Joint quantum measurement using unbalanced array detection.

We have measured the joint Q-function of a highly multimode field using unbalanced heterodyne detection with a charge-coupled device array detector. We use spectral interferometry between a weak signal field and a strong, 100 fs duration local oscillator pulse to reconstruct the joint quadrature amplitude statistics of about 25 temporal modes. By adjusting the time delay between the signal and local oscillator pulses we are able to shift all the classical noise to modes distinct from the signal. This obviates the need to use a balanced detector.

Circular dichroism in photo-single-ionization of unoriented atoms.

We predict circular dichroism in photo-single-ionization angular distributions from spherically symmetric atomic states if the ionized electron is detected using two-slit interferometry. We demonstrate that the resulting electron interference pattern captures phase information on quadrupole corrections to the photoionization amplitude lost in conventional angular distributions.

Generic entanglement generation, quantum statistics, and complementarity.

A general and an arbitrarily efficient scheme for entangling the spins (or any spinlike degree of freedom) of two independent uncorrelated identical particles by a combination of two particle interferometry and which way detection is formulated. It is shown that the same setup could be used to identify the quantum statistics of the incident particles from either the sign or the magnitude of measured spin correlations. Our setup also exhibits a curious complementarity between particle distinguishability and the amount of generated entanglement.

Interplay of Rabi oscillations and quantum interference in semiconductor quantum dots.

We investigated the manifestation of Rabi oscillation in the coherent dynamics of excitons in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots. The Rabi oscillation phenomenon was directly observed as a function of the input pulse area. Furthermore, by performing wave packet interferometry in the nonlinear excitation regime, we discover a new type of quantum interference phenomenon, resulting from the interplay between Rabi oscillation and quantum interference.

Helfrich repulsion and dynamical phase separation of multicomponent lipid bilayers.

Thermal fluctuations of surfactant bilayers in an aqueous solution produce an effective, long-range repulsion that can lead to a continuous unbinding transition. We report on an optical interferometry study of the thermal fluctuations of multicomponent bilayers close to the unbinding transition. We find that, in contrast to the case of single-component bilayers, the thermal fluctuation spectrum of multicomponent bilayers does not agree with a continuous unbinding transition but instead indicates the proximity of an unbinding tricritical point.

Generating and probing a two-photon fock state with a single atom in a cavity.

A two-photon Fock state is prepared in a cavity sustaining a "source mode" and a "target mode," with a single circular Rydberg atom. In a third-order Raman process, the atom emits a photon in the target while scattering one photon from the source into the target. The final two-photon state is probed by measuring by Ramsey interferometry the cavity light shifts induced by the target field on the same atom. Extensions to other multiphoton processes and to a new type of micromaser are briefly discussed.

Universal pion freeze-out in heavy-ion collisions.

Based on an evaluation of data on pion interferometry and on particle yields at midrapidity, we propose a universal condition for thermal freeze-out of pions in heavy-ion collisions. We show that freeze-out occurs when the mean free path of pions lambda(f) reaches a value of about 1 fm, which is much smaller than the spatial extent of the system at freeze-out. This critical mean free path is independent of the centrality of the collision and beam energy from the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron to the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

Off-diagonal geometric phase for mixed states.

We extend the off-diagonal geometric phase [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3067 (2000)]] to mixed quantal states. The nodal structure of this phase in the qubit (two-level) case is compared with that of the diagonal mixed state geometric phase [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2845 (2000)]]. Extension to higher dimensional Hilbert spaces is delineated. A physical scenario for the off-diagonal mixed state geometric phase in polarization-entangled two-photon interferometry is proposed.

Light transport through the band-edge states of Fibonacci quasicrystals.

The propagation of light in nonperiodic quasicrystals is studied by ultrashort pulse interferometry. Samples consist of multilayer dielectric structures of the Fibonacci type and are realized from porous silicon. We observe mode beating and strong pulse stretching in the light transport through these systems, and a strongly suppressed group velocity for frequencies close to a Fibonacci band gap. A theoretical description based on transfer matrix theory allows us to interpret the results in terms of Fibonacci band-edge resonances.

Precision measurement and compensation of optical stark shifts for an ion-trap quantum processor.

Using optical Ramsey interferometry, we precisely measure the laser-induced ac-Stark shift on the S(1/2)-D(5/2) "quantum bit" transition near 729 nm in a single trapped 40Ca+ ion. We cancel this shift using an additional laser field. This technique is of particular importance for the implementation of quantum information processing with cold trapped ions. As a simple application we measure the atomic phase evolution during a n x 2 pi rotation of the quantum bit.

