[Attention deficits and schizophrenia. Multidisciplinary approaches and the Stroop's test].

Since McGhie & Chapman's (1961) pioneering work, there have been continual attempts to clarify the link between attentional disturbances observable in schizophrenics and their schizophrenic symptoms. Venables (1964, 1977) claims that this diminution is a consequence of a badly controlled arousal, resulting in an inadequate filtering at the level of sensory input. Although the notion of a faulty sensory filter is simple and intellectually satisfying, this idea rapidly met with articulate opposition. Broadbent himself, in 1971, revised his model to take into account the way in which semantic aspects influence selective attention, and proposed the existence of a second stage of information processing, coming after the sensory filter. It became increasingly clear that progress in understanding selective attention would depend upon more centrally-directed approaches. In 1935, Stroop developed an ingenious way of studying selective attention. In his task, an "automatic", overlearned task (reading short words aloud) is put into conflict with a slightly more difficult task (colour-naming): the subject has to name the colour of the ink in which a word is printed, but the word itself is the name of a different colour. For instance, when the word "blue" is written in red ink, the correct response is "red". Typically, subjects find it difficult to inhibit the reading response, and take significantly more time to name a colour that forms an incompatible word than take to name the colour of a row of letters "x". This increased reaction time for the incompatible condition is attributed to an "interference" caused by the verbal information contained in the double stimulus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Lymphatic drainage of epidural space in rabbits.

Epidural lymphatic drainage was examined using epidural catheterization and an infusion of india ink. The india ink was drained quickly through a connecting lymphatic vessel from the nerve root foramen to the anterior lumbar lymphatic vessels. Many kinds of epidurally administered agents may be drained in this manner.

Evaluation of latex cryptococcal agglutination test in cryptococcal meningitis.

There is a growing demand for laboratory diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis, which is partly due to the increasing incidence of AIDS in Thailand. Presently, latex cryptococcal agglutination test (LCAT) is the most sensitive and specific test for laboratory cryptococcal meningitis. However, the test is very expensive and not readily available. LCAT must be developed locally to meet the need in Thailand. Rabbit antibody to C. neoformans was raised and used to sensitize latex particles used in LCAT. The developed LCAT was compared with a reference LCAT. The locally made LCAT was almost identical to the reference LCAT in sensitivity and specificity. It was extensively compared with the culture and India ink examination, in 73 cerebrospinal fluid specimens from cryptococcal meningitis and 155 specimens from other diseases. LCAT was found specific and more sensitive than fungal culture and India ink examination. LCAT is now extensively used in Thailand and recommended by Thai experts for use in all general hospitals. It is a simple, sensitive, specific, rapid and inexpensive tool for both diagnosis, prognosis and follow-up of cryptococcal meningitis.

[Granular biogenic amine-containing cells of the rat endometrium as components of the system of mononuclear phagocytes].

To 10 non-inbred white mature rats 24 h before sacrifice 7.0 ml of Indian ink colloid solution has been injected intraperitoneally. Histochemical reactions of Falk-Hillarp (catecholamines, serotonin) have been performed on nonfixed cryostat slices of the uterus, those of Cross, Even, Rost (histamine) against non-specific esterase and acid phosphatase. Before carrying out these reactions, the slices have been examined under luminescent microscope LUMAM-I3 by means of luminescent and usual illumination in order to reveal cells, possessing autoluminiscence and containing phagocyted Indian ink particles. Presence of autoluminescence, phagocyted material, catecholamines and serotonin, histamine, nonspecific esterase, acid phosphotase, prostaglandin E2 in the same granular cells of the rat endometrium have been stated. All cellular properties revealed are specific for macrophages. A conclusion is made that granular biogenic amine-containing cells of endometrium can be considered as belonging to the system of mononuclear phagocytes.

[Myocardial protection by retrograde cardioplegic perfusion through the right atrium].

Three types of cardioplegic delivery with ink into the isolated canine hearts were compared: (1) antegrade aortic root perfusion (AARP), (2) retrograde coronary sinus perfusion (RCSP) and (3) retrograde right atrium perfusion (RRAP). Ink was not distributed in the area distal to the coronary occlusion by AARP but well distribution in the same area by RCSP or RRAP. The right ventricular wall and ventricular septum were poorly perfused by RCSP but well perfused by RRAP. During cardiopulmonary bypass, RRAP created a fairly rapid cardiac arrest and satisfactory myocardial cooling. During Perfusion, the right heart was somewhat dilated but all the 10 canine hearts rebeat well. The left and right ventricular ejection fraction showed no significant change after bypass. No marked myocardial ultrastructural injury was found in left and right ventricles at the end of 90 minutes' ischemia. 4 patient, 1 of whom had 162 minutes' aortic cross-clamping received RRAP in operations on ascending aorta or coronary arteries and the myocardial protect ion was satisfactory. No complication was found pertaining to RRAP.

