[Serum levels of healthy adult humans and changes of IgG subclass levels between infected and convalescent phase in respiratory infections].

We measured serum levels of IgG subclasses in 100 healthy adult humans and 64 patients with respiratory infections by utilizing the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The patients were composed of 18 patients with acute bacterial pneumonia and bacterial infection of 9 patients with pulmonary emphysema, 27 patients with chronic bronchitis and 10 patients with bronchiectasis. In healthy adults, serum levels of IgG1 subclass decreased in proportion of age increase. Serum levels of IgG2 rose after 30 years of age. Serum levels of IgG3 and IgG4 showed no remarkable changes by age. In patients with respiratory infectious disease, serum levels of IgG1, IgG2 and IgG4 decreased significantly but IgG3 increased significantly. We also measured serum levels of IgG subclasses in 10 patients with acute bacterial pneumonia and bacterial infection of 5 patients with pulmonary emphysema, 12 patients with chronic bronchitis and 4 patients with bronchiectasis at both infected and convalescent phases. The serum levels of IgG2 in patients with pneumonia and pulmonary emphysema at convalescent phase were significantly lower than those in the patients of infected phase. Other subclasses showed no significant change. We summarized that IgG2 was consumed at the infected phase by protecting against bacterial infections. IgG2 probably has an important role of protecting against bacterial respiratory infections among all IgG subclasses.

Differences in acute and convalescent-phase antibodies of cats infected with feline picornaviruses.

Complement fixation inhibiting and complement-fixing antibodies were demonstrated in sera from cats during the acute and convalescent stages, respectively, of feline picornavirus infections. Complement-fixing antibody activity was present in 19S and 7S globulins, whereas complement fixation inhibiting antibody activity was confined to the 7S globulins. Sera with complement-fixing antibody and sera with complement fixation inhibiting antibody were also shown to have neutralizing and precipitating antibodies. In a study of antibody responses to homotypic and heterotypic strains of feline picornavirus, less serological cross-reactions were observed between strains of feline picornavirus in sera from cats in the acute phase of feline picornavirus infection than in the convalescent phase. The temporal relationship of complement fixation inhibiting and complement-fixing antibody responses of cats after acute viral respiratory infections is contrasted with previously observed antibody response in cats to feline leukemia virus.

Persistence of local cytokine production in shigellosis in acute and convalescent stages.

Shigella infection is accompanied by an intestinal activation of epithelial cells, T cells, and macrophages within the inflamed colonic mucosa. A prospective study was carried out to elucidate the cytokine pattern in Shigella infection linked to development of immunity and eradication of bacteria from the local site and also to correlate the cytokine profile with histological severity. An indirect immunohistochemical technique was used to determine the production and localization of various cytokines at the single-cell level in cryopreserved rectal biopsies from 24 patients with either Shigella dysenteriae type 1 (n = 18) or Shigella flexneri (n = 6) infection. The histopathological profile included presence of chronic inflammatory cells with or without neutrophils and microulcers in the lamina propria, crypt distortion, branching, and less frequently crypt abscesses. Patients had significantly higher (P < 0.005) numbers of cytokine producing cells for all of the cytokines studied, interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha), IL-1 beta, IL-1ra, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), IL-6, IL-8, IL-4, IL-10, gamma interferon, TNF-beta, and transforming growth factor beta 1-3, in the biopsies than the healthy controls (n = 13). The cytokine production profile during the study period was dominated by IL-1 beta, transforming growth factor beta 1-3, IL-4, and IL-10. Significantly increased frequencies of cytokine-producing cells (P < 0.05) were observed for IL-1, IL-6, gamma interferon, and TNF-alpha in biopsies with severe inflammation in comparison with those with mild inflammation. During the acute stage of the disease, 20 of 24 patients exhibited acute inflammation in the rectal biopsies and the cellular infiltration was still extensive 30 days after the onset of diarrhea, although the disease was clinically resolved. In accordance with the histological findings, cytokine production was also upregulated during the convalescent phase; there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the incidence of cytokine-producing cells between acute (2 to 8 days after the onset of diarrhea) and convalescent (30 days after onset) stages.

Maturation and trafficking markers on rotavirus-specific B cells during acute infection and convalescence in children.

