[The spatial distribution of mitochondrial respiration and oxidative phosphorylation along the small intestine in rats of different ages].

Growing rats were shown to have the maximum of respiratory and ATP-synthetase activities in the duodenum and proximal part of the small intestine, the minimum--in its distal part, whereas the medial part of the intestinal tube was in intermediate position. These parameters were equally distributed along the small intestine in adult rats. In old rats, the highest rate of oxygen consumption was revealed in the mitochondria of the medial part, the lower one--in the proximal part, and the lowest level was found in the duodenum and in distal part of the small intestine.

[Long-term morbidity and spatial distribution of tick-borne encephalitis and ixodes tick-borne borreliosis in Udmurtia].

The paper considers the trends of morbidity due to tick-borne encephalities (TBE) and lxodes tick-borne borrelioses (lTBB) in Udmurtia during 35 years (1965-2000) and evaluates the long-term influence of measures aimed at suppressing natural foci by eliminating the basic vector on this process. For this, data on 1062 cases of fevers occurring after the bite of a tick in Udmurtia in 1965-1968, the similar data on 1509 cases in 1983-1987, and the official data on the incidence of these infections in 1996-2000 have been retrospectively analyzed. It has been shown that in Udmurtia the natural foci of lTBB coexisted with those of TBE long before the pathogens of borrelioses were described and notification of the infection of this group was initiated. In the 1990s, there was a drastic rise in the incidence of TBE and lTBB as compared with the 1960s and 1980s, which was due to an increase in the rate of contacts of the population with natural foci and to the better diagnosis of these infections. The prevalence of lTBB coincides with that of TBE. There is a long (more than 30 years) epidemiological effect in eliminating the vector Ixodes persulcatus.

[Temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the crop root in intercropping system].

The ecological mechanism of competition and compensation between the crop root systems of two different intercropping patterns, wheat-soybean and corn-cabbage, was studied by field experiment. The results showed that the annual growth peak of wheat-soybean roots in intercropping was interlacing, the growth of root weight and length expressed synchronism, and the peak of root weight was appeared earlier than that of root length. The vertical distribution of the two crops' root system in two intercroppings was reduced gradually along with soil depths, which also showed that the multiple growth waves moved progressively. The root system distributed horizontally in intercropping system also showed a clearly unbalanced distribution. The root system distribution of out-row for corn elongated 20.4-40.8 cm to cabbage rows, but that of cabbage elongated only 8.5-12.6 cm to corn. The cross extent of root systems in corn-cabbage intercropping was decreased from 40.2 cm to 20.1 cm by fertilization, and the place of cross point for root concentrated region was changed from 20.5 cm to 12.4 cm below soil surface by fertilizer supply. The place of cross point for root concentrated region was an important index to decide the degrees of competition.

[Soil organic carbon pool and its spatial distribution pattern in the Circum Bohai Region].

The research and management of soil carbon pool and the effect of land-use on it are the key project of study on global change. In this paper, the data of 1,374 soil profiles in the Circum Bohai Region were used to estimate the soil organic carbon (SOC) pool of this region. The results showed that in this region, the total soil organic carbon pool in 1 m depth was 2.1 Pg C, and the biggest SOC pool was brown soil, occupying 55.6% of the total SOC. The second one was moisture soil, accounted for 26.9%. The SOC pools of aeolian sandy soil and dark brown soil were very small, only about 0.1% of the total. However, the soil organic carbon density (OCD) of boggy soil was the biggest (22.90 kg C.m-2), the second was dark brown soil (16.04 kg C.m2), and the lowest were aeolian sandy soil (2.88 kg C.m-2) and solonchak (6.0 kg C.m-2), implying that desertification and salinalization could reduce soil organic carbon. Moreover, the results also suggested that the topsoil held 673.30 Tg C. It meant that there was about one-third of the total SOC could be easy to be disturbed. According to the OCD at its level distribution gradient, it could be divided into four regions, i.e., coastal region, plain region, northwestern region, and hilly region. The order of OCD from high to low was hilly region, northwestern region, plain region, and coastal region. This regulation reflected not only the role of climate and landform, but also the effect of human activity intensification on SOC. Therefore, it was very important to protect and manage the land in this region well for the SOC maintenance and the sustainable land use.