Pulmonary embolization-induced thymus hyperplasia in rabbits.

The effects of pulmonary embolization on the thymus glands of rabbits were studied morphologically, morphometrically and immunohistochemically. Pulmonary embolization was induced by an intravenous injection of 0.4 ml of Sephadex bead suspension (particle size; 150 to 300 microns, about 2,000 per ml). Both mean weight and volume of the thymus of rabbits killed at 2 weeks after embolization, were about 1.5 times more than those in control animals treated with physiologic saline. Histological examinations showed enlargement of the cortex and medulla of the thymus, and the embolized Sephadex beads in the branches of pulmonary arteries of the lung. The area ratios of medulla/cortex, in the embolization group and in control, were not significantly different. The cells with immunohistochemically positive staining of anti-nuclear antigen of monoclonal antibody of Ki-67, were found in both portions of the medulla and cortex. These data suggest that pulmonary embolization in the rabbit induces true thymic hyperplasia. An intravenous injection of India ink into the right highest intercostal artery revealed the distribution of bronchial arteries, which send the branches to the right lobe of the thymus. In 2 out of 4 animals killed 2 weeks after pulmonary embolization, the left lobe of the thymus as well as the right were stained with the injected ink. As it is known that pulmonary vascular obstruction caused a marked increase in the bronchial blood flow, these data suggest that the thymus blood supply from the bronchial arteries increases in the conditions of pulmonary embolization, which might contribute to thymus hyperplasia.

[The blood vessel system of the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii muscle].

The microvascular pattern of the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii muscle is investigated by filling the intratendinous vessels with an india ink-gelatin solution and by a histochemical method. Two different injection techniques are used. The first technique, which has been applied to six upper extremities, consists in an injection of 1000 ml india ink-gelatin solution into the subclavian artery. A tourniquet is placed above the elbow in order to avoid filling the vessels of the forearm. The second injection technique has been used in eight upper extremities. The injection is performed simultaneously into the subclavian and the brachial arteries, the axillary artery being ligated distally to the origin of the subscapular artery. Using the first method, two vascularization systems are visualized. The first arises from the supraglenoid tubercle; the second ascends from the proximal part of the biceps brachii muscle. The two systems do not seem to anastomose with each other end on. A small zone in the intracapsular part of the tendon seems to be avascular. The second injection technique results in much better filling of the intratendinous vessels than the first one. A continuous vascularization system is shown, extending from the supraglenoid tubercle to the biceps brachii muscle. In contrast to the results obtained by the first injection technique, no avascular zone is seen in the tendon of the biceps brachii muscle. The capillary system of different segments of three biceps tendons was also visualized by staining the vascular endothelium with a fluorisothiocyanate (FITC)-labelled lectin on cryostat sections. The sections were incubated with Ulex europaeus agglutinin I (UEA I).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Significance of the differential growth, relative tissue shifts and the vascular bed in limb development.

1. A method for planimetric measurement of areas of standardized dorsoventral projections of embryonal limbs was elaborated. The method permits a quantitative study of the growth of embryonic limbs at early stages of development, since the stage of flat limb bud until the stage at which the external shape of the limb (bending in joint regions and increase in volume) interferes with the simplification of its three-dimensional characteristics to two-dimensional ones of its dorsoventral projection. (Until stage 31-32HH for the chick embryo, see fig. 1 and 2). 2. A method of linear marking was elaborated (fig. 3). The marker proper are India-ink particles suspended in gelatin. Such stained gelatin is spread over a glass carrier (a glass fibre 10-20 microns thick) in the form of a thin film. After drying the fibre is cut in rods of a length desired for the appropriate linear mark. The marks can be introduced into the tissue by a single stab. After the gelatin film had swollen owing to the presence of tissue fluids, it is detached from the carrier surface and the carrier can be removed from the tissue. After the gelatin had been resorbed, a linear mark remains in the tissue. Deformations of the mark line and the scattering of India-ink particles which actually form the mark facilitates the assessment of the growth pattern of the respective marked tissue (see fig. 4-6). 3. During our studies of the differential growth of the wing bud with the method of linear marking the newly coined term "relative tissue shift" had to be specified. That term has been used for designating changes of the mutual position of tissue areas which could not be defined exactly as to their topography within a region or organ (such as the wing bud), showing fluent transitions between one another. If areas with different growth activities occur in the region studied, such areas undergo an uneven increase (differential growth). Thus another factor is added to those operating in the growth process, namely the direction of expansion of the different growing areas of the region studied to one another. The resultant of the mutual ratios of the voluminal growth of the neighbouring tissue areas and the directions of their expansion are the relative tissue shifts in the sense used in our studies.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

