A prototype system was developed for use as a teaching tool, allowing students to link EMG monitoring, data smoothing, robotic control, and neural network training within a rapid prototyping virtual environment (VE). The VE software allowed for the rapid development of scenarios and, when linked with EMG data input to a neural network, allowed the user to control an artificial world containing a virtual arm. Student teams then attempted to control the arm in the VE while performing the tasks by use of a neural network system they had specifically developed and trained using their own EMG signals. The results from their system were then translated into a form that enabled the control of a real robot. Students enjoyed the challenge and uniqueness of the module, and were enthusiastic about extending the concept to other areas of interest.

Research suggests that high-quality formative assessment has a strongly positive effect upon student learning. Unfortunately, formative assessment does not appear to be frequently used in didactic dental curricula. Our hypothesis was that providing students with practice online exam questions would enable those who voluntarily took the exam to perform better on subsequent summative exams than did students who did not utilize this opportunity. A test bank of exam questions was written for dental students enrolled in two different biomedical science courses. Half the questions were arbitrarily assigned to an electronic test site; the other half were used as a written summative classroom exam taken later. Students who took the online formative exam in the first semester course scored 8.8 percent higher on the summative exam than did those who did not take the practice exam. This represents almost a full letter grade higher for the formative exam-takers. Students who took the formative online exam in the second semester course scored 5.2 percent higher on the summative exam than did the non-takers. Both of these differences were statistically significant. Under these experimental circumstances, providing formative online exams appeared to promote student performance as reflected by higher scores on the summative exams.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the EGG of laryngeal diseases and to evaluate the significance of Electroglottgrapihc waveform in the diagnosis of laryngeal diseases. METHOD: The computer multimedia program of Dr. Speech science for Windows was used to obtain the EGG parameters in 120 cases of vocal polyp, 42 cases of vocal nodule, 21 cases of vocal cord paralysis, 42 cases of laryngeal cancer and 38 cases of Reinke's edema. The ECG parameters were analyzed. RESULT: The special abnormal changes in the waves of EGG were related to the formation (type, position and size ) of laryngeal disease. CONCLUSION: The changes of Electroglottgraphic waveform perform a quantitative and objective index to the diagnosis of the laryngeal disease.
The idea that efficacy efficiency, and quality in medicine could not be reached without sorting the huge knowledge of medical and nursing science is very common. Engineers and computer scientists have developed medical software with great prospects for success, but currently these software applications are not so useful in clinical practice. The medical doctor and the trained nurse live the 'information age' in many daily activities, but the main benefits are not so widespread in working activities. Artificial intelligence and, particularly, export systems charm health staff because of their potential. The first part of this paper summarizes the characteristics of 'weak artificial intelligence' and of expert systems important in clinical practice. The second part discusses medical doctors' requirements and the current nephrologic knowledge bases available for artificial intelligence development.
