This longitudinal study explores the association between family system characteristics measured during adolescence and later midlife well-being. Home interviews were held in the 1970s with 99 families with adolescents. Connection and individuation in the family system were coded from taped family interactions. Twenty-five years later, telephone interviews were conducted with 54 men and 120 women (representing 82 families) who were adolescents in the 1970s interviews. Family experiences during adolescence predicted adult well-being 25 years later. In a structural equation model, there was a direct effect of family both on the adolescents' later marriage and on well-being at midlife; for men, marriage also affected well-being. The results support the importance of connection and individuation in the adolescent family for adult well-being.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to find the relationship between the lived experience within the family and depression in the elderly. DESIGN: The study had a crossover and descriptive design. SETTING: Carranque and Campanillas Health Districts, Málaga. PATIENTS: The target population was the over 65's. The sample consisted of 97 people attended at 2 health centres, one rural and one urban. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The main study variable was the results on the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), which were contrasted through multiple linear regression with the variables of age, sex, marital status, tobacco dependency, number of people living together, presence of the children in the home (concretely, daughters), family income, ownership of the home, social support network, and Apgar Family II. The results showed that the GDS correlated only with the results of the Apgar Family II (p = 0.00003). CONCLUSIONS: When tackling the depression of elderly people in primary care, it is absolutely vital to look at the family context, as this is a factor strongly linked to the depression.
This paper describes the nature of the family involvement typically observed in anorexia nervosa and bulimia and the role of family therapy in a comprehensive treatment approach. Both the patterns of family interaction observed by clinicians and researchers and the varieties of family treatment used to address these disorders are described. The different types of relationships observed between the eating-disordered patient and the family are also described.

The comprehensive casuistry, which is based on the forensic examination by the author illustrates a family-drama, in which a 19-year-old girl killed her alcohol and tablet dependent mother in multiple ways and later, with the help of the three years younger sister plastered the body in a sarcophagus inside the apartment. The paper will delineate the life-circumstances, the family- and the psychodynamic of the criminal act. Beside a review of the literature concerning matricide by the daughter, the dynamic aspect of the matricide will be discussed on the basis of the greek tragedies Elektra (Sophokles) and Medea (Euripides). The victim is compared with the part of Medea, the fate of the daughter with the fate of Elektra.

The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which family cohesion, a functional characteristic of family life, is related to school achievement. It is already established in the international literature that such a relationship does exist between school achievement and a number of structural characteristics of the family, particularly socioeconomic status (SES). Demographic data were collected from all the ninth grade students of two Greek Cypriot high schools, one serving a suburban and the other serving a rural population. The students (N = 391) completed a self report questionnaire that was designed to measure the degree of their family cohesion or the emotional togetherness that they felt existing among the members of their family. It was found that the degree of family cohesion was as able to discriminate them in terms of school achievement as their family's SES. Both variables produced statistically significant differences, in contrast to gender and place of residence (urban vs rural). The results are discussed in relation to the Greek Cypriot family context.
