was drawn from a growth study, private practice, and a dental clinic. The mean width of the teeth of males and females was reported. The teeth of males were larger than those of females for each type of tooth in both arches, although they exhibited a similar pattern of tooth size. The maxillary first premolars were larger than the second premolars, while the mandibular second premolars were larger than the first premolars. The first molars were larger than the second molars in both the maxillary and mandibular arches in both sexes. The ratio of the mandibular dentition ot the maxillary dentition was 94 per cent in both sexes. The ratio of the sum of the widths of the canines and incisors of the mandibular dentition to those of the maxillary dentition was 77 per cent. Also, the ratio of the mandibular incisors to the maxillary incisors was 71 per cent in both sexes.

The use of regression constants in estimating tooth size in a Negro population.

A study of a sample of 105 Negro children and adolescents, residents of Connecticut, was undertaken to determine the degree of correlation between mandibular tooth size and the size of the canines and premolars. The correlation between the total mesiodistal width of the mandibular permanent incisors and that of the maxillary or mandibular canine and first and second premolars was found to be 0.63 and 0.71, respectively. Further, regression constants were determined in an attempt to estimate the buccal segments from the mandibular incisors.

Fish mercury bioaccumulation as a function of feeding behavior and hydrological cycles of the Rio Negro, Amazon.

The acidic black waters of the Rio Negro are unimpacted by anthropogenic sources and yet, are characterized by fish containing relatively high Hg concentrations. Regular annual flooding alters the aquatic environment, thereby affecting fish feeding strategies. We studied the impact of annual flooding on fish-Hg bioaccumulation. Tucunarés (Cychla spp, carnivorous), Peixe-cachorro (Hydrolycus scomberoides, carnivorous), Traíra (Hoplias malabaricus, carnivorous), Piranha-branca (Serrasalmus aff. eigenamanni, carnivorous), Piranha-preta (Serrasalmus rhombeus, carnivorous), Acará (Acarichthys heckellii, omnivorous), Aracú (Leporinus friderici, omnivorous), Orana-preta (Hemiodus unimaculatus, omnivorous), Sardinha (Triportheus elongatus, omnivorous), Branquinha (Potamorhina latior, detritivorous), Jaraqui-escama-fina (Semaprochilodus taeniurus, detritivorous), and Pacú-branco (Myleus torquatus, herbivorous) were studied during high (July) and low waters (February) and categorized by body mass. Regardless of hydrological period, ranges of total-Hg concentrations were higher for carnivorous than for omnivorous, detritivorous and herbivorous species. Some species (Traíra, Sardinha, Peixe-cachorro, Piranha branca, Piranha preta) showed changes in feeding patterns as indicated by an inverse trend of Hg bioaccumulation with season. Species with similar trends of Hg bioaccumulation showed higher Hg concentrations during the flooded season (Aracú, Pacú branco and Orana preta) and some had lower Hg (Acará, Branquinha and Tucunarés). Fish Hg concentration is species specific and reflects changes in feeding-behavior dominance brought by annual inundation.

Mercury levels in tissues of Giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) from the Rio Negro, Pantanal, Brazil.

This research reports the first data on mercury levels found in Giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) from South America. Mercury concentrations were analyzed from different organs/tissues of two animals found dead floating on the water of the Rio Negro in the Pantanal, Brazil. The mean mercury concentration ranged from 2.94 to 3.68 microg/g in hair, from 1.52 to 4.3 microg/g in liver, and from 1.11 to 4.59 microg/g in kidney and was 0.17 microg/g in muscle samples. In comparison with other research, there is no evidence of contamination in these animals and mercury concentrations in tissues appeared to be at levels below those associated with toxicity.

Nasopalatine duct cyst. An aggressive condition in adolescent Negroes from South Africa?

A retrospective study of the clinical and radiographic features of 51 nasopalatine duct cysts has been undertaken. Of these cysts 33 were in males (64.7%) and 18 in females (35.3%). The age range was 9--67 years (mean 32 years) with most cases being detected between the second and fourth decades. All of the subjects aged less than 20 years were South African Negroes and the lesions found in this group were invariably over 3.5 cm in diameter and rapidly growing. The average size for all of the cysts (after taking in 19% radiographic enlargment factor into account) was 3.5 cm in greatest diameter. The most common signs were: palatal swelling (88.2%), tooth displacement (78.4%) and sub-labial swelling (17.6%). Root resorption was found in only two of the 40 cysts which encroached upon lamina dura. No recurrences occurred following marsupialization or enucleation.

Reduction deformities, twinning and mortality in Brazilian Whites and Negroes.

A series of house-to-house surveys in Central Brazil revealed 32 cases of reduction deformities of the limbs (brachydactyly, synbrachydactyly, ectrodactyly, amely, adactyly, achiry, apody, etc.) among 58,761 births (0.54 per thousand, being 0.66 per thousand among Whites and 0.43 per thousand among Mulattoes and Negroes). No sibship was found with two or more equally affected singleton members. One case of concordance among twins is referred. There were no parity, inbreeding, race and sex effects. Both hands and both feet were also equally affected. Precocious mortality and twinning were significantly higher among affected individuals. The presence of cleft lip and palate in one of our index patients may also reflect an etiological relationship. Among the sibs, the total incidence of congenital malformations was similar to that generally accepted for general populations.

Cerro Negro bitumen degradation by a consortium of marine benthic microorganisms.

