The use of gloves in cross-infection control. A historical note.

Routine glove wearing has been an integral part of surgery for almost a century, but it has only recently been considered appropriate for dentists and their staff while treating patients. This paper traces the history of glove use in surgery and compares this with experience of glove use in dentistry at the present time.

Desmond Greer Walker Award. Rubber dam acceptance.

Probably no other technique or instrument used in dentistry is so universally accepted and advocated by the recognised authorities and so universally ignored by the practising dentists, as the rubber dam. According to the 1983 Survey by the British Endodontic Society, only 5% of the dentists working principally in the National Health Service in England used rubber dam for endodontic treatment. Presumably this figure is even lower for non-endodontic procedures.
