[Gastro-esophageal reflux, personality study by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)].

Gastro-esophageal reflux (GER) is often associated with other functional digestive manifestations. The subjectivity of these manifestations permits an in-depth study of the personality of these patients as compared to a regional reference population with the use of the Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory. In these patients suspected to have a gastro-esophageal reflux, the means to the scales are modified except for that of the psychopathy scale, which is reassuring considering its severity. However, no personality profile may be exteriorized. The difference between patients with GER certified or not by pH measurement rests on the predominance of neurotic scales in the group presenting a gastro-esophageal reflux certified by pH measurement. This results appears to be due to the disease itself rather than to the conditions of performance of the MMPI during pH measurement. Only a pre- and post-therapeutic study will enable to confirm these data.

[Experiences and investigations with a Polish abbreviated form of the MMPI (DKO 74)].

Starting from a description of the advantages and weaknesses of the Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory (MMPI) test, the authors discuss the development, standardization, and normalization of an abbreviated form (DKO/74) which is used in Poland. Results of investigations made to determine the suitability of the method for establishing diagnoses, which included comparative examinations of various groups of Polish and G.D.R. patients (schizophrenics, neurotics, alcoholics, oncological subjects, and criminal offenders) as well as studies into factorial validity, are presented and show the test to be a suitable instrument for clinical and psychodiagnostic examinations.

Use of the MMPI to identify subtypes of delinquent adolescents.

Assessed the utility of the MMPI to identify and distinguish among subtypes of delinquent adolescents (N = 50). Behavior ratings were used as the criterion of classification into three delinquent subtypes--conduct problem, anxious-withdrawn, and a group with neither of those features. Only the Hs scale differed significantly between the first two groups. Results were disappointing in that they failed to support a previous study that had found differences, but that had used less rigorous classification criteria.

Note on the reliability of three MMPI short forms.

The Mini-Mult, FAM, and MMPI-168 were evaluated for correspondence with the full form MMPIs of 252 adult psychiatric inpatients. Although the correlations of each short form's estimated full-scale score with the corresponding actual full-form scale were high, only the FAM was able to reasonably predict the full-form single high-point code. The range of difference scores between short forms and the corresponding full-form scales was very wide and there was a low agreement rate with the full-form. These results contradict those of Newmark, Ziff, Finch, and Kendall (1978) and raise doubts about the utility of these three short forms.

Effects of scoring norms on adolescent psychiatric drug users' and nonusers' MMPI profiles.

The present study compared the effects of scoring norms on adolescent psychiatric inpatient drug users' and nonusers' MMPI profiles. The results indicated that regardless of drug usage or nonusage the application of adolescent norms yielded less pathological profiles than did the use of adult norms. A further finding was that Scale O, Social Introversion, is the only clinical scale from differentiated users' from nonusers' profiles.

[Use of the MMPI in neuropsychological analysis of personality disorders].

By means of a modified variants of the MMPI 20 patients were studied (10 with prevalent left and 10 with right frontal lobe lesions). The results, similar in the framework of groups with homogenous localizations, indicate principle differences attained in the personality profiles. In left-side frontal lobe lesions the main are the 8th, 1st, and 2nd scale, with an expressed 0-scale. In right-side lesions the main are the 7th and 9th scale. The results obtained correlate with the data of other personality techniques.

MMPI basic scales vs. two-point codes in the discrimination of psychopathological groups.

Made comparisons between MMPI basic scales and two-point codes in the discrimination of brain-damaged, schizophrenic, neurotic, and alcoholic patients (N = 380). Although levels of group differentiation were relatively low for both scales and codes, the latter approach was seen to result in a considerable loss of information and a concomitant reduction in criterion-related validity.

[Inheritability of personality traits measured by MMPI in families of schizophrenic patients].

The results of genetic and mathematical analysis of MMPI-measured personality traits performed on material obtained 37 families of schizophrenia-afflicted probands were outlined. The results obtained suggest that heritability of traits in schizophrenic families is higher than in the general population. The discriminant function significantly differentiating between schizophrenics' and healthy people's relatives and having high heritability was calculated.

Validation of the Watson-Thomas rules for MMPI diagnosis.

The Watson-Thomas rules for MMPI diagnosis of organic versus functional disorder were applied to the profiles of five groups of 14 male veteran patients, one neurologic and four psychiatric. The psychiatric groups were married schizophrenics, unmarried schizophrenics, alcoholics, and mixed functional diagnosis. Rule 4 was found to discriminate among the groups most reliably. In the psychiatric samples, married schizophrenics were not successfully categorized by any of the Rules.

