[Pathogenesis, morphology, prognosis, clinical course and therapy of cystosarcoma phyllodes mammae (author's transl)].

Our investigation of 20 cases of C. ph. of the breast in women aged between 12 and 70 years yielded the following results: 1. In all cases a fibroadenoma or remnants of such a tumor were seen alongside with C. ph. A C. ph. therefore always develops on the base of a benign fibroadenoma of the breast. 2. The mitotic proliferation of the epithelium induces a proliferation of the myoepithelial cells which form the stromal portion of the tumor and can differentiate in to fibroblasts, lipoblasts, smooth muscle cells, reticulum cells, cartilage cells, osteoid cells or bone cells. The C. ph. of the female breast should thus be seen as an adenomyothelioma. Malignant degeneration of stromal cells possibly with haematogenous metastasis is observed in some cases. Concurrent malignant change of the epithelium (carcinosarcoma) is extremely rare and leads to lymph node metastases. 3. At the time being, there is no standardized and/or schematic treatment available. The therapy should be performed according to the size and growth of the tumor into the surrounding tissue, from simple excision to mastectomy. Radiation therapy ist not effective.

[Lowering of the incidence of puerperal mastitis in the sow by protection of the mammae from contamination].

Twelve sows each farrowed in an experimental pen designed especially for this study or in a crate. Viable counts of enterobacteriaceae were performed in samples taken from the laying area and from the teats. Secretion from every mammary complex was examined repeatedly for bacteria and for somatic cells. The sows in the experimental pen did not lay down in their own faeces. The viable counts in samples from the laying area and the teats were much lower than with the sows kept in farrowing crates. Infection with E. coli was observed in 3 mammary complexes of the sows in the experimental pen as compared to 27 complexes of the sows in the crate. More than half of the infections was detected in the samples taken before farrowing began. In the average the bacteria persisted for 1.3 days. On the first 4 days of life piglets sucking teats with cytologically defined mastitis had an average daily gain of 105 g as compared to 125 g with piglets sucking healthy teats. In conclusion puerperal mastitis is a consequence of faecal contamination of the mammary gland. Soiling of the laying area with faeces and urine can be reduced by improvements in the farrowing accommodations.

[Tumor cells and extracellular matrix with special reference to mamma tumors in dogs and cats].

The essence of the cell-matrix interaction in tissues is that cells influence the composition of the extracellular matrix but that, on the other hand, components of the matrix are also involved in the regulation of growth and differentiation of the cells. Interaction is also found to occur in tumours though in a different way, so that infiltration and metastasis and the occurrence of scirrhous carcinomas are the result. Canine and feline mammary tumours are interesting objects for the study of this interaction since fibroadenomatous changes, in which connective tissue is the predominating tissue, is a common finding in cats only, whereas mixed and complex mammary tumours, producing matrix components of varying type, are common tumours in dogs.

[The membrane potential of the secretory cells of the mamma under the action of mezaton and izadrin].

The development of depolarization mesaton-induced and hyperpolarization isadrine-induced changes of the membrane potential of the mice mammary gland secretory cells was followed by a decrease in transepithelial electrical resistance and in potassium ions activity in the alveoli. The isadrine-induced hyperpolarization could be reversibly depressed by a substitution of chloride ions with sulphuric acid ions. Neither mesaton nor isadrine altered the MP after blocking of the Na+/K+ pump. Catecholamines seem to exert a direct alpha-adrenomimetic and an indirect beta-adrenomimetic reversible blocking effect upon the activity of the Na+/K+-ionic pump.

[Involution of rat mammae after abortion, cessation of lactation and vitamin A exposure].

Structural changes in the mammary gland cells have been studied in rats electron microscopically during pregnancy and involution process after cessation of lactation, as well as at initiation processes by means of abortion at various time of pregnancy (on the 8th, 13th, 20th days). The involutional processes are demonstrated to depend on differentiation degree of the mammary gland cells: intensity of autolytic processes is essentially higher at abortion performed at late stages and at cessation of lactation. Stages of physiological death of the cells are followed. Vitamin A effect on the processes of differentiation and involution is investigated.

[Degradation of 125I-prolactin in the mammae and kidneys of lactating rats].

The degradation of sheep and rat 125I-prolactin was studied. It was shown that in the breast tissues, there were specific prolactin degrading proteases. The maximal activity of breast proteases was noted at pH 7.6 and 3.0. Neutral proteases were located in the nucleic and mitochondrial fractions, acid proteases mostly in the lysosomal fraction. Some data indicating the participation of the receptors of the breast sensitive nerves in the regulation of prolactin degrading neutral protease activity were obtained. Apart from degradation products from the breast and kidneys, a high molecular complex was extracted. After treatment with mercaptoethanol it dissociated with the release of a 125I-prolactin monomer. It is assumed that high-molecular products extracted from the tissues are a soluble hormone-receptor complex.

Some observations on the morphology of the bovine teat canal (Ductus papillaris mammae).

After reviewing traditional and present day concepts of the mechanism by which the external orifice of the teat canal control the outflow of milk and the entry of bacteria etc. into the cavities of the mammary gland, this paper reports on the results of electron microscopic and other studies of the teat tip. This leads to the conclusion that the concept of a sphincter surrounding the teat canal should be substituted by one of a multi-spiralled, net-like integrated musculo-elastic system. This system may facilitate automatic closing and opening of the teat canal depending on the state of its major functional elements, namely (i) elastic fibres for passive closure under normal conditions (ii) smooth muscle fibres augmenting the former and (iii) the level of the intra-cisternal milk pressure. This closure is enhanced by soft teat canal keratin.