We have previously studied B cells, from people and mice, that express rotavirus-specific surface immunoglobulin (RV-sIg) by flow cytometry with recombinant virus-like particles that contain green fluorescent protein. In the present study we characterized circulating B cells with RV-sIg in children with acute and convalescent infection. During acute infection, circulating RV-sIgD(-) B cells are predominantly large, CD38(high), CD27(high), CD138(+/-), CCR6(-), alpha4beta7(+), CCR9(+), CCR10(+), cutaneous lymphocyte antigen-negative (CLA(-)), L-selectin(int/-), and sIgM(+), sIgG(-), sIgA(+/-) lymphocytes. This phenotype likely corresponds to gut-targeted plasma cells and plasmablasts. During convalescence the phenotype switches to small and large lymphocytes, CD38(int/-), CD27(int/-), CCR6(+), alpha4beta7(+/-), CCR9(+/-) and CCR10(-), most likely representing RV-specific memory B cells with both gut and systemic trafficking profiles. Of note, during acute RV infection both total and RV-specific murine IgM and IgA antibody-secreting cells migrate efficiently to CCL28 (the CCR10 ligand) and to a lesser extent to CCL25 (the CCR9 ligand). Our results show that CCR10 and CCR9 can be expressed on IgM as well as IgA antibody-secreting cells in response to acute intestinal infection, likely helping target these cells to the gut. However, these intestinal infection-induced plasmablasts lack the CLA homing receptor for skin, consistent with mechanisms of differential CCR10 participation in skin T versus intestinal plasma cell homing. Interestingly, RV memory cells generally lack CCR9 and CCR10 and instead express CCR6, which may enable recruitment to diverse epithelial sites of inflammation.

Delayed regeneration of foveal cone photopigments in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease at the convalescent stage.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the physiological characteristics of the macula in patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease during the convalescent stage with specific reference to the kinetics of foveal cone photopigment regeneration. METHODS: Six eyes of three patients at the convalescent stage of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease were studied. All the eyes had best corrected visual acuity of 1.0 or better and had had no recurrence of inflammation for at least 12 months after the last episode. Foveal cone densitometry (FCD), focal macular electroretinograms, color vision tests, two-color perimetry, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were performed. RESULTS: No regeneration of cone photopigments was detected within the 7-minute testing time by FCD in all eyes at the first examination after the last episode. However, the other functional tests were normal, and the OCT-determined macular morphology was also normal. The regeneration kinetics of the foveal cone photopigment improved in three of six eyes at 36, 37, and 19 months after the last episode, whereas the other three remained delayed at 18, 18, and 49 months. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that a disorder of the foveal cone photopigment regeneration, and its recovery, requires a significantly longer time than that of other macular functions in some patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease.

Properties of adenyl cyclase from human jejunal mucosa during naturally acquired cholera and convalescence.

The enterotoxin of Vibrio cholerae causes copious fluid production throughout the lenght of the small intestine. As this is thought to be mediated by stimulation of adenyl cyclase, a study has been made of the activity and properties of this enzyme in jejunal biopsy tissue taken from patients during the diarrheal phase of cholera and after recovery. Adenyl cyclase activity during cholera was increased more than twofold relative to the enzyme in convalescence. Under both conditions stimulation by prostaglandin E(1) (PGE(1)) and by fluoride was observed. The responsiveness to PGE(1) was not altered in cholera; the total activity of the fluoride-stimulated enzyme was similar, a finding that suggests cholera toxin stimulates pre-existing enzyme in the intestinal cell. The enzymes during cholera and convalescence were similar in all other properties examined. Optimal Mg(++) concentration was 10 mM; Mn(++) at 5 mM stimulated the enzyme but could not replace Mg(++) except in the presence of 10 mM fluoride. Calcium was markedly inhibitory at concentrations greater than 10(-4) M. The pH optimum was 7.5 and the Michaelis constant (K(m)) for ATP concentration approximated 10(-4) M. Thus the interaction of cholera toxin with human intestinal adenyl cyclase does not alter the basic properties of the enzyme. When biopsy specimens were maintained intact in oxygenated Ringer's solution at 0 degrees C, no loss of activity was observed at 1(1/2) and 3 hr. In contrast, when the cells were homogenized, rapid loss of activity, with a half-life of 90 min was seen even at 0 degrees C. Consequently for comparative assays of human jejunal adenyl cyclase, strict control of the experimental conditions is required. It was under such conditions that a twofold increase in basal adenyl cyclase activity during cholera was observed.

