During the twenty years in which nursing has been taught as a university subject field, its teaching methods have undergone two stages: a first one about ten years long in which the change produced in the orientation toward nursing care originated a conceptual and methodological whirlwind advancing the profession in a way which had never before occurred; and a second stage in which the conceptual waters tend to subdue and the first doubts begin to appear about whether or not the profession is walking down the right path. This article proposes to serve as a reflection on the twenty year history of Nursing as a university subject field as well as to reflect on how we can construct the future on this base, not only in nursing studies themselves and the manner of teaching these studies, but in the profession as a whole. The author presented this as a conference at the Spanish Association of Nursing Teachers' XVIII "Working Days" Conference.
A nurse is considered competent in a specific role if he or she demonstrates the necessary skills, knowledge and appropriate attitude to a set level. Level-specific competencies are based on the belief that nurses of different grades will achieve different levels of competency against a set standard. One unit developed a competency-based nursing programme for newly qualified D-grade staff.
In this paper, the authors examine select major pedagogical and methodological issues concerning health care management executive training and academic program development in the former Soviet sphere of influence during the 1990s. Experience from programs offered during the 1990s has direct implications for the continued development of health care management programs and faculty in the United States. In essence, each of the nations that were involved represented an experimental setting for the introduction and improvement of management skills in the health care sector and the development of professional health care managers. Evaluative findings should help to inform future efforts to construct and deliver effective international and domestic management educational programs.

This article describes an innovative educational approach that was introduced and developed in one occupational therapy program, favorably assessed by students, and promoted within the occupational therapy literature. A review of educational literature from other disciplines suggests that the approach characterized as creating a practice climate, may be useful to most allied health educators. We discuss (1) the meaning of the term practice climate, (2) the rationale for creating such a climate in larger classroom sessions, (3) nine process strategies that can establish this climate, and (4) an assessment of the approach by two groups of undergraduate students. Although introduced in a senior-level undergraduate course, the approach has merit for implementation in less advanced courses and in graduate education.
Students must deal with vast amounts of information in multiple formats, yet their ability to organize and link data in a logical way varies widely. Concept mapping offers nurse educators a useful tool to assist nursing students in wading through and critically analyzing this information more effectively. This article explains concept/cognitive mapping as a teaching strategy for several aspects of course work. Types and examples of maps developed by undergraduate and graduate students are used as illustrations and points of discussion. Illustrations are assessed according to type of map, information presented, aspects of the maps that facilitate meaningful learning, and what information is missing. Strategies for remediation to help learners assimilate new information are included. Finally, implementation of mapping in nursing education and ideas for research in concept/cognitive mapping are discussed.
Didactic means are an integral part of teaching also in the process of healthcare and doctoral education. They are applied not only in teaching of theoretical, but also in that of clinical subjects at medical faculties. The forms and levels of the use of didactic aids are subject to a dynamic process of transformation. They take place in form of conceptions, projects, realizations, results and effects. A part of them represent a domain of professionals, others are affected by basically non-professional teachers. The results and effects are influenced by students. The authors of this study present the didactic means used at the Faculty Medicine of Comenius University (FMCU) in Bratislava. (Tab. 1, Ref. 11.).

This article presents and analyses a training system aiming at acquiring skills in nursing cares. The aims followed are the development: --of an active pedagogic method: learning through problems (LTP); --of the interdisciplinary and intercultural approach, the same problems being solves by students from different disciplines and cultures; --of the use of the new technologies of information and communication (NTIC) so as to enable a maximal "distance" cooperation between the various partners of the project. The analysis of the system shows that the pedagogic aims followed by LTP are reached. The pluridisciplinary and pluricultural approach, to be optimal, requires great coordination between the partners, balance between the groups of students from different countries and disciplines, training and support from the tutors in the use of the distance teaching platform.
