Providing access to the 1990 U.S. census maps.

"The U.S. Bureau of the Census has published on CD-ROM format data for the smallest geographic reporting levels.... Providing access to the maps that define the reporting areas used by the Bureau within a county is one aspect of service that is unique to census files STF1A, STF1B, and STF3A. The paper illustrates the way these reporting levels are defined in the Tract/BNA Maps and Block Maps. The steps taken by one library to develop a link between a geographic area of interest to a patron and the areas defined on these maps are described. These steps include preserving and housing the maps in a way that makes them easy to use and preparing an index to the information contained on the maps using dBASE registered trademark software and information taken from STF1A using Extract software."

[Ethnodemography: problems and priorities].

"The author [suggests] that Bulgarian ethnodemography should study the ethnic 'cross section' of demographic processes on three levels: first, in the European context; second, on the regional (Balkan) level, and third, on the national (including subnational) level." The focus is on mapping the ethnic groups of Bulgaria. (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Complementary and conventional medicine: a concept map.

BACKGROUND: Despite the substantive literature from survey research that has accumulated on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the United States and elsewhere, very little research has been done to assess conceptual domains that CAM and conventional providers would emphasize in CAM survey studies. The objective of this study is to describe and interpret the results of concept mapping with conventional and CAM practitioners from a variety of backgrounds on the topic of CAM. METHODS: Concept mapping, including free sorts, ratings, and multidimensional scaling was used to organize conceptual domains relevant to CAM into a visual "cluster map." The panel consisted of CAM providers, conventional providers, and university faculty, and was convened to help formulate conceptual domains to guide the development of a CAM survey for use with United States military veterans. RESULTS: Eight conceptual clusters were identified: 1) Self-assessment, Self-care, and Quality of Life; 2) Health Status, Health Behaviors; 3) Self-assessment of Health; 4) Practical/Economic/ Environmental Concerns; 5) Needs Assessment; 6) CAM vs. Conventional Medicine; 7) Knowledge of CAM; and 8) Experience with CAM. The clusters suggest panelists saw interactions between CAM and conventional medicine as a critical component of the current medical landscape. CONCLUSIONS: Concept mapping provided insight into how CAM and conventional providers view the domain of health care, and was shown to be a useful tool in the formulation of CAM-related conceptual domains.

Demographic characteristics of settlement and a demogeographic regionalization of the USSR.

"An approach to the delimitation of demogeographic regions in the USSR is proposed and a network of 27 regions is developed and mapped." Geographical differences in population reproduction, structure, and migration at various territorial levels are examined. Data are provided on changes in urban population between 1959 and 1979; total, urban, and rural population growth during that period; total and rural population density in 1979; and rates of natural increase as of 1960, 1965, 1970, and 1974.

Information frames: a new multimedia approach to Web-based learning of biology and medicine.

Presentation of content in hyperlinked multimedia formats for teaching has failed using the computer's power of navigation through rich visual and auditory information. We have developed "Information Frames", an authoring tool in hypertext markup language (html) format, that allows easy utilization by technology-challenged teachers and professors, and attracts students because of interactive, design-based learning. An Information Frame contains a definition, explanation and illustration of a single concept. Topics are provided with hyperlinks to other Information Frames having related concepts that may provide prerequisite knowledge, or may raise the concept to a more integrative level. A graphical view of the linked-Information Frames presents a Concept Map of the overall topic.

World population in a grid of spherical quadrilaterals.

"We report on a project that converted subnational population data to a raster of cells on the earth. We note that studies using satellites as collection devices yield results indexed by latitude and longitude. Thus it makes sense to assemble the terrestrial arrangement of people in a compatible manner. This alternative is explored here, using latitude/longitude quadrilaterals as bins for population information.... The results to date of putting world boundary coordinates together with estimates of the number of people are described. The estimated 1994 population of 219 countries, subdivided into 19,032 polygons, has been assigned to over six million five minute by five minute quadrilaterals covering the world."