[Effect of cattle insemination carried out with and without assistance].

It has been studied whether help with the insemination work from a herdsman improves the result of the insemination. Totally 52,716 inseminations performed by 55 insemination technicians and veterinarians are included in the study, 18 per cent of these inseminations were performed without help. The data are analysed by a least squares procedure. The model used included lactation number of the cow (ai), insemination month (mj), the person who performed the insemination (ink), whether he had been helped with the insemination or not (hl) and interaction between ink and hl. As measure of the result of the insemination 60 days non-return percentage was used (total 60 days N.R.-% and 60 days N.R.-% corrected for short returns, zero to three days). There was found no significant effect of help at insemination on either of the 60 days N.R.-%'s studied. However, to encourage good contact between the farmers and the inseminating personnel, it is beneficial that herdsmen are present when cows are inseminated.

Lymph vessels of the heart. A comparative study of various techniques for light and electron microscopy.

This investigation was carried out in order to find out which was the best technique, among those reported in the literature, to recognize the small lymph vessels by light microscopy, while at the same time allowing a good ultrastructural preservation of tissues. The study was performed with rabbit hearts according to the following methods: (1) injection of India ink into the wall of the heart followed by perfusion with aldehyde fixative; (2) injection of India ink into the wall of the heart followed by immersion in aldehyde fixative; (3) treatment of the animals with histamine dihydrochloride by e.v. route and aldehyde (4) fixation by immersion; (5) fixation by immersion in osmium tetroxide fixative; fixation by immersion in aldehyde fixative; (6) fixation by perfusion with the same mixture as in (5). In cases (1), (2), (3), (5), and (6), the tissue specimens were postfixed in osmium tetroxide according to conventional methods. The validity of the different methods was checked by examining semithin sections of varying thickness at the light microscope and ultrathin sections at the transmission electron microscope. A comparative examination of the preparation showed that the method allowing the promptest recognition of the small lymph vessels, together with the best ultrastructural preservation and a good reproducibility of results was perfusion of the coronary circle.

A paradigm for tympanic epithelial dispersion.

It is more than a century since tympanic epithelial dispersion was first noted. This concept has not been analyzed mechanically until now. Serial photography of a circular disc holding 530 2.5 mm diameter ball-bearings, some of which were painted black to represent ink dots, has shown the centrifugal movement, enlargement and fragmentation of these marked areas when ball-bearings are added at random into the monolayer. Ink dots applied to mammalian drumheads move in a similar fashion. The model not only represented all the known tympanic epithelial phenomena faithfully, but could also be used to predict a mitotic index for the human drum. The index derived is consistent with normal human forearm skin if the dispersion of the corneocytes is due to the final shape change and insertion of lower epithelial cells into the lowest corneocyte layer.

Rapid in vitro capsule production by cryptococci.

Four agar media (blood, corn meal, chocolate, and Sabouraud's) and four liquid media (brain-heart infusion broth, one percent peptone broth, pooled human serum, and lyophilized rabbit coagulase plasma) were evaluated for their ability to enhance the production of capsules from four strains of Cryptococcus yeast within 48 hours at 25C and 35C. The yeast in serum and plasma was washed with distilled water prior to India ink preparation in order to prevent precipitation of the ink. The rabbit coagulase plasma was the only medium which consistently produced large capsules in 48 hours. Incubation temperatures and anticoagulant made little difference.

[Ultrasonographic study of the gastric wall].

