A syndrome of trichoepitheliomas, milia, and cylindromas.

Three consecutive generations of a family have had members affected with trichoepitheliomas and milia. One member, the proband, also had cylindromas. The pattern of inheritance was a dominant one, with only the male members affected. Histopathologically, the trichoepitheliomas and milia contained keratinizing cysts with laminated centers, peripheral basaloid cells, and a thin granular layer. Fibroblastic stroma and fronding of basaloid cells were also seen in both tumors. The trichoepitheliomas and milia differed mainly in the greater proportion of keratinized cells found in the milia. Clinically, the milia were found only in areas of vellus hairs.

Carcinoma, Adenoid Cystic↗

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (cylindroma) of the trachea masquerading as asthma.

A 40-year-old woman was admitted with upper airway obstruction; chest roentgenogram with tomograms, laryngoscopy, and bronchoscopy verified the presence of a subglottic tumor. Spirometry disclosed a maximum inspiratory flow rate more reduced than in the maximum expiratory flow rate, suggestive of upper airway obstruction. The pathologic conditions were consistent with cystic adenoid carcinoma (cylindroma) of the trachea. The patient underwent tracheostomy and total laryngectomy with an uneventful recovery. No evidence of local extension or distant metastases were evident at time of surgery.

[Cobalt therapy for tracheal cylindroma].

The Cylindroma may form from the glandular tissue of the respiratory mucous membrane, being exceptional the tracheal sitting. The AA. inform about a case of this rare localisation. They review the treatments proposed by several AA. In the present instance the cobaltherapy worked fairly good, because the circumstances of the patient forbad any surgery.

Carcinoma, Adenoid Cystic↗

Dermal cylindroma (turban tumor). Case report.

We present an unusual case of massive dermal cylindroma (turban tumor), occupying the entire scalpand forehead. It was treated by a total scalping procedure and skin grafting in two stages. Additional tumors of the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back were excised and closed. The nose was treated by shoving and dermabrasion, similar to a rhinophyma. The lip was treated by dermabrasion. There has been no evidence of recurrence in the scalp which was treated by excision and grafting. There is now a papular quality of the skin over the nose and on the uppler lip, indicating that regrowth may occur. The etiology, pathology, and a review of the literature are presented.

[The clinical entity of primary tracheal cylindroma (author's transl)].

On the grounds of 5 own observations of primary tracheal cylindroma and under consideration of the cases mentioned in literature on this subject, the repeatingly occurring and, therefore, probably typical characteristics of this kind of tumour were described. In the course of the disease, three phases may quite easily be differentiated, and the special features of the main symptoms (dyspnoea, cough, expectoration, hoarseness) as well as apparently specific, however inconstant changes in the blood picture were set forth.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the vulva. Malignant cylindroma.

A case of adenoid cystic carcinoma (cylindroma) of the vulva is presented, reviewing the clinical course and response to therapy over a 5-year period. Only 9 previous cases had been reported by 1963. Several sources of cell origin had been previously suggested. Findings and histology in this case support a relation to a similar tumor occurring in other sites of the upper respiratory tract and salivary gland.

[Cryotherapy of the cylindroma syndrome].

Two patients with dermal Cylindromas were successfully treated with a special cryoapplicator. This small cryosurgical unit consists of a copper core of 645 g with a 1,5 cm insulating styropore body. At the one end, the cylindrical core has a projection bearing the therapeutic surface, at the other a thread, which takes up a manipulator. This serves the purpose of transfering the core into liquid gas and, after throughout cooling, into the styropore body. After half an hour of therapeutic use, the warmed core requires new cooling in liquid nitrogen or liquid air.

[Spiradenoma, cutaneous cylindroma and familial multiple trichoepithelioma].

Multiple spiradenoma, trichoepithelioma and traits of cylindroma in three members of a family are studied. The relationships among these tumors are discussed. Spiroadenoma and cynlindroma have shown a close interrelation. Both conditions may exist with multiple lesions in genetic autosomal dominant inherited association with multiple trichoepitelioma.

Adenoma↗

Pericardial reconstruction of the membranous trachea after resection of adenoid cystic carcinoma (cylindroma).

An intraluminal adenoid cystic carcinoma (cylindroma) in the patient reported herein involved just the membranous portion of the distal region of the trachea and extended caudally to include the carina and the membranous portions of both main-stem bronchi--a total linear involvement of 6 cm. The tumor occluded 90% of the airway in its greatest extension. Conservative resection of this extensive tumor was successfully performed by membranous tracheal reconstruction with a pedicled autogenous pericardial patch graft.

Bronchial Neoplasms↗

[Atypical cylindroma of the ethmoid].

The authors relate an ethmoidal cylindroma, whose extension includes the orbital apex, without any ocular symptomatology. They wonder about the possibility of an early diagnosis of such tumors.

Basement membrane components and keratin in the dominantly inherited form of cylindroma.

Specific antibodies against basement membrane associated, connective tissue components: type IV and V collagens, laminin, fibronectin and heparan sulphate proteoglycan were used to study the basement membrane-like structures in cylindroma lesions. All these components were immunohistochemically demonstrated as a band surrounding islands of epithelial cells and all except fibronectin also inside the islands. Antibodies to keratin filaments stained most of the cells inside the epithelial islands confirming the epithelial origin of the cells.

MRI in the pre-operative assessment of tracheal cylindroma. Case report.

Compared with malignant neoplasms of the chest, benign tumours are quite rare; cylindroma (or salivary gland adenoma) is exceptional. The apparent histological benignancy belies its high potential for invasiveness. This can, in some cases, lead to extensive, non-conservative surgery. By a different approach in the imaging of the chest, Magnetic Resonance Imaging in this condition may provide an accurate pre-operative assessment. We present a case in which MRI provided the information necessary for the surgical approach, and describe its accuracy and the results obtained.

Membranous basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland. Malignant transformation in a patient with multiple dermal cylindromas.

The rare association of dermal cylindroma (turban tumor), trichoepithelioma, eccrine spiradenoma, and membranous basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland has been previously reported. It is believed that this combination represents a peculiar inherited tumor diathesis involving neoplasms of presumed ductal origin, eccrine in the skin and intercalated in the parotid gland. We describe a patient in whom the basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland underwent malignant transformation.

Cylindroma of the scalp.

A patient is presented with a large dermal cylindroma of the whole scalp. The origin of the tumor from sweat glands has been well accepted, but it is still not clear whether the tumor arises from the eccrine or the apocrine glands. Differential diagnosis and surgical treatment are discussed together with the typical clinical and pathological features of this tumor.

[Development and neoplastic progression of benign and malignant cutaneous cylindroma].

Cylindromas of the skin are subjected to a constant biological evolution in their growth and differentiation, leading in rare instances to metaplasia or even in true malignancy. By using optical microscopy and autohistoradiography after incorporation of tritiated thymidine and proline, several stages of neoplastic progression can be recognized such as growth, primary involution, inflammatory regression and malignant transformation. The stage of growth is characterized by low proliferative indices in clear cells of the lobules while dark cells are almost not dividing. Primary involution consists of massive accumulation of basement membrane components accompanied by lysis of cells. Inflammatory regression results from the infiltration of the neoplasm by lymphocytes with disappearance of the basement membrane. Malignant transformation appears to be multifocal.

[A case of cylindroma of the cervix (author's transl)].

The authors, in this article, report on a case of the relatively rare condition of cylindroma of the cervix (adenoid cystic carcinoma). The typical features as seen under the optical and electron microscope are broadly as well as the different techniques available to treat this rare lesion, which is more fulminating in its evolution than the similar condition when it occurs in the skin or the breast.