Postpsychotic state, convalescent environment, and therapeutic relationship in schizophrenic outcome.

The authors evaluated the following variables in the 2-3-year outcomes of 30 schizophrenic patients: the acute/chronic dichotomy, the presence of a postpsychotic regressive state, the quality of the convalescent environment, and the formation of a therapeutic relationship. They found that the presence of a postpsychotic regressive state was not associated with either good or poor short-term outcome; that the diagnosis of acute schizophrenia was almost invariably followed by good outcome, but a diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia had little predictive value; and that a favorable convalescent environment and the presence of a therapeutic relationship were signigicantly associated with good outcome.

Convalescence after colonic resection with fast-track versus conventional care.

BACKGROUND: Multi-modal rehabilitation programmes may improve early postoperative body composition, pulmonary function, exercise capacity, and reduce hospital stay. So far, no data are available on convalescence after discharge. AIM: The objectives were to compare convalescence data (fatigue, sleep, time to resume normal activities, and functional capabilities) and need for nursing care and contact to general practitioner with fast-track multi-modal rehabilitation compared with conventional care after colonic surgery. METHODS: Non-randomised, prospective controlled study in 30 consecutive patients undergoing fast-track rehabilitation with continuous epidural analgesia, enforced oral nutrition, mobilisation, planned early discharge, and 30 consecutive patients undergoing conventional care. Patients were interviewed preoperatively and 14 and 30 days postoperatively. RESULTS: Median hospital stay was 2 vs. 8 days in the fast-track vs. conventional care group, respectively (p < 0.01). Fourteen days postoperatively, total and mid-day sleep were increased in the conventional care group when compared with the fast-track group (p < 0.01). Fatigue was increased significantly at 14 days (p < 0.05) and throughout the study period compared with the fast-track group (p < 0.01). Similarly, ability to walking stairs, cooking, house keeping, shopping and walking outdoor was significantly less reduced at 14 days in the fast-track group, who also regained leisure activities earlier (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between groups at 30 days or between need for nursing care and visits to general practitioners. Readmission for surgery-related events occurred more frequently (5 vs. 1 patient) in the fast-track group. CONCLUSION: Fast-track rehabilitation with early discharge after colonic surgery results in earlier resumption of normal activities with reduced fatigue and need for sleep postoperatively compared to conventional care, and without increased need for nursing care or visits to general practitioners. However, readmissions may occur more frequently.

Convalescent stage coronary flow reserve and late myocardial morphologic outcomes in patients with first anterior acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular damage immediately after reperfusion therapy is an independent predictor of left ventricular function in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, its recovery may vary among individuals and the relationship between convalescent stage microvasculature and late myocardial morphologic change is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients treated with coronary angioplasty within 12 h of their first anterior AMI were enrolled in this study. Coronary flow reserve (CFR) was measured 3 weeks post AMI, in both branches of the left coronary artery: culprit (left anterior descending artery: LAD) and non-culprit (left circumflex artery: LCX). Left ventriculography was performed at 3 weeks and 6 months post AMI and compared. Seventeen patients showed abnormal CFR in the LAD (Group 1: CFR<2), whereas 20 patients showed normal CFR (Group 2: CFR >/=2). Percent changes of end-diastolic volume tended to be higher in Group 1 than in Group 2 (11.8+/-21.6% vs -1.3+/-14.4%, p=0.056), and %changes of end-systolic volume was significantly smaller in Group 2 (11.8+/-22.1% vs -8.7+/-25.1%, p<0.05). A statistically significant correlation was found between absolute and relative CFR in the LAD and %change of end-systolic volume (r=-0.58: p<0.001, and r=0.40: p<0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Microvascular function in the convalescent stage may be related to these favorable changes.

Serum cytokine levels in infectious mononucleosis at diagnosis and convalescence.

Infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is common worldwide. A significant number of infected individuals develop infectious mononucleosis (IM). IM is manifested in most patients as a benign disease with mild symptoms. However, serious complications may develop in a subset of patients. Because EBV-infected B lymphocytes produce various cytokines that may provide the cells with a proliferative advantage, cytokine concentrations in serum samples taken from IM patients were measured in order to identify the cytokines responsible for the clinical manifestations of the disease. The concentrations of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and lymphotoxin (LT) were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in serum obtained from 14 IM patients during the acute phase of the disease and during convalescence, 5 patients with identical clinical manifestations who did not have IM (sick controls), and 11 healthy volunteers. It was found that the serum levels of TNF-alpha and IL-6 were significantly high in patients with acute IM compared with the serum levels in healthy individuals (P = 0.008 and P < 0.001, respectively) but returned to normal at convalescence (P = 0.009 and P = 0.005 respectively). However, whereas TNF-alpha concentrations were significantly higher (P = 0.04) in patients with acute IM than in the sick controls, no significant difference in IL-6 concentrations was found between the two groups of patients. Changes in IL-10 concentration were not statistically significant, and IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-8, and LT were detected only sporadically. The data in this study suggest that TNF-alpha may have a specific role in causing the clinical manifestations of IM. Further studies should determine the clinical significance of TNF-alpha inhibition in IM.

[Comparison of activities of daily living for a convalescent rehabilitation ward and general ward for stroke patients].

We investigated changes in the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) of stroke patients in a convalescent rehabilitation ward and a general ward using a Functional Independent Measure (FIM). The subjects were 109 patients hospitalized for rehabilitation purposes at the Oyamada Memorial Spa Hospital. The change in FIM at the time of hospitalization and that at 1 week later was investigated in 81 patients in the convalescent rehabilitation group (CRG) and 28 patients in the control group (CG). In addition, the CRG was investigated again after one month. Intensive rehabilitation service based on ADL and worksheets was introduced in the CRG. On the other hand, these were not introduced in the CG. The total score of FIM increased significantly (p<0.01) in the first week after hospitalization in both groups. The FIM-gain after one week in the CRG was high. With regard to each item, a significant improvement was observed in patients' motor skills while eating, grooming, bathing, dressing the upper body, dressing the lower body, toilet, bladder management, transfer bed/chair, toilet and tub, and walking/wheelchair (11/13). Multiple regressions were used to assess the relationships between FIM-gain (one week, one month), age, rehabilitation intensity and other predictive variables. Better rehabilitation outcomes were observed in patients with lower level of dementia and high rehabilitation intensity. It was thought that planned rehabilitation based on ADL was effective in the CRG, and it was suggested that the CRG's system is effective in the rehabilitation of stroke patients.

[Vestibular symptoms and ENG findings during periods of convalescence after endolymphatic sac drainage and steroid-instillation surgery (EDSS)].

Understanding the appearance of vestibular symptoms during periods of convalescence after surgery for the treatment of Meniere's disease is important for determining when a patient can return to work as well as the long-term results of the operation. We have treated 20 cases of intractable Meniere's disease with endolymphatic sac drainage & steroid-instillation surgery (EDSS) [Kitahara T, et al., Ann Otol Rhlnol Laryngol in press, 2000] and observed the subjective symptoms and objective vestibular findings using electronystagmogram (ENG) during the subsequent period of convalescence. The average postoperative durations of subjective static and evoked vestibular symptoms were 1.7 and 6.7 days, respectively. Those of spontaneous, positional and positioning nystagmus observed using ENG were 1.2, 2.0 and 7.9 days, respectively. In cases with a long history of Meniere's disease, postoperative static vestibular sensation and positional nystagmus lasted significantly longer than in cases with short histories. In cases with poorly developed temporal bony pneumatization in the area behind the posterior semicircular canal, postoperative evoked vestibular sensations and positioning nystagmus lasted significantly longer than in cases with well developed temporal bony pneumatization. Vestibular symptoms resulting from direct invasion during EDSS were considered to be slighter than those resulting from vestibular neurectomy or gentamicin treatment and almost the same as those resulting from endolymphatic sac surgery.

