Conjunctival edema and alopecia of the external third of the eyebrows in a patient with Meige syndrome.

PURPOSE: To describe a patient with Meige syndrome in whom we observed the coexistence of hereditary lymphedema of the lower legs, conjunctival edema and alopecia of the lateral third of the eyebrows. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: Histological examination of the conjunctival and skin specimens showed dermal edema and a slight reduction in the number of severely ectatic lymphatics in the reticular dermis. The vessel were identified as lymphatics on the basis of immunohistochemical evidence of discontinuity and/or absence of basement membrane. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical and histological findings suggest that the etiopathogenesis of the edema in Meige syndrome is related to a structural ectatic defect of lymphatics. This anomaly seems to involve both skin and other sites, such as conjunctival mucosa.

Use of Burow's wedge principle for repair of wounds in or near the eyebrow.

Burow's wedge flap provides an excellent method for repair of wounds in or near the eyebrow. Advantages afforded by this technic in this context include ample flap elasticity and vascularization, versatility in dealing with wounds of varying dimension and location, and fewer incisions in comparison with the number necessary with other methods. Between 1980 and 1984 the author used this method in twelve patients and obtained good to excellent results in eleven and a fair outcome in one.

[Impacted canine tooth and the eyebrow: the orbit-eyelid impact of occlusal dysfunction].

The orbital region and the dental occlusion are biomechanicaly interdependant. The maxillary basal bone is located in the orbital region due to the presence of the maxillary sinus. Any trouble of the dental occlusion such as a retained canine can involve a lack of projection of the supra and the infra-orbital rim. This lack of projection of the infra-orbital rim is responsible of lower eyelid fat pad; the lack of projection of the supra-orbital rim is responsible of an eyebrow-forehead ptosis. Clinical variations can be observed according to the side of the preeminent eye.

Trans-eyebrow mini-orbitozygomatic pterional approach for minimally invasive skull base surgery.

Surgical treatment of skull base pathologies remains one of the most challenging tasks to neurosurgeons. Advances in neuroimaging as well as the evolution of modern techniques and neurosurgical equipment have paved the way for a more precise diagnosis, a better selection of the surgical approach and have prompted the adaptation of minimally invasive concepts to different aspects of modern neurosurgical practice. The trans-eyebrow mini orbitozygomatic pterional approach is a tailored approach that provides multiple avenues to the target, minimizing retraction of the brain and affords better exposure of the pathology. It was performed on 16 patients with frontobasal or suprasellar tumors. The post-operative clinical outcome was excellent with smooth and fast recovery as well as satisfactory cosmetic results. It should be considered as part of the armamentarium to manage skull base lesions when indicated and not to replace other well recognized skull base approaches.

Total scalp, ear, and eyebrow avulsion: aesthetic adjustment of the replanted tissue.

A case of successful replantation of a total scalp avulsion, including both ears and one eyebrow, is presented with bilateral anastomoses to the superficial temporal vessels. While over 90 percent of the replant survived, partial loss of occipital and posterior neck skin and the inferior half of the left ear occurred. The patient subsequently required additional procedures, including skin grafting, scar revisions, and staged ear reconstructions. Thus, while microsurgery often provides the only hope for tissue salvage, there is a frequent need for additional revisions and aesthetic adjustment of portions of the replanted tissue.

Hering's law and eyebrow position.

A patient with bilateral but asymmetrical brow ptosis is presented in whom the frontalis action on the relative position of the eyebrows could be demonstrated to obey Hering's law of equal innervation. The neurological basis for this finding is discussed, along with the implications for the surgical management of brow ptosis.

Reconstruction of the localized eyebrow defect.

A localized eyebrow defect can be reconstructed with the double-Z rhombic technique. A previously unreported characteristic of this technique is its ability to maintain relative vertical alignment of anatomic landmarks as the defect is collapsed horizontally.

Microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the eyebrow.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of the largest reported microcystic adnexal carcinoma of the eyebrow in an 89-year-old woman and to review the literature regarding the periorbital occurrence of this tumor. METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: This case was treated with primary excision and radiotherapy, with no clinical signs of recurrence in the past 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: Microcystic adnexal carcinoma is a rare tumor; however, because of its aggressive local infiltration, ophthalmologists should consider this diagnosis and complete surgical excision. Long-term data are needed to establish outcomes from the different treatment options.

Granulomatous tissue reaction following cosmetic eyebrow tattooing.

We report a case of epithelioid granuloma which occurred at the site of a previous cosmetic eyebrow tattooing. A biopsy specimen showed the organized appearance of epithelioid cell granulomas containing little pigment as well as occasional giant cells, mainly of Langhans' type, thus showing the characteristic features of granulomatous hypersensitivity. With the use of energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis and inductively coupled plasma spectrometry, the presence of copper, iron, cobalt, and chromium was demonstrated.

Pegylated interferon-induced eyelid and eyebrow trichomegaly during chronic hepatitis C.

One of the most common skin and hair growth disorders related to interferon therapy is alopecia. Hypertrichosis has also been reported as a rare side-effect of interferon therapy, especially in eyelashes. Herein is reported a case of eyelid and eyebrow trichomegaly in a patient treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C associated with porphyria cutanea tarda.

Eyebrow surgery: the supraciliary craniotomy: technical note.

OBJECTIVE: Many approaches have been recommended for the surgical treatment of anterior and middle cranial fossa lesions. The frontobasal approach and its many modifications have been proposed and developed for such situated lesions. An alternative approach is the frontolateral craniotomy through a supraciliary skin incision. METHODS: This minimally invasive technique, a 2.5 x 3.0 cm craniotomy, just above the eyebrow through a supraciliary incision, is a simple but elegant modification of the traditional approach to the anterior cranial fossa. RESULTS: A step-by-step description of the approach is offered in this report to facilitate a clear understanding of the lesions treatable with this minimally invasive technique. CONCLUSION: The supraciliary frontolateral keyhole craniotomy is a minimally invasive cosmetic approach that provides excellent exposure to a variety of intracranial lesions. This approach cannot be used for all intracranial pathologies, but is recommended for many anterior and middle cranial fossa lesions.

The brow slide: a technique for the aesthetic treatment of eyebrow tumors.

Skin neoplasms involving the eyebrow are not an uncommon problem. Standard surgical resections that depend on elliptical excision and closure tend to either remove an excessive amount of brow or place scars in an unfavorable position. We present a simple technique that allows for maximal brow preservation, alignment of remaining brow, and a minimal amount of exposed scars.

[Treatment of alopecia areata of the eyebrow with diphenylcyclopropenone and its possible risks].

The treatment of alopecia areata (AA) with diphencyprone is well established and acknowledged. Up to now, diphencyprone has only been applied in case of AA of the capillitium. Thus, for the first time, we used this substance in the treatment of AA of the eyebrows. In consideration of the possible risks, we discuss the necessary precautions regarding the patient, as well as possible side effects.
