Information and communication technology needs for distributed communication and coordination during expedition-class spaceflight.

AO-lU. Expedition-class missions are distinct from historical human presence in space in ways that significantly affect information flow and information technology designs for such missions. The centrality of Mission Control in these missions is challenged by the distances, associated communication delays, and durations of expeditions, all of which require crews to have more local resources available to manage on-board situations. The author's current research investigates how ground controllers effectively allocate communications bandwidth, cognitive resources, and knowledge sharing skills during time critical routine and non-routine situations. The research focus is on team-based information and communication technology (ICT) use to provide recommendations for improvements to support adaptive bandwidth allocations and improved sharing of data and knowledge in Mission Control contexts. In order to further improve communication and coordination between controllers and crew, additional ICT support resources will be needed to provide shared context knowledge and dynamic assessment of costs and benefits for accessing local information vs. remote expertise. Crew members will have critical needs to understand the goals, intentions, and situational constraints associated with mission information resources in order to use them most effectively in conditions where ground-based expertise is insufficient or requires more time to access and coordinate than local task demands permit. Results of this research will serve to improve the design and implementation of ICT systems to improve human performance capabilities and system operating tolerances for exploration missions. Ambulatory physiological status monitoring during a mountaineering expedition.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate an ambulatory physiological monitoring system during a mountaineering expedition. We hypothesized that the Environmental Symptoms Questionnaire, combined with frequent measurement of oxygen saturation and core temperature, would accurately identify cases of environmental illness. METHODS: Twelve military mountaineers took a daily Environmental Symptoms Questionnaire, monitored fingertip oxygen saturations, and recorded core temperatures while climbing a 4,949-m peak. Illnesses identified by the system were compared with those identified by spontaneous reports. RESULTS: The system correctly identified one case of high-altitude pulmonary edema and two illnesses that were not reported to the physician (one case of acute mountain sickness and one of self-limited symptomatic desaturation). However, it did not identify two illnesses that were severe enough to preclude further climbing (one case of sinus headache and one of generalized fatigue). CONCLUSIONS: Our monitoring system may complement, but cannot replace, on-site medical personnel during mountaineering expeditions.

[Dependence of 'macroscopic fluctuations" on geographic coordinates (from materials of Arctic (2000) and Antarctic (2001) expeditions].

The detailed structure of histograms constructed from the results of synchronous measurements of the alpha-activity of 239Pu microsamples, conducted in Pushchino (Moscow Region, Russia) and on board the ship "Academician Fedorov" during the Arctic and Antarctic expeditions (2000 and 2001) was analyzed. It was shown that, if the histograms were constructed over a total period of 15 min and more, the "local zone effect" and the circadian periodicity in the similarity of histogram structure, observed during measurements in Pushchino, are not found in measurements on board the ship near the North Pole (latitude 82 degrees). If the histograms were constructed over a total time of 1 min, a strict periodicity ("stellar day" 23 h 56 min) in the appearance of similar histograms in Pushchino and the Arctic and a strict synchronicity of the appearance of similar histograms of measurements in Pushchino and on board the ship at the same local geographical time were observed. During the Antarctic expedition, the effect of synchronicity of the appearance of similar histograms in Pushchino and on board the ship decreased as the ship moved towards the South Pole and the difference in latitude between the points of measurements increased.

Nutrition and energy balance on the 'Footsteps of Scott' expedition 1984-86.

Nineteen-Eighty-Seven marks the 75th anniversary of the expedition to the South Pole led by Captain R.F. Scott, during which he and his party died. Between November 1985 and January 1986, three men manhauled sledges 875 miles, following Scott's original route to the South Pole. They consumed an energy dense diet which provided 20.5 MJ/man/day of which 57 per cent came from fat. Despite the diet being well tolerated and allowing for dehydration, the men lost between 6.7 and 10.5 kg, indicating a daily energy expenditure of 25 MJ/man/day. Estimates from daily diary records of periods spent in different classes of activity and the literature values for energy consumption assigned to those classes, suggest a daily energy expenditure of 29 MJ/man/day. These estimates of energy expenditure were higher than expected and suggest that on Scott's last expedition, emaciation, secondary to a diet grossly inadequate in energy content, might have been a more important factor in his demise than has previously been thought.

[The dynamics of the prevalence of the basic risk factors for IHD in men engaged in the expedition--duty-watch form of work at an oil-producing complex in western Siberia].

Monitoring of the main risk factors of ischemic heart disease was conducted in an ordered population of males aged 20-59. The examinees worked in expeditions engaged in oil production at the West Siberia oil fields. The prospective epidemiological survey lasted 3 years for the study population and 2 years for two representative comparison groups. The examination program involved filling WHO risk factor questionnaire, two measurements of arterial pressure, anthropometric examination, total blood cholesterol assay. Systolic pressure was found to increase upon service duration 2.9 and 4.3 years, diastolic pressure rose after 2.9 years of service, body mass index after 4.3 and 5.6 years. It is evident that preventive measures should be taken within 3 years of service in conditions of expedition work schedule.

