Norgestomet implants synchronize estrus and enhance fertility in beef heifers subsequent to a timed artificial insemination.

Three trials involving 128 heifers were conducted to determine whether norgestomet implants administered during the mid- and late luteal phases after breeding could be used to synchronize a second estrus in nonpregnant, inseminated heifers without adversely affecting pregnancy in pregnant heifers. All heifers were initially synchronized with Syncro-Mate B and artificially inseminated 47 h after implant removal. On d 9 (Trial 1) or d 12 (Trial 2) after the timed AI, the heifers were randomly assigned to treated or control groups. Treated heifers received two silicone implants containing 10.0 mg of norgestomet each (Trial 1) or one silicone implant containing 3.6 mg of norgestomet (Trial 2). Silicone implants were removed on d 21 after the initial AI. In Trial 1, the calving rate to the initial AI of the control heifers was 35 vs 55% for the norgestomet-implanted heifers (P > .05). In Trial 2 the calving rate to the initial AI of the control heifers was 9 vs 45% in the treated heifers (P < .01). At the return estrus 52% of the control heifers returned to estrus within a 3-d period, whereas 93% of the norgestomet-treated heifers returned to estrus within a 3-d period (P < .01). Norgestomet treatment had no effect on serum progesterone concentrations of the pregnant heifers on d 21 after the initial AI. In Trial 3, both control and treated heifers were administered silicone implants containing 3.6 mg of norgestomet on d 12; additionally, the treated heifers received an injection containing 3.0 mg of norgestomet and 5.0 mg of estradiol valerate. Norgestomet implants were removed on d 21.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The influence of season on sow weaning to estrus interval and subsequent reproductive performance following estrus synchronization by batch weaning.

In 45 indigenous Nigerian sows, which had been synchronized in their estrous cycle by batch weaning, the interval was investigated from weaning to estrus in the rainy and dry seasons. It was found to be 3 1/2 days in each season. The heat was short, especially the standing estrus, which will have to be investigated further. There was no seasonal difference in the number of piglets weaned per sow. In the dry season, sows farrowing lost more weight from birth to weaning than in the rainy season. Sows farrowing into the rainy season delivered more piglets.

A note on the effect of continuous ram presence on estrus onset, estrus duration and ovulation time in estrus synchronized ewes.

During fall season, 18 multiparous Corriedale ewes were divided into two equal groups for the continuous (CON) and intermittent (INT) presence of a ram. Estrus was synchronized with fluorgestone acetate intravaginal sponges that were left 14 days, plus an injection of 200&mgr;g of a prostaglandin F-2alpha analog at sponge removal. Estrus was detected three times a day (at 6 a.m., 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.) by using rams with harnessess and markers. Ovulation time was determined by laparoscopy, starting 24h after estrus detection. Estrus onset was (mean+/-S.E.M.) 32.9+/-1.6 and 45.3+/-4.4h for the CON and INT groups, respectively (P<0.01). Estrus duration was 31.1+/-0.9 and 30.2+/-1.2h, for the same groups, respectively (P>0.05). Ovulation time and the interval from sponge removal to ovulation (ISRO) for the CON and INT groups was 29.0+/-1.5, 62.0+/-2.0, 26.7+/-1.3 and 72.0+/-4.2h, respectively. Ovulation time was not different (P>0.05), but ISRO was shown to be different between treatments (P<0.05). It is concluded that the continuous presence of a ram after sponge removal hastens estrus onset and reduces the interval between sponge removal and ovulation, without modifying estrus duration and time between estrus onset and ovulation.

Comparison of timed insemination with insemination at estrus following synchronization of estrus with a MGA-prostaglandin system in beef heifers.

Three trials utilizing 231 beef heifers were conducted in 1993 to determine if a timed insemination would result in similar synchronized pregnancy rates as insemination by estrus following synchronization of estrus using the 14-d MGA-prostaglandin system. All heifers were fed 0.5 mg MGA/h/d fof 14 d and given a 25 mg injection of PGF(2)alpha im 17 d after the final day of MGA feeding. Heifers in Group 1 (timed AI treatment) were inseminated at 72 h after the prostaglandin injection independent of whether or not they were observed in estrus. Heifers in Group 2 (AI by estrus) were inseminated 12 to 18 h after the onset of estrus. Since the trial was a significant source of variation for synchronized pregnancy rate, the effect of treatment on pregnancy rate was analyzed for each trial. Synchronized pregnancy rates in Trials 2 and 3 were similar in both treatment groups; 37 vs 35% and 61 vs 58% for the timed AI vs AI by estrus (Groups 1 and 2) in Trials 2 and 3, respectively. In both of these trials the degree of estrous synchrony was high. In Trial 1, the synchronized pregnancy rate in heifers that were time-inseminated was significantly lower than that of heifers that were inseminated by estrus (29 vs 57%). The lower synchronized pregnancy rate of Group 1 (timed AI) heifers in Trial 1 appeared to be due to the low degree of estrous synchrony in this trial. Our results indicate that using timed insemination with the 14-d MGA-prostaglandin system will give similar synchronized pregnancy rates as inseminating by estrus in groups of beef heifers where the degree of synchrony is high. However, in heifers where the degree of estrous synchrony is low, a timed insemination reduces synchronized pregnancy rates.

Synchronization of estrus with PGF2 alpha administered 18 days after a progesterone treatment in lactating dairy cows.

In a previous study we showed that estrus synchronization with 2 treatments of PGF2 alpha 13 d apart reduced conception rate at the synchronized estrus and that this reduction occurred mainly in cows in the early luteal phase at the second PGF2 alpha treatment. The objective of the present study was to determine the efficacy of a synchronization regimen in which PGF2 alpha was administered during the mid- to late-luteal phase to cows that had previously been synchronized with progesterone. Spring-calving cows from 6 dairy herds were used in this study. On Day -32 (Day 1 = the start of the breeding season), cows that had calved 2 or more weeks ago were randomly assigned to a synchronization (S, n = 732) or control (C, n = 731) group. Cows in Group S were treated with an intravaginal progesterone device (CIDR) for 12 d from Day -32 to Day -20, while those in Group C were left untreated. Similar percentages of cows in Group S (80.6%) and C (82.9%) had cycled by Day -7. The CIDR treatment synchronized the onset of estrus, resulting in 92.9% of cows in estrus being detected within 7 d after CIDR removal. Cows in Group S that had cycled by Day -7 were treated with PGF2 alpha (25 mg, i.m., Lutalyse) on Day -2. Cows in both groups that were anestrous on Day -7 were treated with a combination of progesterone and estradiol benzoate (EB) to induce estrus and ovulation (CIDR and a 10 mg EB capsule on Day -7, CIDR removal on Day -2, and injection of 1 mg EB 48 h after CIDR removal). The PGF2 alpha treatment synchronized the onset of estrus in 87.5% of the cows. Group S and C cows had similar conception rates to first (61.0 vs 58.3%) and second (58.4 vs 60.9%) AI; similar pregnancy rates over the AI period (82.8 vs 79.2%) and over the whole breeding season (91.9 vs 90.6%); and required a similar number of services per pregnancy to AI (1.7 vs 1.8). The interval from the start of the breeding season to conception for cows conceiving to AI or to combined AI and natural mating was shorter (P < 0.001) by 5.7 and 6.2 d, respectively, for the Group S cows. It is concluded that the treatment regimen tested in the present study achieved satisfactory estrus synchronization, had no detrimental effect on fertility at the synchronized estrus, and shortened the interval from start of the breeding season to conception.
