CT in patients with scirrhous carcinoma of the GI tract: imaging findings and value for tumor detection and staging.

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to analyze the CT features of scirrhous carcinoma of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and to assess the usefulness of CT in detecting and staging these lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective evaluation of 31 proven cases of scirrhous carcinoma (linitis plastica) of the GI tract imaged in our institution from 1986 to 1994. Twenty-two patients had primary gastric carcinoma, and nine had carcinoma of the colon (rectosigmoid in eight and right colon in one). CT examinations were reviewed and correlated with pathologic and/or surgical findings in all patients and with barium examinations in 19 cases. A modified Dukes classification was used to stage these lesions without knowledge of the pathologic and surgical results. RESULTS: Four gastric lesions were missed during the initial CT examination. Seventeen patients had extensive circumferential lesions, and five had focal plaquelike lesions. The wall thickness ranged from 1 to 3 cm (mean, 1.8 cm). Homogeneous enhancement was seen in 17 patients, slightly heterogeneous enhancement was seen in one, a target configuration was present in two patients, and intramural calcification was present in one patient. All colonic lesions were circumferential, homogeneously enhancing with a wall thickness ranging from 1 to 3 cm (mean, 2 cm). CT scans showed limitations in evaluating local parameters. Compared with surgical and pathologic staging, CT correctly staged 26 patients, understaged four patients, and overstaged one patient. Among the 19 patients with pathologically proven stage D lesions (61%), CT correctly staged 17 patients (89%) and had a 100% positive predictive value. One case of hepatic metastases, 13 cases of malignant ascites, and 11 cases of omental and peritoneal metastases were found. CONCLUSION: CT is an important complimentary imaging technique to detect scirrhous carcinoma. The sensitivity of detection depends on the size of the lesion and the quality of the examination. CT has limitations in staging early lesions but shows a high sensitivity (89%) in detecting Dukes stage D lesions. Accurate CT staging in these individuals (61% in this series) allows a more adequate treatment strategy and avoids unnecessary exploratory laparotomies.

Comparison of time-efficient CT colonography with two- and three-dimensional colonic evaluation for detecting colorectal polyps.

OBJECTIVE: We compared the findings of time-efficient CT colonography with complete two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) CT colonography and conventional colonoscopy in detecting colorectal polyps. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-two patients undergoing colonoscopy screening were examined with CT colonography before endoscopy. Data were examined following one of two methods. In method 1, axial 2D data sets were examined in a cine mode. If findings were suggestive of abnormality, focal areas were examined with 3D CT colonography. In method 2, data sets were examined exactly as in method 1, and subsequent to that review, data sets were examined with simultaneous 3D "fly-through" CT colonography (surface-rendered images) and multiplanar reformatted images. The time required to examine CT colonography using each technique was recorded and abnormal findings were documented. Results of methods 1 and 2 were compared with findings on colonoscopy. RESULTS: Colonoscopy detected 16 polyps in 13 patients (polyp size, 2-10 mm). Ten polyps measured 5 mm or less, five measured between 6 and 9 mm, and one measured 10 mm or more. Using method 1, two of 10 polyps measuring less than 5 mm, three of five polyps measuring between 6 and 9 mm, and one polyp measuring 10 mm were detected. We noted no false-positive polyps. Average evaluation time was 16 min. With method 2, the same polyps were seen as with method 1. No additional polyps were detected, and the average evaluation time was 40 min. CONCLUSION: Axial 2D CT colonography can be performed quickly and is comparable with complete 2D and 3D CT colonography in detecting colorectal polyps.

