[Levels of hydroxycinnamic acids and free auxins in tobacco during photoperiodic induction].

The photoperiod controls hydroxycinnamic acids (involved in light signal transmission via interaction with the control proteins) in addition to plant hormones in tobaccos of different biotypes during the vegetative-to-reproductive switch of the genetic program. Hydroxycinnamic acids content shows a regular time pattern during the transition to flowering: the level of cinnamic acid decreases while the level of ferulic and chlorogenic acids increases despite the opposite photoperiodic response of the two tobaccos. Considering the possible use of hydroxycinnamic acids in light energy transduction, one can propose involving these substances in the reactions that induce plant flowering.

[Carcinoid heart disease and primary ovarian tumor].

Carcinoid heart disease occurs in about one third of patients with carcinoid syndrome, especially in those with ileal carcinoid and hepatic metastases. Patients with primary ovarian carcinoid tumor are extremely rare. In these circumstances, typical carcinoid cardiac lesions may develop unassociated with hepatic metastases, due to the venous drainage from the ovaries into the inferior vena cava of vasoactive released substances such as serotonin. The present report describes a woman with unrecognized primary ovarian carcinoid tumor, unexpectedly exhibiting heart failure. Diagnosis was performed on the basis of echocardiographic findings, occurrence of diarrhea and increased levels of 5-hydroxy-indoleacetic acid (5-HIAA). After complete surgical removal of the tumor, the patient was maintained under therapy with ACE-inhibitors and diuretics. Levels of 5-HIAA are still within normal range, there is regression of heart failure and echocardiographic findings are stabilized. These data confirm the importance of prompt diagnosis for a favorable prognosis of carcinoid heart disease.

A study of urinary tryptophan metabolites in relation to the phenylalanine content of semi-synthetic diets in a patient with phenylketonuria.

The influence of different phenylalanine (Phe) levels in semi-synthetic diets on the urinary excretion of tryptophan (Try) metabolites was studied in one untreated phenylketonuric (PKU) patient. Low dietary Phe decreased the excretion of indoleacetic acid, indolelactic acid, indican and Try but did not increase 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid. Under the low Phe diet, the excretion of N-acetyltryptophan, kynurenic and xanthurenic acid are greatly increased in the urine after a Try load. The possible significance of the extensive acetylation of Try and Phe is discussed in relation to the low blood levels of Try and PKU and to the phenomenon of decreasing blood Phe levels in PKU.

[Effects of NaCl stress on seedling growth and IAA metabolism of sweet potato and its relation to salt-tolerance].

Seedlings of three sweet-potato (Ipomoea batatas) cultivars with different salt-tolerance were stressed with different concentrations of NaCl during the seedling stage. Plant growth, leaf area growth, and IAA content decreased with increasing NaCl concentration, while the activities of POD and IAA oxidase increased. The extent of plant growth, leaf area growth and IAA content decrease and the extent of POD and IAA oxidase activity increase were larger in sensitive cultivar than those in moderately tolerant and tolerant cultivars. In addition, the content of chlorogenic acid increased under NaCl stress. Chlorogenic acid content reached its peak value at 170 mmol.L-1 of NaCl in sensitive and moderately tolerant cultivars and 225 mmol.L-1 of NaCl in tolerant cultivar. Chlorogenic acid content decreased with increasing NaCl concentration, but it was higher than that of the control.