Measurements of energy expenditure using isotope-labelled water (2H2(18)O) during an Arctic expedition.

Estimates of energy expenditure using both isotope-labelled (2H2(18)O) water and dietary intake/body composition changes were made during an attempt by two men (MS and RF) to walk to the North Pole. The isotope-labelled water technique gave mean estimates of daily energy expenditure for the 48-day expedition of 28.05 MJ (MS) and 32.38 MJ (RF), which compared with estimates of 25.66 MJ (MS) and 24.86 MJ (RF) from the intake/body composition measurements. Fluid retention and peripheral oedema probably caused a considerable underestimate of the losses in body energy stores when applying the energy balance method, whereas in the isotope method, uncertainty in the measurements of isotopic background led to minimum errors of -4.9% to +4.0% of the means for MS and -12.7% to +8.2% for RF (95% confidence limits).

Fitness changes in an Australian Antarctic expedition.

Serial fitness testing using a cycle ergometer and a submaximal work-load technique was performed monthly on 22 expeditioners at Davis Station, Antarctica, during the period February 1982 to January 1983. The results showed a linear increase in fitness in the group over the 12 month study period, including the winter period when outdoor activities were limited. The regression equation for fitness (measured as maximum oxygen uptake) was VO2max (ml . min-1 . kg-1) = 43.96 + 0.631 (time) where time is the month number from 1 through to 12. The correlation coefficient of the regression line representing fitness plotted against time in months was 0.918 (p less than 0.001). It is evident that indoor station activities and limited outdoor activities were more than adequate to maintain physical fitness in the winter period. Pre-departure fitness assessment for expeditioners is suggested. As fitness was lowest on arrival in Antarctica yet station workloads heaviest at this time, physical training prior to arrival in Antarctica is recommended for future expeditions.

[Concept for a bioclimatic evaluation of an expedition and trekking area at moderate and high altitudes].

This paper presents a concept which is built up on climate data with a long period of observation (temperature, wind conditions, precipitation, irradiation, and the frequency of low pressure weather situations with unfavorable biotropy stages). It therefore allows an evaluation of the bioclimate of a high mountain area. With the help of this relatively simple method, the risk of problems like AMS can be better estimated. Latest comparisons between different agencies of expeditions show that often the time schedule for climbing to the summit is too short and allows too little time for acclimatization; furthermore the number of days allowed for recreation is too small. A comparison of selected alpine regions shows better conditions in, for example, the Mount Kenia/Kilimandjaro region and parts of the western Andes in Chile, whereas the Himalaya and the Karakorum group can be problematic.

Oxygen saturation course and altitude symptomatology during an expedition to broad peak (8047 m).

Thirteen healthy European mountaineers (11 male, 2 female) participated in the 62-day German-Pakistani Research Expedition to Broad Peak (8047 m) in the Karakorum, Pakistan. During ascent, base camp stay and approach to the summit, oxygen saturation was measured by pulse oximetry at rest, during exercise and during sleep; in addition, questionnaires on high altitude symptomatic had to be answered. We found a dramatic decrease in oxygen saturation especially at extreme altitudes (7100 m: Median 63%, Min 59%, Max 65%) and a long time required for real acclimatization. The lowest figures at 4850 m were found during maximal exercise, 77.5% (69 - 85%) and during sleep, 81% (73 - 88%), the highest ones at rest, 86.5% (77 - 89%). There was a significant correlation (Spearman rank correlation coefficient with ties) between measured oxygen saturation during the ascent to/stay at base camp and high altitude illness (p = 0.005 - 0.05), as well as with high altitude performance (p = 0.025 - 0.01). The limiting values of "no high altitude symptomatic", "high altitude discomfort", AMS and the malignant forms could be estimated for acclimatized (>90%/>80%/>70%/<70%) and unacclimatized (>80%/>70%/>65%/<65%) condition. Pulse oximetry is an objective non-invasive method of measurement that is easy to handle. It is a suitable device besides clinical examination and questionnaire-test in the diagnosis of high altitude illness even in the hands of non-professionals. The measurement at sleep can possibly explain present high altitude symptomatic despite of (nearly) normal oxygen saturation values at rest.

Range-wide Yangtze freshwater dolphin expedition: The last chance to see Baiji?

