The magnetic field influence on the polymorph composition of CaCO3 precipitated from carbonized aqueous solutions.

One of the most debated effects the magnetic fields exert on aqueous solutions and dispersions is their influence on the crystal structure of the main scale component, CaCO3. This study presents the results of an experimental program performed to quantitatively evaluate influence of the key magnetic treatment parameters--magnetic induction, exposure time, and fluid velocity--on the polymorph composition of CaCO3, precipitated from carbonized aqueous solutions. The results show that magnetic treatment favored the precipitation of aragonite. The key treatment parameters affecting the aragonite content were the magnetic induction and the exposure time, while the fluid velocity exerted no significant influence. The magnetic field has no significant influence on the zeta potential of the precipitated particles in any stage of the treatment. These experimental findings indicate that the magnetic field influence on the crystal structure of CaCO3 cannot be attributed to the magnetohydrodynamic influence on the charge distribution within the electrical double layer of the forming crystallites. The results rather suggest that the magnetic fields influence the CaCO3 polymorph phase equilibrium either by influencing the CO2/water interface or through the hydration of CO3(2-) ions prior to the formation of stable crystal nuclei in the solution.

The effect of the size of raw Gd(OH)3 precipitation on the crystal structure and PL properties of Gd2O3:Eu.

Our experiments show that cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) has an obvious effect on the particle size of the precipitation of Gd(OH)3. Without CTAB, the particle size of the Gd(OH)3 precipitation is about 50 nm, whereas with CTAB, the particle size is less than 5 nm. We propose a mechanism where CTAB micelles work as a catalyst for the nucleation process and result in the precipitation of 5 nm particles. These small particles, after heat treatment at 1073 K, did not result in small Gd2O3 nanoparticles of the same size, but instead, forming crystals of 30-80 nm size in both cubic and monoclinic phases. When monitoring the photoluminescence (PL) peak at 610 nm, we found that the charge transfer state (CTS) absorption amplitude of Eu-O is reduced in the mixed structures. We speculate that the mixed structures modify the surface properties of the Gd2O3:Eu nanoparticles, leading to the reduction of Eu-O CTS absorption.

Cosmogenic 7Be deposition in North Wales: 7Be concentrations in sheep faeces in relation to altitude and precipitation.

Beryllium-7 (7Be) is a cosmogenic radionuclide with a half-life of 53.3 days produced mostly in the stratosphere by cosmic ray spallation of nitrogen and oxygen and entering the lower troposphere by atmospheric circulation processes. Most of the nuclide is removed by rainout during precipitation, so given that rainfall generally increases with altitude, it was considered probable that 7Be deposition would also be greater at higher altitudes. The aim of this study was to determine if there is any relationship between 7Be concentrations, altitude and precipitation by measuring 7Be activity within sheep faeces. An area of North Wales and Northwest England was selected for study, extending from the Dee Estuary at sea level to Snowdon at 1065 m. The results obtained showed a significant increase in 7Be activity with increasing altitude and precipitation consistent with predictions based on the existing literature.

Selegiline modifies the extinction of responding following morphine self-administration, but does not alter cue-induced reinstatement, reacquisition of morphine reinforcement, or precipitated withdrawal.

Selegiline is an irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase (MAO) with psychostimulant and neuroprotective effects which can prevent decreases in dopamine efflux that follow opiate withdrawal. The present study evaluated effects of selegiline treatment on morphine-seeking behavior and morphine reinforcement in Wistar rats (n = 26). In additional animals (n = 30), the ability of single doses of selegiline to modify naloxone-precipitated withdrawal was determined. After pretreatment with noncontingent morphine to establish opiate dependence, rats acquired self-administration of intravenous morphine. Daily intravenous treatment with saline or 2.0mg kg(-1) doses of selegiline was then initiated and continued over 14 days during extinction, reinstatement, and reacquisition of morphine self-administration. To reduce the potential for psychostimulant effects, selegiline was administered approximately 1h following self-administration, extinction, or reinstatement sessions. In some animals (n = 23), effects of saline or selegiline administration on locomotor activity were determined following extinction sessions. Daily selegiline treatment decreased the number of ratios completed and increased response latency during extinction, without modifying these measures during reinstatement or reacquisition of morphine self-administration. Chronic selegiline treatment increased locomotor activity recorded between 4 and 7h after selegiline administration on day 7 of extinction, but otherwise did not alter locomotor activity. Pretreatment with single, 2.0mg kg(-1) doses of selegiline did not modify naloxone-precipitated withdrawal. In conclusion, pretreatment with selegiline produced only a small decrease in responding during extinction of morphine self-administration and did not modify cue-induced reinstatement of morphine-seeking behavior, reacquisition or morphine reinforcement, or precipitated withdrawal.