[Clinical significance of pressure measurement in the infarct-related coronary artery in acute myocardial infarction: evaluation of variables predicting recovery of left ventricular function in the convalescent stage].

Early reperfusion and good antegrade flow are essential in restoring better regional left ventricular function in acute myocardial infarction, but they do not always correlate with the extent of recovery. This study evaluated coronary circulation using the new "pressure wire" technique to measure the direct pressure of the coronary circulation including antegrade and collateral flow before and after reperfusion in patients with acute myocardial infarction, and to clarify the influence of these variables on recovery of left ventricular function in the convalescent stage. Fifty six consecutive patients with first acute myocardial infarction underwent percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty(PTCA) for totally occluded or severely narrowed infarct-related lesion and evaluation of coronary circulation using pressure wire. Left ventriculography was analyzed at 1 month after the onset in 41 patients. Treatment variables including reperfusion time, reperfusion modality, Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction(TIMI) grade after PTCA, and pressure wire variables were compared with parameters of left ventricular function. Reperfusion time was not related to regional wall motion evaluated by the SD chord of left ventriculography in the infarcted zone. Pressure wire measurements showed a correlation between fractional flow reserve measured after PTCA and infarcted regional wall motion(r = 0.558, p < 0.01). Patients with infarct-related lesion in the right coronary artery showed the magnitude of left ventricular regional wall motion was related to fractional collateral flow reserve(maxQc/Qn) during PTCA(r = 0.768, p < 0.05), but no such relationship was observed in patients with infarct-related lesion in the left anterior descending artery. Fractional flow reserve measured after PTCA varied widely in patients with the same TIMI flow grade, so did not vary with it. The pressure wire technique enables assessment of the collateral circulation distal to infarct-related lesion quantitatively before reperfusion in patients with acute myocardial infarction. The fractional flow reserve derived by coronary pressure after reperfusion was significantly related to the recovery of regional wall motion in the infarcted area in the convalescent stage. The fractional flow reserve after reperfusion with PTCA is a better parameter than TIMI flow grade for predicting recovery of regional left ventricular function after myocardial infarction.

[The rehabilitation of patients with acute pneumonia in the convalescence phase by using balneotherapy procedures].

Effects of balneotherapy (underwater douche-massage, Gauffe baths, contrast douche) on clinical course of acute pneumonia (AP), external respiration function, cardiohemodynamics, surface activity of pulmonary surfactant, lipid peroxidation were studied in 88 AP convalescents. It was found that underwater douche-massage is indicated in prevailing hemodynamic disorders and moderate obstruction of the large bronchi. The efficacy of the douche was 93.8%. Gauffe baths were preferable (clinical response 88.9%) in marked bronchial obstruction with affection of all the bronchi but in satisfactory cardiovascular function. Contrast douche was not effective in AP convalescents (response--56.9%).

[Gasless versus conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A randomized trial with regard to technical problems, postoperative course and convalescence].

INTRODUCTION: The positive CO2 pneumoperitoneum needed to create the working space for laparoscopic surgery may induce pathophysiological changes. Concern about these changes has led to the introduction of a gasless technique. The aim of the present study was to compare the gasless CLC and GLC with regard to exposure, technical problems, operation time, postoperative pain, clinical course, and convalescence. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty consecutive patients with symptomatic gallstones were randomised to conventional (CLC) or gasless laparoscopic cholecystectomy (GLC), with special reference to overall patient satisfaction, technical difficulties, duration of surgery, postoperative pain, and recovery. RESULTS: The overall exposure of the operative field was poorer in the GLC group, whereas the duration of surgery, steps involved in the cholecystectomy technique, length of hospital stay, and postoperative pain score did not differ significantly. The period to return to normal activity was significantly shorter in the GLC group, six days compared to 8.5 days in the CLC group (p < 0.05). No differences were found in terms of fatigue, dizziness and nausea, and overall satisfaction with the outcome. DISCUSSION: This study shows that convalescence is significantly shorter after laparoscopic cholecystectomy by the gasless technique than by the conventional CO2 technique. However, exposure of the operative field was less than optimal with the gasless technique.

[Specific antibodies in convalescents after West Nile fever].