Cerro Negro bitumen, separated from an Orimulsion sample, was incubated for up to 120 days with sediments collected at a petroleum-impacted site in Tampa Bay, Florida. Biodegradation conditions were optimized by increasing bitumen surface area, continuous agitation on a shaker apparatus, use of a complete growth medium, and maintenance at 37 degrees C. Aerobic degradation conditions were promoted by maintaining sediment contact with the laboratory atmosphere. Bitumen recovered in solvent extracts when compared to autoclaved controls decreased by up to 40% during the first 56 days. There was no detectable change after this. Molasses addition and use of a culture enriched from the sediments did not change the extent or rate of decrease in bitumen recovery. Chemical fractionation of bitumen control and degraded bitumen showed that aromatic and aliphatic fractions were depleted by approximately equals 50%. Accumulation of polars was observed; however, the apparent increase was relatively small when compared to the mass loss of the other fractions. Selected biomarker ratios were not affected by incubation indicating their utility for fingerprinting the source bitumen in environmental samples. PAH distribution in the aromatic fraction favored the higher alkyl-homologues with the relative degree of alkylation increasing as the mass of bitumen recovered decreased with degradation. The study showed that up to 40% of the bitumen was bioaccessible and that bioremediation may be a treatment option for sediments contaminated with bitumen by an Orimulsion spill.

Occurrence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in dogs in the urban area of Monte Negro, Rondônia, Brazil.

The prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in dogs in an urban area of the municipality of Monte Negro, Rondônia, Brazil, was evaluated using an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Blood samples were taken from 157 dogs living in 85 of the 94 blocks of the city. A seropositivity of 76.4% (120/157) was found and associations between the prevalence and the variables sex, age, type of raising and food were studied. The prevalence tended to increase with age (p < 0.05); dogs over 24 months old had 85.5% (100/117) positivity, compared with 50% (20/40) in dogs less than 24 months old, showing postnatal exposure to the agent. It was also observed that dogs with access to the streets showed greater prevalence (84.9%) than companion animals (58.8%). There was no association between sex or the type of food (home-made or commercial) and anti-T. gondii antibodies.

Trachoma and ethnic diversity in the Upper Rio Negro Basin of Amazonas State, Brazil.

A trachoma survey was carried out among three culturally different populations of the Upper Rio Negro Basin in the Brazilian rain forest of Amazonas State. The results indicate that trachoma is prevalent in the region, reaching hyperendemic levels (between 50.9% and 56.4%) in all communities studied. However, the severity of the disease appears to be related to the ethnic origin of the tribes, following the rank of social and cultural values that regulate the complex interactions between the Indian groups of the region.

Mercury in hair and in fish consumed by Riparian women of the Rio Negro, Amazon, Brazil.

This work puts the risks and benefits of a mercury acquisition through a fish-dominated diet in the context of the other endemic health problems in the Amazon. Fish consumption rate was assessed after determining mercury concentrations in the most consumed fish and in hair of women at fertile age (15 to 45 years of age), living in remote localities of the Rio Negro basin (not impacted by gold mining). Fish-meals were consumed once a day (7.1%) but in most cases (78.6 %) at least twice a day with an estimated mean fish consumption rate of 170.5 g (range 23 to 293 g). The fish-species most preferred were Tucunarés (Cichla spp), Pacus (Mylossoma aureum and Myleus micans), Piranhas (Sarrasalmus spp), Cará (Satanoperca jurupari), Jaraquí (Semaprochilodus taeniurus). The mean Hg concentration in these species varies widely (38 to 592 ng g(- 1)) but 27% of samples had Hg concentrations above 500 ng g(- 1), and only 7% were above 1000 ng g(- 1). The hair-Hg concentrations ranged from 6.5 to 32.6 microg g(- 1) with 82% of them having concentrations above 10 microg g(- 1) (w.w.) hair. Hair-Hg concentrations were positively correlated with women's age (r=0.4500; P=0.0111). Clinical evaluation did not detected symptoms (paraparesis, tremor, numbness of limbs, sensory disturbances) compatible with Minamata disease, but there was a high (71%) incidence of clinical history of malaria. Fish is an abundant natural resource, rich in essential nutrients and important to the diet of 'ribeirinhos' of Brazilian Amazonia. We hypothesize that lack of basic medical care in these communities outweighs risk of naturally occurring fish-MMHg. Therefore food habits based on fish consumption is part of a successful strategy for survival and should be considered as a health asset.

Protection by natural blackwater against disturbances in ion fluxes caused by low pH exposure in freshwater stingrays endemic to the Rio Negro.

Stenohaline freshwater stingrays (Potamotrygon spp.) are endemic to the very dilute (Na(+), Cl(-), Ca2(+) 300 micromol L(-1) in reference water (low DOC) to about 100 micromol L(-1) in blackwater (high DOC). In reference water, both JNain and JClin were inhibited >90%, both JNaout and JClout more than doubled, and J(Amm) did not change at pH 4.0. In blackwater, the inhibition of influxes was attenuated, the increases in outflux did not occur, and J(Amm) increased by 60% at pH 4.0. Addition of 100 micromol L(-1) Ca(2+) to reference water prevented the increases in JNaout and JClout and allowed J(Amm) to increase at pH 4.0, which demonstrates that the gills are sensitive to Ca(2+). However, addition of Ca(2+) to blackwater had no effect on the responses to pH 4.0. Addition of commercial humic acid to reference water did not duplicate the effects of natural Rio Negro blackwater at the same DOC level; instead, it greatly exacerbated the increases in JNaout and JClout at low pH and prevented any protective influence of added Ca(2+). Thus, blackwater DOC appears to be very different from commercial humic acid. Biogeochemical modeling indicated that blackwater DOC prevents Ca(2+) binding, but not H(+) binding, to the gills and that the protective effects of blackwater cannot be attributed to its higher buffer capacity or its elevated Al or Fe levels. Natural DOC may act directly at the gills at low pH to exert a protective effect and, when doing so, may override any protective action of Ca(2+) that might otherwise occur.