BACKGROUND, AIM AND SCOPE: There are two species of fresh water cetaceans surviving in the Yangtze River system in China: Baiji (Lipotes vexillifer) and Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis). As a result of the expansion of human activities on the river, their distribution ranges appear to be decreasing and in the case of the Baiji, are even being restricted to several sections. The Baiji is the world's most critically endangered cetacean species with a population estimated at only a few tens of individuals. The Yangtze finless porpoise is the world's only freshwater-adapted population of the species, and it has been estimated that only around 1,000 individuals remain in the river system. In order to prevent the extinction of Baiji and a sharp decline in the abundance of the porpoise, in situ conservation (i.e. in the river) and two ex situ conservation (i.e. in semi-natural reserves and in captivity) strategies were proposed and have been implemented since the early 1990s. In view of both the severely endangered status of the animals and the severely degraded conditions of their habitats, the feasibility and actual status of these two strategies are raised for discussion. MAIN FEATURES: The threats faced by the cetaceans are mainly from the unfettered exploitation of the river's resources. In the past 20 years, five nature reserves have been established along the river. Imposing maximum prohibition of harmful and illegal fishing methods in the reserves might prolong the process of extinction of these cetaceans in the wild, but so far, the administrative measures taken in the reserves have not yet kept the abundance from sharply declining. As human use of the river and its resources is expected to intensify for many decades into the future, the ability of the river to continue to support these species is certainly undecided. Therefore, rescuing animals from the river and establishing viable breeding populations in seminatural reserves, in which the environment is similar to the main stream of the river, and in captivity, has to be considered urgently as the short-term goal of ex situ strategies. Since the abundance of porpoises is higher than that of the Baiji, we have first established breeding populations of them in the semi-natural reserves and in captivity. But, considering the extremely low density of Baiji in the river, an immediate range-wide Yangtze Baiji survey is an urgent need for locating and capturing sufficient Baiji for successfully establishing a breeding population of them in semi-natural reserves. RESULTS: Two semi-natural reserves (in Shishou, Hubei Province, and Tongling, Anhui Province) have been set up along the river in order to establish breeding populations of the Baiji and the porpoises. So far, several small groups of porpoises that were caught in the main stream of the river have successively been introduced into the semi-natural reserves. Under careful management, these animals in both of the semi-natural reserves not only survive, but can also reproduce naturally and successfully. At least one or three calves were born in each reserve each year. Additionally, a breeding group of porpoises is being established at the Baiji Dolphinarium at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan. There are presently four adults and one calf living in the Dolphinarium. The calf, born in July, 2005, is the first captive bred Yangtze Finless Porpoise in the world. In preparation for the range-wide Yangtze cetacean survey, a 9-day pilot expedition on the river near Wuhan was conducted in March, 2006, in order to develop methods for locating the Baiji. No Baiji were expected to be seen in such a short period but about 40 porpoise sightings were observed. Results of the pilot survey indicated that traditional visual and acoustical survey methods for cetaceans should be adapted to find the elusive Baiji in the river. Currently, the range-wide Yangtze cetacean survey is in preparation. The survey will cover over 1,700 km of the Yangtze River from Yichang to Shanghai, and is expected to provide detailed information on Baiji and porpoise numbers and distribution patterns in the river. DISCUSSION: Although the short-term goal of ex situ conservation is to rescue cetaceans from the river and to establish viable breeding populations in semi-natural reserves and in captivity, the long-term goal of releasing the animals back into the river when the threats have decreased and the natural environment has been improved, should not be neglected. Moreover, the in situ conservation efforts in the natural reserves, and even in the entire Yangtze River system, including the lakes, should not be ignored or abandoned at any time. The activities contributing to the conservation of the Baiji and the porpoise in the wild have the incidental effect of benefiting the entire Yangtze ecosystem and other rare threatened species. The dynamics of the groups of porpoises in semi-natural reserves should be monitored continually, in order to guide the establishment of breeding groups of Baiji in these semi-natural reserves in the near future. CONCLUSIONS: Under the existing severely degraded conditions of the Yangtze system, the sharply fall populations of Baiji and porpoises will not be suspended in the foreseeable future. Therefore, ex situ conservation should be emphasized, and the severely threatened Baiji in the river should be removed and translocated to semi-natural reserves for establishing viable breeding populations. The successful program of capturing, translocating and maintaining finless porpoises in the Shishou semi-natural reserve has demonstrated its adequacy as an ex situ environment for cetaceans. Following the successful pilot survey in the river, the immediate range-wide Yangtze cetacean survey is proposed and is in preparation. The range-wide survey is expected to ensure that any remaining Baiji can be found reliably and captured successfully after the survey. RECOMMENDATIONS AND PERSPECTIVES: During the range-wide survey, not only the Baiji but also the porpoise as well as their habitats should be investigated based on visual and acoustical methods that adapted to the river and the animals. Meanwhile, the current risk levels to the Baiji and porpoises should be evaluated at each area where Baiji or porpoises can be reliably sighted. Any capture efforts should be targeted on the most threatened areas, or where there is maximum risk of injury or death. The immediate track of the Baiji should be carried out once a Baiji is sighted during the range-wide survey in order to obtain the movement route of the animals, which is crucial information for the successful capture operation. Additionally, the need to establish new semi-natural reserves for the porpoises should be placed on the agenda of local and central governments in the near future.

