Cytologic detection of Enterobius vermicularis and Strongyloides stercoralis in routine cervicovaginal smears and urocytograms.

Four cases of Enterobius vermicularis infection and one case of Strongyloides stercoralis infection were found during the examination of 22,700 routine Papanicolaou-stained cervicovaginal smears and 434 urinary sediments. Ova of E. vermicularis were observed in the urocytograms from three girls and in the vaginal smear of a young woman. In a second woman, a S. stercoralis larva was detected in the routine vaginal smear. A clear background or a mild inflammatory pattern was noted in the smears in these cases.

Abdominal pain due to Enterobius vermicularis.

The authors describe an unusual case of an 11-year-old girl who had right lower quadrant pain due to unilateral salpingitis, suppurative omentitis and periappendicitis. The etiologic agent was the parasite Enterobius vermicularis. A review of the literature revealed that pinworm may be the cause not only of appendicitis, but of inflammatory reactions in other intra-abdominal sites and that the frequency of this occurrence is probably higher than has previously been suspected.

Enterobius vermicularis infection among children aged 1-8 years in a rural area in Malaysia.

The infection rate and relationship of enterobiasis with socio-economic status were determined in children aged 1-8 years, living in a rural area in Malaysia. Of the 178 subjects 40.4% were infected with Enterobius vermicularis. The distribution of enterobiasis among these children were analyzed in relation to age groups and sex. The rate of infection was significantly higher in older children (5-7 years). The association of enterobiasis with other factors studied such as number of persons per house, household income per months and mother's employment status were not significant. The sensitivity of three successive days anal swabs compared to a single swab was found to be statistically significant.

Perforation of the ileum secondary to Enterobius vermicularis report of a rare case.

An isolated ileal perforation is presented in a 12-yr-old patient. Microscopic examination revealed granulomatous inflammation due to Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm). This is only the third documented report of intestinal perforation involving pinworms. Although infestation with this parasite is generally considered to be relatively harmless, on rare occasions, it can be a significant cause of morbidity due to its potential ability to invade the tissues.

[Bilateral tubo-ovarian abscess caused by Enterobius vermicularis. Presentation of a case].

We present the case of a 33-year-old patient who had undergone hysterectomy due to an in situ carcinoma of the uterine cervix; exploratory laparotomy was carried out for a suspected abscessed pelvic tumor. It was confirmed that the two Fallopian tubes and ovaries were abscessed and exeresis was carried out. The anatomicopathological study of these showed granulomas containing gravid female specimens of the Enterobius vermicularis species.