[Accuracy and clinical applicability of the echocardiographic automated endocardial boundary detection system: correlation and bias analysis].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Automated edge detection of endocardial borders is a new echo system that permits on-line delineation and tracking of blood-tissue interface and offers promise for measuring cyclic changes in cavity area and the assessment of left ventricular function on-line. Its accuracy has only been analyzed by linear regression and its applicability in unselected patients is not clearly established. METHODS: We analyzed the accuracy and clinical applicability of the system in 150 patients. Its accuracy was assessed not only by linear regression but also by bias analysis by comparing the results of the system with those obtained by manual tracing from parasternal short-axis and apical 4 chamber views. RESULTS: We obtained satisfactory studies with this system in at least one of the two echo views in 66% of patients: 47% from 4-chambers view, 43% from parasternal short-axis view and 24.6% from both echo views. A visual semiquantitative assessment of left ventricular function could be performed in 88.6% of patients (p < 0.001). On-line and hand-traced left ventricular areas there well correlated, but fractional area change values from both methods correlated less closely. 95% limits of agreement between both methods were: 2.8 +/- 5.5 cm2 (end-diastolic area), 1 +/- 4.4 cm2 (end-systolic area) and 1.2 +/- 23% (fractional area change) in short-axis parasternal view; in apical 4-chambers view these limits were: 1.16 +/- 6.4 cm2,--1.1 +/- 6 cm2 and 7.3 +/- 16%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Although the correlations between left ventricular areas from both methods were close the limits of agreement exceeded our acceptable range of reproducibility. Fractional area change showed only moderate correlations and a lack of agreement with off-line method. Poor image quality of the conventional echo still limits the clinical applicability of the current automated edge detection system.

HIV p24 antigen concentration in serum of 11 anti-HIV 1-positive patients before and after immune-complex dissociation: a study of a 5-year period.

BACKGROUND: Determination of the p24 antigen of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV 1) is widely used to monitor viral activity though it is well known that substructures with p24 specificity present in serum can be complexed with specific antibodies, thereby preventing them from being detected by regular p24 antigen detection assays. OBJECTIVES: To compare the regular assay for p24 antigen with a procedure that dissociates immune-complexes before determination of this antigen. STUDY DESIGN: Eleven HIV 1-infected patients were followed for up to 5 years in order to obtain continuity in terms of the development of the p24 antigen in comparison with other surrogate markers. RESULTS: The results show that even low concentrations of anti-p24 antibodies are able to complex p24 antigens, rendering them undetectable in the routine assay. p24 antigens became detectable only after dissociation of these immune complexes by acid treatment procedure. In most patients viral activity became demonstrable only after application of the dissociation procedure.

Active electrolocation of objects in weakly electric fish

Weakly electric fish produce electric signals (electric organ discharges, EODs) with a specialised electric organ creating an electric field around their body. Objects within this field alter the EOD-induced current at epidermal electroreceptor organs, which are distributed over almost the entire body surface. The detection, localisation and analysis of objects performed by monitoring self-produced electric signals is called active electrolocation. Electric fish employ active electrolocation to detect objects that are less than 12 cm away and have electric properties that are different from those of the surrounding water. Within this range, the mormyrid Gnathonemus petersii can also perceive the distance of objects. Depth perception is independent of object parameters such as size, shape and material. The mechanism for distance determination through electrolocation involves calculating the ratio between two parameters of the electric image that the object projects onto the fish's skin. Electric fish can not only locate objects but can also analyse their electrical properties. Fish are informed about object impedance by measuring local amplitude changes at their receptor organs evoked by an object. In addition, all electric fish studied so far can independently determine the capacitative and resistive components of objects that possess complex impedances. This ability allows the fish to discriminate between living and non-living matter, because capacitance is a property of living organisms. African mormyrids and South American gymnotiforms use different mechanisms for capacitance detection. Mormyrids detect capacitance-evoked EOD waveform distortions, whereas gymnotiforms perform time measurements. Gymnotiforms measure the temporal phase shift of their EODs induced at body parts close to the object relative to unaffected body parts further away.

[Detection of minimal residual disease in acute leukemias by flow cytometry].