Megadosage of ascorbic acid in an Antarctic expedition.

1. No difference in health was observed between men on megadosage of ascorbic acid and controls during the year of an Antarctic expedition. 2. All men appeared to have a satisfactory intake of ascorbic acid throughout the year. 3. There was a statistically significant decrease in excretion of ascorbic acid by men on megadosage over the year, and by the controls. 4. The decline in excretion by the control group may be explained by dietary change, but the decline in those on megadosage may be due to altered handling of ascorbic acid by the body. 5. No complications due to megadosage of ascorbic acid were observed.

A psychometric study of stress and coping during the International Biomedical Expedition to the Antarctic (IBEA).

A psychometric study was made of stress and coping during the course of the International Biomedical Expedition to Antarctica (IBEA). The stressors were specified by observation, as were the group's behavioral reactions to them, but they produced no significant differences on scales of symptomatology. The repressor/sensitization defensive style of coping was then examined, and although there were grounds for associating repressor tendencies with the low self-reporting of stress, the group sizes were too small to confirm the suggestion statistically. But the question needs now to be taken further, as also does that of laboratory stressors.

The stability of psychometric performance during the International Biomedical Expedition to the Antarctic (IBEA).

A selection of tests designed to measure certain cognitive and psychomotor functions was administered to 11 subjects on an Antarctic expedition, some of whom had been preacclimatized with cold baths. No evidence was found of deterioration due to the Antarctic climate, or to the lack of preacclimatization. It was concluded that the motivation of the subjects was the crucial factor in maintaining their performance.

Changes in cerebral glucose metabolism after an expedition to high altitudes.

The possibility of persistent cerebral impairment due to exposure to extreme altitude and resulting hypoxic conditions is of great concern to both high altitude mountaineers and researchers. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of prolonged exposure to hypoxia on cerebral glucose metabolism, which probably precedes structural and functional impairment. Positron emission tomography (PET) employing [18F]-2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) was performed, and the normobaric hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) was assessed in 11 mountaineers before (pre) and after (post) climbing Mount Shisha Pangma (8048 m). During the climb, acute mountain sickness (AMS) symptoms were recorded and heart rate and oxygen saturation (SaO2) were measured daily. Neuropsychological evaluations were conducted at different heights. The difference FDGpost- FDGpre was analyzed voxel by voxel using statistical parametric mapping (SPM) and volumes of interest (VOI). SPM revealed two areas of increased cerebral FDG uptake after the expedition, one localized in the left cerebellum (+9.4%) and one in the white matter lateral of the left thalamus (+8.3%). The VOI analysis revealed increased postexpeditional metabolism in an area of the right cerebellum (+11%) and of the thalamus bilaterally (+3.7% on the left, +4.6% on the right). FDG-PET alterations did not correlate with changes in SaO2, HVR, or AMS scores. All neuropsychological test results during the climb were unremarkable. We conclude that a prolonged stay at an extreme altitude leads to regional specific changes in the cerebral glucose metabolism without any signs of neuropsychological impairment during the climb.

Wood-destroying soft rot fungi in the historic expedition huts of Antarctica.

Three expedition huts in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica, built between 1901 and 1911 by Robert F. Scott and Ernest Shackleton, sheltered and stored the supplies for up to 48 men for 3 years during their explorations and scientific investigation in the South Pole region. The huts, built with wood taken to Antarctica by the early explorers, have deteriorated over the past decades. Although Antarctica has one of the coldest and driest environments on earth, microbes have colonized the wood and limited decay has occurred. Some wood in contact with the ground contained distinct microscopic cavities within secondary cell walls caused by soft rot fungi. Cadophora spp. could be cultured from decayed wood and other woods sampled from the huts and artifacts and were commonly associated with the soft rot attack. By using internal transcribed spacer sequences of ribosomal DNA and morphological characteristics, several species of Cadophora were identified, including C. malorum, C. luteo-olivacea, and C. fastigiata. Several previously undescribed Cadophora spp. also were found. At the Cape Evans and Cape Royds huts, Cadophora spp. commonly were isolated from wood in contact with the ground but were not always associated with soft rot decay. Pure cultures of Cadophora used in laboratory decay studies caused dark staining of all woods tested and extensive soft rot in Betula and Populus wood. The presence of Cadophora species, but only limited decay, suggests there is no immediate threat to the structural integrity of the huts. These fungi, however, are widely found in wood from the historic huts and have the capacity to cause extensive soft rot if conditions that are more conducive to decay become common.
