Adaptive computational models of fast learning of motion direction discrimination.

In a previous study, we found that subjects' performance in a task of direction discrimination in stochastic motion stimuli shows fast improvement in the absence of feedback and the learned ability is retained over a period of time. We model this learning using two unsupervised approaches: a clustering model that learns to accommodate the motion noise, and an averaging model that learns to ignore the noise. Extensive simulations with the models show performance similar to psychophysical results.

Global and local computational models for aqueous solubility prediction of drug-like molecules.

The aim of this study was to develop in silico protocols for the prediction of aqueous drug solubility. For this purpose, high quality solubility data of 85 drug-like compounds covering the total drug-like space as identified with the ChemGPS methodology were used. Two-dimensional molecular descriptors describing electron distribution, lipophilicity, flexibility, and size were calculated by Molconn-Z and Selma. Global minimum energy conformers were obtained by Monte Carlo simulations in MacroModel and three-dimensional descriptors of molecular surface area properties were calculated by Marea. PLS models were obtained by use of training and test sets. Both a global drug solubility model (R(2) = 0.80, RMSE(te) = 0.83) and subset specific models (after dividing the 85 compounds into acids, bases, ampholytes, and nonproteolytes) were generated. Furthermore, the final models were successful in predicting the solubility values of external test sets taken from the literature. The results showed that homologous series and subsets can be predicted with high accuracy from easily comprehensible models, whereas consensus modeling might be needed to predict the aqueous drug solubility of datasets with large structural diversity.

Metabolic dynamics in the human red cell. Part IV--Data prediction and some model computations.

The biochemical information on the basic cellular determinants of the human red cell has been compiled into a comprehensive model of the red cell metabolic machinery. This model gives a consistent interpretation--both qualitative and quantitative--of the experimental findings. The predicted steady states and the dynamic states of the model are compared with the experimental findings, and the utility of this model is demonstrated.

The response of oscillating glycolysis to perturbations in the NADH/NAD system: a comparison between experiments and a computer model.

The glycolytic pathway is described by a set of coupled non linear differential equations of first order with respect to time. The individual terms of these equations consist of enzyme velocities assuming a steady state hypothesis for the enzymatic forms. These are specified and the system is solved numerically. Oscillations are explained by interaction of PFK with the adenylate system. The conditions for the occurrence of oscillations are tested in a series of computer runs. The phase relations between intermediates of the model agree with those found in yeast cells. As an application of the model the disturbation of oscillations by the addition of acetaldehyde is simulated. The predictions of the model agree with experimental results.

A computer model of the periodontal ligament space in man.

An engineering model of the periodontal ligament fibres was used to calculate length changes in the fibres with: direct occlusal forces on the tooth, occlusal loads on other teeth in the arch and splinting. The fibre elongations appear to influence tooth eruption, the clinical behaviour of splinted and non-splinted teeth, and the establishment of vertical dimension of occlusion and occlusal plane height. The model also provides insight into the controversy surrounding the intermediate plexus of the ligament.

A computer modelling system for the biomechanical interaction in product design.

We introduce our system approach to rehabilitation engineering in which the user product interaction is emphasised. We then discuss a computer based approach to the problems of design making use of analysis software for the mechanical interaction. Our developing system for design, making use of anthropometric data and mechanisms analysis, is placed in the context of ergonomics and occupational biomechanics. We report our initial case study of this approach.

A computational model of binocular depth perception.

We point out that the horizontal disparities between a pair of retinal images are inadequate for computing the three-dimensional structure of a scene unless supplemented by independent information about the distance and direction of the fixation point. We suggest that this supplementary information is derived not from non-visual sources, but from the vertical disparities of a few non-meridional image points. This hypothesis is shown to account quantitatively for Ogle's induced effect--the marked distortion of a scene by a vertically magnifying lens placed in front of one eye.

Computer model for action potential propagation through branch point in myelinated nerves.

A mathematical model is developed for simulation of action potential propagation through a single branch point of a myelinated nerve fiber with a parent branch bifurcating into two identical daughter branches. This model is based on a previously published multi-layer compartmental model for single unbranched myelinated nerve fibers. Essential modifications were made to couple both daughter branches to the parent branch. There are two major features in this model. First, the model could incorporate detailed geometrical parameters for the myelin sheath and the axon, accomplished by dividing both structures into many segments. Second, each segment has two layers, the myelin sheath and the axonal membrane, allowing voltages of intra-axonal space and periaxonal space to be calculated separately. In this model, K ion concentration in the periaxonal space is dynamically linked to the activity of axonal fast K channels underneath the myelin in the paranodal region. Our model demonstrates that the branch point acts like a low-pass filter, blocking high-frequency transmission from the parent to the daughter branches. Theoretical analysis showed that the cutoff frequency for transmission through the branch point is determined by temperature, local K ion accumulation, width of the periaxonal space, and internodal lengths at the vicinity of the branch point. Our result is consistent with empirical findings of irregular spacing of nodes of Ranvier at axon abors, suggesting that branch points of myelinated axons play important roles in signal integration in an axonal tree.

[Information-computer modeling of suppression of the infectious tuberculosis process through sterilization of medical instrumentation and equipment by using electrochemically activated aqueous solutions].

The paper deals with the topical problem in the informational computer simulation of suppression of an infectious tuberculosis process by applying electrochemically activated aqueous solutions in order to sterilize medical instruments and equipment. The efficiency of use of electrochemically activated aqueous solutions for sterilization of medical instruments and equipment and for disinfection of other contaminated objects was evaluated by an computer-aided experiment and a retrospective analysis of the epidemic situation by using the original mathematical models of infectious processes by taking into account the aspects of medical engineering technology.
