Preliminary results of a new sanitation program for the eradication of enzootic bovine leukosis.

The program under discussion is based on results obtained during transmission studies in which specific antibodies were detected in the immunodiffusion test earlier than antigen in peripheral blood leukocytes. Furthermore, it could be demonstrated that seroconversion does not seem to occur later than 3 months after transmission of the infectious agent. The results obtained in 11 herds are presented. The program is as follows: when the result of the immunodiffusion test becomes available all positive animals above 6 months of age are immediately removed from the herd. The remaining animals are checked at intervals of 3 months and sero-positives are always instantly removed. In pursuing the program a number of herds have obviously reachend 2 years old.

[Non-surgical sanitation in patients with obstetrical and gynecological infections].

The intra-aortic++ introduction of a complex of drugs was performed to 34 patients with sepsis of obstetric-gynecological etiology. The disease appeared in 23 patients after extrahospital abortions, in 7 patients after delivery, in 4 patients after operation of cesarean section. Septic pneumonia took place in 23 patients. Antiseptic treatment was also used in all the patients. Recovery was noted in 32 of 34 patients, 23 of them were discharged from the hospital without removal of the uterus. Conclusion may be made that the intra-aortic++ administration of drugs is a highly effective method of treatment of obstetric-gynecological sepsis.

[Biotechnological principles and environmental hygiene aspects of in situ sanitation methods in soil and groundwater areas].

Biotechnological in situ measures can become a suitable mean to compete with a broad spectrum of mainly organic contaminants in soil and ground water environments. They can partly follow the spread of the contaminants, are ecologically safe and economically reasonable. Their application, however, is less effective at high concentrations of the contaminants, in the presence of toxicants and also under hydraulically unsuitable conditions. Care must be taken to avoid possible side-effects of the nutrient added, enriched microbial biomass, and some metabolical products. Long-term effects of in situ remediation techniques, and especially in connection with the possible use of added microorganisms, are not well known, yet. There is a need for further research in this complex field, in order to establish a scientific base because until now these remediation techniques were mainly based on empirical views.

[Sanitizing contaminated soil and groundwater pipes by microbiological and physico-chemical methods].

The contribution reports on two contamination cases, i.e., a waterwork "Durlacher Wald" and an industrial plant "Oberrheingraben" which were remedied using biological and physico-chemical methods. Furthermore, it deals with the laboratory investigations of the degradation of hydrocarbons, and also discusses briefly the advantages and problems of the microbiological remediation techniques.

[Non-operative sanitation of suppurative-septic foci].

The authors made an analysis of their experience with treatment of 63 patients with abscessing pneumonia and gangrene of the lungs, 137 patients with peritonitis, 27 patients with gynecological sepsis, 80 patients with pyo-necrotic foci in lower extremity tissues. They used the method of regional (intraaortal, intraarterial) infusions of drugs which is thought to open new possible ways of nonoperative treatment of pyoseptic foci of various localizations.