Precision neutron interferometric measurement of the nd coherent neutron scattering length and consequences for models of three-nucleon forces.

We have performed the first high precision measurement of the coherent neutron scattering length of deuterium in a pure sample using neutron interferometry. We find b(nd)=(6.665+/-0.004) fm in agreement with the world average of previous measurements using different techniques, b(nd)=(6.6730+/-0.0045) fm. We compare the new world average for the nd coherent scattering length b(nd)=(6.669+/-0.003) fm to calculations of the doublet and quartet scattering lengths from several modern nucleon-nucleon potential models with three-nucleon force (3NF) additions and show that almost all theories are in serious disagreement with experiment. This comparison is a more stringent test of the models than past comparisons with the less precisely determined doublet scattering length of (2)a(nd)=(0.65+/-0.04) fm.

Stable equidistant step trains during crystallization of insulin.

Bunching of growth steps plagues layerwise crystallization of materials in laboratory, industrial, and geological environments, and theory predicts that equidistant step trains are unstable under a variety of conditions. Searching for an example of stable equidistant step trains, we monitored the generation and spatiotemporal evolution of step trains on length scales from 100 nm to 1 mm during the crystallization of insulin, using atomic force microscopy and phase-shifting interferometry. We show that near-equidistant step trains are generated by single and cooperating screw dislocation. The lack of step-step interaction and the overall transport-controlled growth regime further regularize the step train and ensure the stability of the obtained equidistant arrangement.

Interference of quantum channels.

We show how interferometry can be used to characterize certain aspects of general quantum processes and, in particular, the coherence of completely positive maps. We derive a measure of coherent fidelity, the maximum interference visibility, and the closest unitary operator to a given physical process under this measure.

Mixed state geometric phases, entangled systems, and local unitary transformations.

The geometric phase for a pure quantal state undergoing an arbitrary evolution is a "memory" of the geometry of the path in the projective Hilbert space of the system. We find that Uhlmann's geometric phase for a mixed quantal state undergoing unitary evolution depends not only on the geometry of the path of the system alone but also on a constrained bilocal unitary evolution of the purified entangled state. We analyze this in general, illustrate it for the qubit case, and propose an experiment to test this effect. We also show that the mixed state geometric phase proposed recently in the context of interferometry requires unilocal transformations and is therefore essentially a property of the system alone.

Achieving geodetic motion for LISA test masses: ground testing results.

The low-frequency resolution of space-based gravitational wave observatories such as LISA (Laser Interferometry Space Antenna) hinges on the orbital purity of a free-falling reference test mass inside a satellite shield. We present here a torsion pendulum study of the forces that will disturb an orbiting test mass inside a LISA capacitive position sensor. The pendulum, with a measured torque noise floor below 10 fN m/square root of Hz from 0.6 to 10 mHz, has allowed placement of an upper limit on sensor force noise contributions, measurement of the sensor electrostatic stiffness at the 5% level, and detection and compensation of stray dc electrostatic biases at the millivolt level.

Wide-band direct measurement of thermal fluctuations in an interferometer.

We directly measured mechanical thermal fluctuations in mirrors over three decades of frequency range using a short-length Fabry-Perot interferometer. This is the first such measurement at wide off-resonant frequency band that is much lower than mechanical resonant frequencies. Theoretically, the mechanical fluctuation in mirrors had been thought to become the principal noise in precise interferometry, such as in gravitational wave detection. We identified the thermally induced noises in the interferometer, the so-called substrate Brownian noise, substrate thermoelastic noise, and coating Brownian noise.

Robust polarization-based quantum key distribution over a collective-noise channel.

We present two polarization-based protocols for quantum key distribution. The protocols encode key bits in noiseless subspaces or subsystems and so can function over a quantum channel subjected to an arbitrary degree of collective noise, as occurs, for instance, due to rotation of polarizations in an optical fiber. These protocols can be implemented using only entangled photon-pair sources, single-photon rotations, and single-photon detectors. Thus, our proposals offer practical and realistic alternatives to existing schemes for quantum key distribution over optical fibers without resorting to interferometry or two-way quantum communication, thereby circumventing, respectively, the need for high precision timing and the threat of Trojan horse attacks.