Seasonal factors controlling mineral precipitation in the acid mine drainage at Donghae coal mine, Korea.

Monitoring over a 12 month period in the Sanae creek flow in acid mine drainage, Donghae coal mine area, demonstrates that the concentrations of dissolved metals and sulphate are highest during autumn when water flow in the creek is at its lowest. The highest pH values of the stream were measured in April and May, whereas the lowest pH was recorded in October. The Fe concentration of stream water rapidly decreased downstream due to the precipitation of Fe oxyhydroxide and/or oxyhydroxysulfate phases in the stream. Mineral precipitates in the creek in the Donghae mine area show various colours such as brownish yellow (Munsell colour 9.5 YR hues), reddish brown (Munsell colour 3.5 YR hues) and white depending on seasons and distance from the pollution source in the creek. Such phenomena are attributed to the variation in pH and chemical composition of stream water caused by seasonal factors. The measured pH ranges in stream water of the brownish yellow, white and reddish brown precipitates are pH 3.2-4.5, 4.5-6.0 and 5.3-6.9, respectively.

Characterization of a protein kinase-substrate complex precipitable with Ca2+ from the cytosol fraction of AH-66 hepatoma cells.

A protein kinase-substrate complex was precipitated by adding Ca2+ to the cytosol fraction of AH-66 ascites hepatoma cells. The amount of the precipitated complex was increased with increasing concentrations of Ca2+ and reached a plateau at about 5 mM Ca2+. In the presence of [gamma-32P]ATP, extensive uptake of radioactive phosphate into this complex occurred. The phosphorylation reaction was little affected by addition of cyclic nucleotides, Ca2+-phospholipid, Ca2+-calmodulin. When the complex after phosphorylation was analyzed by SDS-PAGE, a protein with molecular weight of 33,000 was most heavily phosphorylated. These phenomena were also observed for mouse myeloid leukemia cells (M1 cells). By contrast, the addition of Ca2+ to the cytosol fractions of regenerating rat liver, normal rat liver or brain caused little precipitation of the complex.

Precipitated kappa-opioid receptor agonist withdrawal increase glutamate in rat locus coeruleus.

Extracellular fluid levels of excitatory amino acids (glutamate, Glu; and aspartate, Asp) in the locus coeruleus and the behavioral signs during naloxone-precipitated withdrawal from kappa-opioid receptor agonists, butorphanol and (5 alpha, 7 alpha, 8 beta) -(+)-N-methyl-N-[7-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-1-oxaspiro[4,5]dec-8-yl]-be nzaneacetamide (U-69,593), were investigated by in vivo microdialysis. Increases in levels of Glu, but not of Asp, were noted after naloxone (12 or 48 nmol/5 microliters, locus coeruleus)-precipitated withdrawal in the rats which had been intracerebroventricularly infused with butorphanol (26 nmol/1 microliters/h) or U-69,593 (26 nmol/10 microliters/h) for 3 days. The Glu levels in the locus coeruleus increased following administration of naloxone before and during the first 15-min sample after the precipitation of withdrawal in the butorphanol- or U-69,593-dependent rats. Furthermore, behavioral evidence of withdrawal (teeth-chattering, wet-dog shakes, etc.) was detected following the naloxone challenge in the butorphanol- and U-69,593-infused rats, but not in saline-infused controls. These results provide direct evidence to support the role of excitatory amino acids within the locus coeruleus in butorphanol or U-69,593 withdrawal.

Precipitation of crystallins from young rat lens by endogenous calpain.

The purpose of these experiments was to study the mechanism for precipitation of lens crystallins in cataract. An in vitro model was developed to activate the endogenous protease calpain II in the soluble proteins from young rat lens by addition of calcium in the presence of 120 mM KCl. Light-scattering, insoluble proteins were produced approximately 4-6 days after calpain II activation. Results showed that proteolysis was caused by activation of lens calpain II, proteolysis preceded precipitation by several days, and alpha-crystallin acted as a molecular chaperone against precipitation of crystallins caused by proteolysis. These data supported our hypothesis that calpain-induced proteolysis of the N-terminal arms of beta-crystallin polypeptides leads to a loss of normal oligomerization of beta-crystallin polypeptides and formation of abnormal insoluble aggregates, possibly stabilized by hydrophobic interactions.

Early stages of particle formation in precipitation reactions-quinacridone and boehmite as generic examples.

