[Computer evaluation of tocograms following administration of Spasmalgan (denaverin)].

Computer analysis of tocograms after administration of Spasmalgan (Denaverin). The influence of spasmolyant Spasmalgan on 5 parameters of labour has been examined in 50 intraamniotic derived tocograms by on line fetal monitoring. Only a little increase of the basal tone has been shown after administration of Spasmalgan. The method is recommended for testing the uterotropic influence of pharmacons in labour.

Investigation into the pharmacodynamics of the carcinogen N-nitrodimethylamine.

N-Nitrodimethylamine (NTDMA) was found to be a carcinogen of the nasal mucosa leading to aesthesioneuroepitheliomas in BDVI rats. N-Nitromethylamine (NTMA), a product of the oxidative metabolism of NTDMA, was also carcinogenic, leading to neurogenic tumours of the lumbar region of the spine. The 100,000 X g supernatant of both liver and nasal mucosa contains an enzyme capable of reducing NTDMA to N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). In the microsomal fraction of both organs, NTDMA is oxidized to formaldehyde. The fractions from nasal mucosa have a higher capacity than the corresponding liver fractions to both oxidize and reduce NTDMA. NDMA was detected in blood and urine from rats treated with NTDMA. The elimination of NTDMA from blood occurs biphasically, with an initial half-life of 3.5 min.

Neurotoxicologic examination of rats dermally exposed to 2,4-D amine for three weeks.

There was no evidence of peripheral neuropathy or other neurotoxicity in rats dermally treated with a 12% aqueous solution of the amine salt of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D amine). Male and female Fischer 344 rats were treated on the skin of all four limbs with 2,4-D amine for 2 hr/day, 5 days/week, for 3 weeks. Measurements were: body weights, hindlimb grip strength, accelerating rod performance, single and paired pulse electrophysiology of the caudal and sciatic nerves, hindfoot H-reflexes, light microscopy of brain, spinal cord, sciatic nerve, tibial nerve, digital nerve, and electron microscopy of the tibial nerve. The experiment continued for up to one month postexposure. Treatment caused a weight loss in both male and female rats and caused minor skin changes during treatment in both sexes. No other treatment-related effects were found.

Trimethylamine: the substance mainly responsible for the fishy odor often associated with bacterial vaginosis.

The vaginal discharge of women with bacterial vaginosis often has a prominent fishy odor. Intensification of this fishy odor by the addition of strong base to the vaginal discharge suggests that it could be due to trimethylamine, the substance responsible for the characteristic odor of spoiling fish. Samples were collected from 11 women with a vaginal discharge having a fishy odor and from 10 women with no detectable odor. Gas chromatographic analysis of headspace samples of alkalinized vaginal discharges indicated the presence of trimethylamine in all 11 samples with the fishy odor but not in the other samples. The chemical identity of trimethylamine was confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of headspace samples from two vaginal discharge samples. It is concluded that trimethylamine is the primary cause of the fishy odor associated with bacterial vaginosis.

Uremic toxins, and their effect on intermediary metabolism.

In the late stages of chronic renal damage the functional mass of the kidney is reduced and there is progression to renal insufficiency, usually called uremia, in which all aspects of renal function are affected. The complexity of the biochemical aspects of the syndrome of uremia is a manifestation of the wide variety and nature of the individual disorders that contribute to the pathogenesis of the final clinical syndrome. One major feature is the retention of metabolic end products and their effects, as toxins, on intermediary metabolism. The retained end products, working singly or in combination, probably affect metabolic pathways by some modification of enzymic reactions. They act at the cell membrane level. Although "middle molecules" have been incriminated as uremic toxins, recent attention has also focused on trace elements--especially aluminum, which has been implicated in the pathogenesis of two major disorders, osteomalacic dialysis osteodystrophy and dialysis encephalopathy.

[Measure of the activity of a quaternary aldehyde-ammonia complex against reference bacteria strains and 50 hospital strains].

Concentrations of a disinfectant complex effective against hospital strains were determined using the dilution-neutralization method (AFNOR T72 150). Results were compared to those obtained with reference bacterial strains. A 99.999% reduction in viable bacteria requires significantly higher concentrations for hospital isolates than for reference strains.