Blood serum samples were obtained from patients with West Nile fever (WNF) from the city of Volgograd and its region within the disease weeks 1-3 (July-October 1999), month 6-7 (May_June 2000) and month 12-18 (May-June 2001) after the disease onset. In the sera of 40 patients examined 6-7 months after the disease onset IgM-antibodies to WNF virus were absent (dilution 1:50), IgG ones were detected in 35 patients (87.5%). 18 months after the disease IgG-antibodies were identified in 23 of 26 convalescents (88.5%). The serum samples obtained in autumn 1999 and May-June 2000 contained antihemagglutinins to WNF virus for 6-7 months in all 18 patients. In May-June 2000 the sera were positive in 38 convalescents who had WNF in 1999.

[Study on T cell subsets and their activated molecules from the convalescent SARS patients during two follow-up surveys].

AIM: To explore the changes of peripheral blood T cell subsets and their activated molecules in convalescent SARS patients. METHODS: In two follow-up surveys of the SARS patients discharged from our hospital, the changes of CD3(+), CD4(+), CD8(+), CD8(+) CD28(+), CD8(+) CD28(-), CD3(+) CD25(+), CD3(+) CD69(+), CD3(+) HLA-DR(+)T cells and the ratio of CD4(+)/CD8(+) T cells in peripheral blood of SARS patients treated unitedly with Chinese and Western medicines were detected by flow cytometry. RESULTS: In two follow-up surveys, the percentages of CD3(+), CD4(+), CD8(+) CD28(+) T cells and the ratio of CD4(+)/CD8(+) T cells were remarkably lower than those of normal values(P<0.05), while the percentage of CD8(+) CD28 (-) T cells was higher(P<0.01). As for the percentages of CD3(+), CD8(+), CD4(+)/CD8(+), CD3(+) CD25(+), CD3(+) CD69(+) and CD3(+) HLA-DR(+) T cells, there was marked difference between 1st and 2nd follow-up results, but for other molecules there was no notable difference. CONCLUSION: The convalescent SARS patients' immune function gradually recovers, and the effect of SARS virus on activation of T cells gradually disappears.

[Factors of avascular necrosis of femoral head and osteoporosis in SARS patients' convalescence].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the factors affecting the pathogenesis of avascular necrosis of femoral head and osteoporosis of SARS patients during convalescent stage. METHODS: The clinical data of 40 SARS patients, 12 males and 28 females, aged 29 +/- 9, hospitalized from April to June 2003, were reviewed, targeted on the use of glucocorticoids. Three months after the discharge ELISA and indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) assay were used to detect the serum IgG. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to detect the damage of the head of femur and quantitative ultrasound (QUS) was used to detect osteoporosis at the left heel. RESULTS: The average total dosage of methylprednisolone was (4949 +/- 2959) mg, and the average course of treatment was (24 +/- 5) days (16 to 30 days). Twenty-three patients underwent ictus therapy of corticosteroids for (8 +/- 4) days. The extenuation time of corticosteroid' dosage was (33 +/- 26) mg/d. Of the 40 patients, 36 were IgG positive with an average A value of (0.91 +/- 0.24) and 4 patients were IgG negative. Twelve patients (30%) were with type I avascular necrosis of femoral head, including 3 cases with unilateral left--necrosis and 9 cases of bilateral necrosis. The other 28 patients were without necrosis. Two patients were suffering from osteoporosis and 30 patients were with bone density decrement. The average Z values of the parameter BUA and VOS were (-1.26 +/- 0. 53) and (-0.53 +/- 0.30) respectively. The corresponding T values of the parameter BUA and VOS were (-1.49 +/- 0.59) and (-0.65 +/- 0.05) respectively. The influencing factors of femoral necrosis included the degree of healing activity, the dosage summation of corticosteroids, and length of ictus therapy. The influencing factors of bone density included age, dosage summation, and length of ictus therapy. The influencing factors of the bone fabric and flexibility included the use and length of ictus therapy. Statistics showed that serum IgG was not related with avascular necrosis of femoral head and osteoporosis. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence rates of avascular necrosis of femoral head and of osteoporosis were higher in convalescent SARS patients than in general population. SARS virus may not affect the pathogenesis of avascular necrosis of femoral head and osteoporosis.