For many products, such as nanoparticulate systems, particle formation by precipitation is an essential procedural step. To learn more about the processes involved in precipitation, we investigated particle formation during precipitation reactions by means of online and offline methods. As model systems we chose the catalyst boehmite and the organic pigment quinacridone. The reactants were mixed in a mixing device and led into a reaction tube. At the end of the tube, a free jet of the suspension was produced. By varying the length of the reaction tube the time between mixing the reactants and the moment of observation was varied. Thus a time resolution down to 10 ms from the beginning of the reaction was obtained. Small-angle X-ray scattering on the free jet yielded online information about the structural inhomogeneities within the reacting systems. Transmission electron microscopy patterns obtained from quenched samples, which were taken by shooting copper grids through the free jet into liquid nitrogen, provided complementary information about structural features. Immediately after mixture an emulsion-like structure develops indicating that classical nucleation theory does not apply in the present systems. This finding can be explained by assuming instantaneous reaction at the interfaces of the two reactants that meet in the mixing device. From this preliminary state primary particles form with a size in the nanometer range. The observations can be rationalized by considering the underlying hydrodynamics of turbulent mixing of the reactants.

Effects of harman and harmine on naloxone-precipitated withdrawal syndrome in morphine-dependent rats.

The effects of the beta-carbolines, harman and harmine, on naloxone-precipitated withdrawal syndrome in morphine-dependent rats were investigated. Two morphine pellets containing 75 mg morphine base were implanted subcutaneously in the scapular area of adult male Wistar rats (200-250 g) under light ether anesthesia. Rats were then assigned to several groups (n = 12 for each group). Seventy-two hours after morphine implantation, harman (5 and 10 mg/kg), harmine (5 and 10 mg/kg) or saline was injected to rats intraperitoneally (ip). After 45 min, a morphine withdrawal syndrome was precipitated by naloxone (2 mg/kg, ip), and morphine withdrawal signs were observed and evaluated for 15 min. Harmine (5 and 10 mg/kg) attenuated significantly the intensity of all signs of morphine withdrawal except for jumping. While jumping behaviour appearing in morphine withdrawal was intensified by harman (5 and 10 mg/kg) treatment, harmine administration did not produce any significant change in the intensity of this sign. Harman attenuated significantly the intensity of wet dog shakes, writhing, defecation, tremor and ptosis. However, it produced no significant changes in the intensity of teeth chattering and diarrhea. Our results suggest that harman and harmine, beta-carbolines, have some beneficial effects on naloxone-precipitated morphine withdrawal syndrome in rats. Findings from the present study also indicated that harmine was more effective than harman on morphine abstinence syndrome.

Adenosine receptors are involved in the control of acute naloxone-precipitated withdrawal: in vitro evidence.

The effects exerted by adenosine A1 and A2 receptor agonists and antagonists on the acute opiate withdrawal induced by morphine were investigated in vitro. Following a 4 min in vitro exposure to morphine, the guinea-pig isolated ileum exhibited a strong contracture after the addition of naloxone. The P1 adenosine receptor agonist, adenosine, was able to reduce dose-dependently naloxone-precipitaded withdrawal. The same effect was induced by the adenosine A1 receptor agonist, N6-Cyclopentyladenosine (CPA) whereas the selective adenosine A2A receptor agonist CGS 21680 increased the naloxone-precipitated withdrawal phenomenon. Dipyridamole, a blocker of adenosine reuptake, induced a significant reduction of morphine dependence. Caffeine, an adenosine receptor antagonist, significantly increased the naloxone-precipitated withdrawal effect in a concentration dependent manner. The same effect was observed with 8-phenyltheophylline (8PT), an A1 adenosine receptor antagonist, whereas 3,7-dimethyl-1-propargylxanthine (DMPX), an A2 adenosine receptor antagonist, reduced the naloxone-precipitated withdrawal phenomenon. The results of our experiments indicate that both A1 and A2 adenosine receptor agonists and antagonists are able to influence opiate withdrawal in vitro, suggesting an important functional interaction between the adenosine receptors and opioid withdrawal.

Efficiency of biological treatment affected by high strength of ammonium-nitrogen in leachate and chemical precipitation of ammonium-nitrogen as pretreatment.