Ultrasonographically, the normal gastric wall is delineated in 5 layers, 2 hypoechoic layers and 3 hyperechoic layers. To elucidate the sources of the reflected ultrasonic picture above, we infused India ink into the ultrasonographic wall of the resected human stomach. After the ultrasonographic examination, each stomach was examined histologically, and findings were compared with those of ultrasonography. The results were as follows: Ultrasonographically, an irregular hypoechoic nodule was seen in the 3rd layer, i.e., the middle hyperechoic layer, in cases in which India ink was seen in the submucosal layer histologically. Namely, the ultrasonographic 3rd layer was considered to be consistent with the submucosal layer.

Morphological and functional investigations on macrophages with heterogeneous fluorescent staining.

Four heterogeneous colors of fluorescence were demonstrated in macrophages from rabbit lymph nodes and mouse peritoneal exudate using fluorescent staining. They were bright blue, light blue, bluish green and yellow colors of fluorescence respectively. All of these 4 types of macrophages with heterogeneous colors of fluorescence could form EA or EAC rosettes and were able to phagocytose chicken erythrocytes and ink carbon granules. Among them the macrophages with bright blue color of fluorescence could form large EA or EAC rosettes and showed more rapid and stronger activity to phagocytose chicken erythrocytes, while those with bluish green and yellow colors of fluorescence showed stronger activity to phagocytose ink carbon granules.

Absence of encapsulation in strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine mastitis.

Thirty of 104 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from clinical cases of bovine mastitis in England grew as diffuse colonies in serum soft agar (SSA), 45 grew as mixed diffuse and compact colonies and 29 yielded compact colonies only. The compact strains grew as diffuse colonies in SSA after one passage in the mammary gland of mice. However, none of the strains had an unstained halo when examined by the India ink technique and there was a 99.99 per cent reduction in the viable numbers of the bacteria in 30 representative strains 24 hours after inoculation into the peritoneal cavity of mice. By contrast the truly encapsulated strain M had an unstained halo by the India ink technique and resisted phagocytic killing in the peritoneal cavity. It is concluded that these strains from cases of mastitis are not encapsulated and that growth as diffuse colonies in SSA is not a reliable test of encapsulation.

[Red pigment dyes and acne. Clinical observations and experimental investigations (author's transl)].

Acne-like changes were observed on a child's cheeks after colouring them with a red felt-tip pen. Numerous comedos appeared around a red tattoo coloured with felt-tip pen ink on a 16 year old girl. In animal experiments using rabbits' ears, two organic pigment inks found in these types of felt-tip pens could be proved to be the cause of a comedo-producing reaction. We are concerned here with quinacridone dye, pigment violet 19 (C.I.46.500), and the chlorine containing azo dye, pigment red 7 (C.I. 12.420).

Review of scanning electron and light microscopic methods in microcirculation research and their application in pancreatic studies.

The methods reviewed here include: scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of vascular corrosion casts, SEM of intact tissue, SEM of HCl-collagenase treated tissues, light microscopy (LM) of India ink or silicon rubber injected tissues, with stereomicrography, LM of tissue stained by perfusion with hematoxylin, and a correlative study of intravital microscopy with SEM of vascular corrosion casts or LM of India ink-injected tissue. The last technique allowed for both the examination of the microvascular architecture and blood flow in a particular tissue area. This paper shows that an adequate understanding of the microvasculature of the pancreas can only be gained when a variety of SEM techniques, together with other LM and TEM techniques are employed in a coordinated fashion. The intralobular arterioles of the pancreas supply the islets of Langerhans, exocrine acini, and duct system. Blood leaving the islets flows into the capillaries in the exocrine region through the insulo-acinar portal system and insulo-ductular portal system, although some fraction of the blood drains through venules into nearby veins. Thus, these studies in the pancreas indicate that the islets of Langerhans are situated in the center of the pancreatic microcirculatory bed so that the insular secretions are transferred in high concentrations through short vascular routes to the exocrine region of both the duct system and acini, presumably to act upon these structures.

[Demonstration and quantitative analysis of mononuclear phagocytes (monocytes and tissue macrophages) in the sinusoid capillaries of the rat adrenal cortex].

Mononuclear phagocytes of the Rat adrenal cortex were identified by light microscopy after injection of Chinese ink or colloidal iron (Imferon 200). They may be found as endothelial, periendothelial or intracapillary cells. The number of mononuclear phagocytes was much greater in the adult than in the young Rat, with a significant peak 3 hrs. after injection of Chinese ink in the young Rat and two peaks, 4 and 12 hrs. after injection in the adult.
