Torsional properties of nickel-titanium versus stainless steel endodontic files.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the torsional properties of stainless steel K-type .02 taper and nickel-titanium U-type .02 and .04 taper instruments. Torsion tests were performed on all three designs of instruments according to ANSI/ADA specification number 28. For each design, 20 instruments of each of three sizes (15, 25, and 35) were tested. The three parameters measured were maximum torque, torque at failure, and angular deflection. Stainless steel K-type .02 taper and nickel-titanium U-type .02 and .04 taper instruments met or exceeded specification standards for maximum torque. They also satisfied and far exceeded the standards for angular deflection at the failure point. The stainless steel instruments showed no significant difference between maximum torque and torque at failure, whereas both of the nickel-titanium instruments showed a significant differential between maximum torque and torque at failure.

Reviewing the DA001-files: a 16S rRNA chase on suspect #X99967, a Bacillus and Dutch underground activist.

A variant of 'the rRNA approach' on uncultured soil bacteria is discussed, which is mainly based on 16S rRNA rather than on genomic 16S rDNA. While the rDNA only reflects the presence of bacteria, the rRNA indicates much more the activity of bacteria. Hence, the presented strategy can indicate the involvement of uncultured bacteria to the metabolic activity of the total microbial community. The potentials and limitations of the applied techniques will be discussed: isolation of ribosomes from soil, temperature gradient gel electrophoresis, cloning and sequencing, and the verification of these data by V6 Southern blot hybridization, dot blot hybridization and in situ hybridization. By this and another novel rRNA quantification approach, the multiple competitive RT-PCR, it could be found that an uncultured Bacillus, recognized as ribotype DA001, contributes approximately 5-10% to all bacterial ribosomes in Dutch Drentse A grassland soils. These bacteria should be major operators of biogeochemical processes in soil.

Of apples and oranges, file drawers and garbage: why validity issues in meta-analysis will not go away.

This paper examines how threats to the validity of meta-analysis have been dealt with by clinical researchers employing this approach to literature review. Three validity threats were identified--mixing of dissimilar studies, publication bias, and inclusion of poor quality studies. Approaches to addressing these threats were evaluated for their effectiveness and popularity by surveying 32 published meta-analyses in clinical psychology. Distrust of meta-analysis, however, was found to transcend these validity threats. Other explanations for why this popular research strategy continues to receive widespread criticism were considered. Suggestions were made for how meta-analysis might better address these concerns.

[Automated maintenance of a central file of blood donors].

Data processing of medical information gathered by the physician working in the mobile unit, has been optimized and automatized. Thanks to the simultaneous use of an optical mark reader and a lightpen it is possible to achieve a quick data entry without a manual keyboard as soon as the mobile blood units bring back the samples. The donnors' medical cards which accompany each blood sample are transmitted from the mobile unit to the laboratory for better test accuracy. This simple system, operating since October 1984, has proven its reliability and efficiency.
