Spin waves in the frustrated kagomé lattice antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2.

The spin wave excitations of the S=5/2 kagomé lattice antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2 have been measured using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. We directly observe a flat mode which corresponds to a lifted "zero energy mode," verifying a fundamental prediction for the kagomé lattice. A simple Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian provides an excellent fit to our spin wave data. The antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is the primary source of anisotropy and explains the low-temperature magnetization and spin structure.

Neutron spin-echo investigation of slow spin dynamics in kagomé-bilayer frustrated magnets as evidence for phonon assisted relaxation in SrCr9xGa12-9xO19.

A neutron spin-echo investigation of the low temperature spin dynamics in two well-characterized kagomé bilayer compounds SrCr9xGa12-9xO19 (x=0.95, SCGO) and Ba2Sn2ZnCr7xGa10-7xO22 (x=0.97, BSZCGO) reveals two novel features. One is the slowing down of the relaxation rate without critical behavior at Tg, where a macroscopic spin-glass-like freezing occurs. The second is, in SCGO at 4 K (approximately Tg)<T<7 K, the relaxation rate activation energy Ea=7+/-0.4 meV, equal to the energy of a phonon mode, pointing out the role of spin-lattice coupling.

First order phase transition in the frustrated triangular antiferromagnet CsNiCl3.

By means of high-resolution ultrasonic velocity measurements, as a function of temperature and magnetic field, the nature of the different low temperatures magnetic phase transitions observed for the quasi-one-dimensional compound CsNiCl3 is established. Special attention has been devoted to the field-induced 120 degrees phase transition above the multicritical point in the H-T phase diagram where the elastic constant C44 reveals a steplike variation and hysteresis effects. These results represent the first experimental evidence that the 120 degrees phase transition is weakly first order and contradict the popular notion of new universality classes for chiral systems.

Spin-driven phonon splitting in bond-frustrated ZnCr2S4.

Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, and IR spectroscopy provide experimental evidence that the two subsequent antiferromagnetic transitions in ZnCr2S4 at TN1 = 15 K and TN2 = 8 K are accompanied by significant thermal and phonon anomalies. The anomaly at TN2 reveals a temperature hysteresis typical for a first-order transformation. Because of strong spin-phonon coupling, both magnetic transitions at TN1 and TN2 induce a splitting of phonon modes. The anomalies and phonon splitting observed at TN2 are suppressed by strong magnetic field. Regarding the small positive Curie-Weiss temperature Theta approximately 8 K, we argue that this scenario of two different magnetic phases with different magnetoelastic couplings results from the strong competition of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange.

Ferroelectric polarization flop in a frustrated magnet MnWO4 induced by a magnetic field.

The relationship between magnetic order and ferroelectric properties has been investigated for MnWO4 with a long-wavelength magnetic structure. Spontaneous electric polarization is observed in an elliptical spiral spin phase. The magnetic-field dependence of electric polarization indicates that the noncollinear spin configuration plays a key role for the appearance of the ferroelectric phase. An electric polarization flop from the b direction to the a direction has been observed when a magnetic field above 10 T is applied along the b axis. This result demonstrates that an electric polarization flop can be induced by a magnetic field in a simple system without rare-earth 4f moments.

Direct evidence for a dynamical ground state in the highly frustrated Tb(2)Sn(2)O(7) pyrochlore.

mSR experiments have been performed on a powder sample of the "ordered spin ice" Tb(2)Sn(2)O(7) pyrochlore. At base temperature (T=35 mK), the muon relaxation is found to be of dynamical nature, which demonstrates that strong fluctuations persist below the ferromagnetic transition (T(C)=0.87 K). Hints of long-range ordering appear as oscillations of the muon polarization when an external field is applied and also as a hysteretic behavior below T(C). We propose that dynamics results from fluctuations of clusters of correlated spins with the ordered spin ice structure.

Microscopic study of a pressure-induced ferromagnetic-spin-glass transition in the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore (Tb1-xLax)2Mo2O7.

We have studied (Tb1-xLax)2Mo2O7 pyrochlores by neutron diffraction and muSR at ambient and under applied pressure. (Tb,La) substitution expands the lattice and induces a change from a spin-glass-like state (x=0) to a noncollinear ferromagnet (x=0.2). In the ferromagnetic structure, the Tb moments orient close to their local anisotropy axes as for an ordered spin ice, while the Mo ones orient close to the net moment. The temperature dependence of the muSR relaxation rates and static local fields suggests a second transition of dynamical nature below the Curie transition. Under pressure, the long range order breaks down and a spin-glass-like state is recovered. The whole set of data provides a microscopic picture of the spin correlations and fluctuations in the region of the ferromagnetic-spin-glass threshold.

Polymorphonuclear neutrophils release 35S-labelled proteoglycans into cartilage during frustrated phagocytosis.

Rabbit peritoneal polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN), incubated in medium containing [35S]sulphate, incorporated 35S into proteoglycan and protein fractions. Approximately 46% of the 35S-labelled macromolecules associated with the PMN cells after 1 h of incubation were recovered in a cytoplasmic granule extract, the majority being present in azurophil granules. Analysis of the azurophil granule fraction showed that approximately 90% of the 35S-labelled macromolecules were proteoglycans. When challenged with heat-aggregated rabbit gamma-globulin in the presence of cytochalasin B and cGMP, PMN were induced to release granular enzymes but did not release 35S-labelled proteoglycans into the incubation medium. When incubated with articular cartilage slices, PMN released their granule 35S-labelled proteoglycan into the medium and into the cartilage matrix. Granule enzymes and 35S-labelled granule proteoglycan were extracted from the cartilage tissue after incubation and 35S-labelled macromolecules were detected in the cartilage tissue by autoradiography.

Keloids - a frustrating hurdle in wound healing.

A balance between collagen formation and degradation is essential for normal wound healing. Inadequate wound healing results in wound breakdown, and exaggeration results in hypertrophic scars and keloids. We look at the aetiological factors, the biochemical alterations and the treatment modalities for keloids, in this clinical challenge.

From frustration to red fury: a description of work-related anger in male registered nurses.

This article is Part II of a three part article. Part I described work-related anger experiences of female registered nurses, and in this article findings from a companion study of male RNs are presented. In phenomenological interviews, male nurses describe their work environment as hostile, causing them to be on the defensive and less productive. Sources of angle included attacks from physicians, coworkers, and managers; lack of assistance and support from peers; and differential treatment based on gender. The men stated they were called upon for physical tasks rather than for their nursing knowledge. Severed relationships and feelings of guilt, powerlessness, isolation, humiliation, and incompetence were concomitant with, or consequences of, anger. Part III provides recommendations for channeling anger constructively.

Curving and frustrating flatland.

Two polymer chains that occupy equal volumes when covalently linked together at one end self-assemble into an alternating lamellar morphology that has a characteristic period dictated by the molecular weight. When such copolymers are confined within alumina membranes that have cylindrical pores with diameters comparable to the repeat period, the interaction of the blocks with the confining walls and the imposed curvature induces a morphological transformation to relieve the constraints. Here, we show a lamella-to-toroid transition, captured through the dissolution of the surrounding membrane.

A genetic constitution frustrating the sexual drive in Drosophila paulistorum.

Hybrids obtained in the laboratory between two subspecies of Drosophila paulistorum possess a genetic constitution which is discordant enough so that the hybrid females repel the courtship of all males, and will mate with none. The hybrid males will court and will be rejected by almost all females, including their own hybrid siblings.
