Occlusal and oral health status of a group of 3-8-year-old South African black children.

This study determined the oral health status of a group of 3-8-year-old South African black children, comprising a total of 214 children from the townships of Garankuwa, Shosanguwe, Mabopane, Hebron and Erasmus who attended a school in Akasia, Greater Pretoria Metropolitan Substructure. The decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft), oral hygiene status, dental IQ and malocclusion status were determined. The study found that the children's oral health status and occlusal status were unacceptable. The level of their dental IQ scores was low, their oral hygiene poor, and they were in urgent need of primary and secondary dental care. In addition they were in need of both preventive and interceptive orthodontic care. A national strategy to address primary dental health care is recommended.

Microscopic and histochemical evaluation of demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft in association with implant placement: a case report.

A case report is presented in which a titanium implant was placed into a defect resulting from the extraction of an impacted tooth; the defect was filled with demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft particles without a membrane barrier. After a 6-month healing period the bone defect had completely healed and the tissue present had macroscopic features similar to mature bone. Histologic examination of this tissue showed that, in all demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft particles, mineralization nodules were scattered inside the demineralized bone; in the areas where the mineralization nodules were present, osteocyte lacunae could be observed. In the case presented, significant new vital bone formation was observed 6 months after placement of a demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft.

[Clinical and morphological studies on dysostotic malformations of the jaw].

In the introduction to this paper an outline is given of dysostotic malformations of the jaw. Following this, the author reports observations made on sixty-five patients. Clinical, roentgenological, electromyographic, histological, and karyological, examinations made on this patient stock yielded numerous, hitherto undescribed results which, among other things, allow the previous classification of syndromes of the bronchial arch to be extended to include additional conditions.