Leachate samples with a high strength of ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) were collected from a local landfill site in Hong Kong. Two experiments were carried out to study (1) the inhibition of microbial activity of activated sludge by NH4+-N and (2) the chemical precipitation of NH4+-N from leachate as a preliminary treatment prior to the activated sludge process. The experimental results demonstrated that the efficiency of COD removal decreased from 97.7% to 78.1%, and the dehydrogenase activity of activated sludge decreased from 9.29 to 4.93 microg TF/mg MLSS, respectively, when the NH4+-N concentration increased from 53 to 800 mg/l. The experiment also demonstrated that the NH4+-N in the leachate can be quickly precipitated as MgNH4PO4 x 6H2O after addition of MgCl2 x 6H2O + Na2HPO4 x 12H2O. The NH4+-N concentration was reduced from 5618 to 112 mg/l within 15 min when a molar ratio of Mg2+:NH+:PO4(3-) = 1:1:1 was used. The optimum pH to reach the minimum solubility of MgNH4PO4 x 6H2O was found to be in the range of 8.5-9.0. Attention should be given to the high salinity formed in the treated leachate by using MgCl2 x 6H2O + Na2HPO4 x 12H2O, which may affect microbial activity in the following biological treatment processes. Using two other combinations of chemicals [MgO + 85%H3PO4 and Ca(H2PO4)2 x H2O + MgSO4 x 7H2O] could minimise salinity generation after precipitation, while they were less efficient for NH4+-N removal.

Research on the variability of physico-chemical parameters characterising acid precipitation at the Jeziory Ecological Station in the Wielkopolski National Park (Poland).

Here the water quality of precipitation at the Adam Mickiewicz University Ecological station is presented for the period 1992-1997 to examine one of the main factors causing the degradation of the natural environment of the Weilkopolski National Park. In the course of daily observations the amount of rainfall, its electrical conductivity and pH were measured. As much as 61% of the tested precipitation had a pH < 4.6, and 92% had a pH < 5.6; some very low pH values, even below 3.0, were occasionally observed. The annual volume-weighted average pH during the full period was 4.28 and the lowest yearly average was 3.92 (1994). The chemical composition of precipitation showed the dominance of sulphate and calcium ions. Fluoride ions also contributed significantly to the anion charge. There were also small amounts of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. A chemical analysis of throughfall showed a considerably increased concentration of some ions, in particular potassium.

Sarmazenil-precipitated withdrawal: a reliable method for assessing dependence liability of benzodiazepine receptor ligands.

The benzodiazepine receptor partial inverse agonist sarmazenil exhibits in vivo proconvulsive, but not convulsant, effects in different paradigms in rodents. Intravenous sarmazenil challenge given at several fixed intervals following the termination of repeated treatment with a markedly sedative dose of diazepam in squirrel monkeys was effective in precipitating withdrawal signs, but had no comparable effects in vehicle-treated controls. The precipitated withdrawal reaction was not only robust, but it was consistently observed in all of the diazepam-treated monkeys. Thus, the use of sarmazenil challenge in the precipitated withdrawal paradigm provides a reliable method for assessing the development of physical dependence during repeated treatment with benzodiazepine receptor agonists.

Glaucoma associated with precipitates on the trabecular meshwork.

Precipitates on the trabecular meshwork may be the only sign of ocular inflammation. Fourteen patients who had glaucoma associated with precipitates on the trabecular meshwork and minimal or no other signs of ocular inflammation did not respond to usual antiglaucoma therapy. Treatment with topical steroids eliminated the precipitates and lowered the intraocular pressure. Careful gonioscopy is the key to accurate diagnosis.

Electron micrographic study of precipitates formed by interaction of silicic acid and alkaline phosphatase: contribution to a study of silica urolithiasis in cattle.

Association of alkaline phosphatase with silicic acid in precipitates formed in dilute solution was studied as a model for the nonspecific reaction between silicic acid and protein. Precipitates contained 68-83% of the silicic acid and 52-83% of the enzyme in the original mixture and were in the form of aggregates of roundish particles 150-800 nm in diameter. Enzyme protein formed a tightly bound layer on the surface of particles formed in solutions of freshly prepared silicic acid. The similarity between the ultrastructural features of precipitates from solutions of silicic acid and of internal portions of siliceous urinary calculi from cattle suggests that deposition of silica during development of such calculi is due, at least in part, to the interaction of protein with silicic acid in urine.

Electric pulse-induced precipitation of biological macromolecules in electroporation.

We found that electric discharge through solution of biological macromolecules (DNA, RNA and proteins) causes precipitation of significant portions of these macromolecules. This precipitation is a consequence of the interaction of biological macromolecules with the metal ions solubilized from the anode plate by the electric pulse, and occurs in both absence and presence of the cells in poration medium. Precipitated fractions of macromolecules sediments at the centrifugation speed used to pellet eukaryotic cells and does not dissolve when washed with buffer. Our data indicate a complication of the direct evaluation of electroporation efficiency based on the assumption that electroporated biological macromolecules which remain associated with the cells after several washes, are successfully electroinjected into the cytoplasm of cells.