[Effects of a rehabilitation program for alcoholic inpatients based on the MMPI].

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was administered to 53 male inpatients of alcohol dependence syndrome (ICD-10) at the time of their admission to the Alcoholism Rehabilitation Program (ARP) of Shiga Mental Health Center Hospital and again at the time of their discharge. The pretreatment profile had high peaks above 60 on the scale F, Hs, D, Hy, Pd, Pa, Pt, Sc and MAS. The 20 scales in the 27 examined scales changed significantly after the 84 days' treatment in the direction of reduced symptoms (Table 3). The changes in scores between pre and post treatment objectively showed that the ARP was effective as the treatment of alcoholism. It might be the base of all the recovery that the subjects regained their intelligence through the sobriety. Their changes in scores failed to predict their prognoses.

Interscorer reliability of the MMPI-2: should TRIN and VRIN be computer scored?

Some clinicians and researchers hand score their MMPI-2 protocols. Graham (1990) noted that TRIN and VRIN involve complex scoring that is best done by a computer. We examined the interscorer reliabilities of TRIN and VRIN and compared these results to the reliabilities of the other validity and clinical scales. Despite the high reliabilities (.97 to 1.00), clerical errors were common (i.e., 7% of the scales were scored inconsistently). Graham's caution about the inherent difficulty of scoring VRIN, but not TRIN, was supported. There were three times as many scoring disagreements for VRIN than any other scale (i.e., 27% of the protocols were in disagreement).

Personality differences among black, white, and Hispanic-American male heroin addicts on MMPI content scales.

Used MMPI Content Scale scores (Wiggins, 1966) to assess personality differences among black, white, and Hispanic-American heroin addicts. Ss were 423 male veterans who volunteered for the first time for treatment between 1972 and 1979 to an inpatient Drug Dependence Treatment Program (DDTP) of a Veterans Administration Medical Center. Two hypotheses were tested: First, that minority group heroin addicts (blacks and Hispanics) will show better adjustment than majority group (white) heroin addicts; second, that Hispanic-American heroin addicts will evidence personality characteristics unlike those of either whites or blacks. Both hypotheses were confirmed. Results were interpreted as supporting cultural theories of substance abuse and providing implications for diagnosis and treatment of substance abuse disorders among minority ethnic groups.

Validity of the MMPI-2 basic and Harris-Lingoes subscales in a forensic sample.

The present study explored the MMPI-2 correlates of criminal history in a sample of prison inmates. Although Ma was the only basic scale to demonstrate a significant positive association to crime history, three Harris-Lingoes subscales also bore significant associations to this criterion. The Ma1 (amorality), Pd2 (authority problems), and Pd5 (self-alienation) subscales demonstrated positive associations with crime history. Hierarchical multiple-regression analyses were used to examine the incremental validity of the D, Pd, and Ma Harris-Lingoes subscales when added to their parent scales in the prediction of crime history. Only the Pd Harris-Lingoes subscales demonstrated incremental validity in the prediction of this criterion. The value of including the Ma and Pd Harris-Lingoes subscales in criminal risk assessment is discussed.

Comparison of the Mexican and American norms of the MMPI-2.

This article presents the results of the norms for the Mexican general population in comparison with the North American normative population. This study addresses psychopathology from the point of view in which emic and etic traditions are combined. The Mexican sample includes 1744 adults from different regions of the country. Means and standard deviations were calculated and compared with the North-American normative sample. Cronbach alpha coefficients also were obtained. The greatest differences observed were in the scales L (lies) and 5 (masculinity-femininity), which indicates that the greater distinctions between both populations are with respect to test-taking attitude in taking the test, which may be due to cultural factors. In comparison to the American norms, the Mexican population does not show psychopathology on the MMPI-2 scales.

Assessment of psychological functioning in adolescent earthquake victims in Colombia using the MMPI-A.

The earthquake that hit Armenia, Colombia, on January 25, 1999, dramatically impacted the lives of thousands of people, including children and adolescents. This study used the Hispanic MMPI-A to clinically assess for ongoing psychopathology in a group of 59 adolescent earthquake victims. Their scores on the basic, content, and supplementary scales of the instrument were compared to those of a control group of 62 Colombian adolescents with similar socioeconomic, educational, and ethnic backgrounds. The results showed no clinically significant elevations for the earthquake victims indicating that the disaster had not resulted in diagnosable psychopathology. When compared to controls, earthquake victims showed significant elevations on D, Pt, and Sc indicating that they were mildly affected (but within the normal range) by the earthquake. The results are discussed in the context of cultural factors and the contemporary disaster and resiliency literature.