Detection of minimal residual disease in acute leukemias by flow cytometry has become an interesting tool for the analysis of minimal residual disease in acute leukemias. Some complementary studies can be used for this purpose such as conventional cytogenetics, FISH and molecular biology (PCR and Southern Blot). Flow cytometry study can detect smoldering blast cells in patients with acute leukemias who appear to be in complete remission by conventional morphologic criteria (< 5% of blast cells in bone marrow aspirate sample). This method can recognize 1 blast in 10(-4) mononuclear bone marrow cells considering the characteristics of immunophenotype at diagnosis (aberrant, asynchronous and overexpressed phenotypes) or using the analysis cell maturation to identify normal and abnormal patterns. These differences can be distinguished when the cells occupy the 'empty spaces' where no normal cells are evident. The principal objective of detecting low levels of tumor cells is to obtain more information about the efficacy of the treatment in order to: 1) design adapted post-remission protocols for high risk patients, 2) predict relapses previous to the clinical manifestations, 3) study the quality of stem cells harvested for autologous bone marrow transplantation.

Acetyl-L-carnitine vs tamoxifen in the oral therapy of Peyronie's disease: a preliminary report.

OBJECTIVE: To detect whether oral acetyl-L-carnitine might be useful in the acute and early chronic phases of Peyronie's disease, compared with tamoxifen, a drug currently in use. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 48 patients with Peyronie's disease (15 acute and 33 initial chronic), randomized equally into two groups. The first group used tamoxifen 20 mg twice daily for 3 months and the second acetyl-L-carnitine 1 g twice daily for 3 months. The disease and stages were diagnosed and identified using a history, objective examination, pharmacologically induced erection, autophotography during erection, and basic and dynamic colour Doppler ultrasonography. Penile curvature, plaque size, pain and disease progression were assessed. The differences between the groups or between the variables before and after therapy were compared using analysis of variance or the chi-squared test. RESULTS: Acetyl-L-carnitine was significantly more effective than tamoxifen in reducing pain and in inhibiting disease progression. Acetyl-L-carnitine reduced penile curvature significantly, while tamoxifen did not; both drugs significantly reduced plaque size. Tamoxifen induced significantly more side-effects than acetyl-L-carnitine. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that acetyl-L-carnitine is significantly more effective and safe than tamoxifen in the therapy of acute and early chronic Peyronie's disease.

Utility and barriers to performance of the ankle-brachial index in primary care practice.

Peripheral arterial disease is prevalent, associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and is underdiagnosed. Nevertheless, systematic efforts to provide early office-based peripheral arterial disease detection are not routinely implemented in office practice. The PARTNERS Program implemented the ankle-brachial index (ABI) measurement in primary care outpatient clinics in order to model practical dissemination of this technique and thus improve office-based peripheral arterial disease detection. The objective of this study was to identify clinician-defined factors that were perceived to foster acceptance of, or create barriers to, the use of the ABI in office practice. The ABI Utilization Survey was administered to primary care clinicians who participated in the PARTNERS Program, as well as to additional primary care clinicians who participated in the PARTNERS Preceptorship. The survey assessed six parameters: pre- and post-participation office ABI utilization; perceived clinical utility of the ABI; perceived value of the ABI data relative to other commonly used office disease detection methods; feasibility of implementing office-based ABI testing; definition of factors limiting utilization of the ABI in office practice; and the role of office staff in performing the ABI test. Survey data were obtained from 886 respondents. A total of 68% of respondents did not measure the ABI prior to participation in the PARTNERS Program. After Program participation, the frequency of office ABI use increased from 12% to 43% weekly and 13% to 39% monthly. The few participants who reported using the ABI only once a year (annually) did not significantly change after the program. Most clinicians believed that the ABI was useful in the diagnosis and management of both symptomatic (96%) and asymptomatic (89%) peripheral arterial disease. Moderate to major barriers to use of the ABI included time constraints (56%), lack of reimbursement (45%), and staff availability (45%). Nearly all (88%) clinicians believed that it was feasible to incorporate ABI into daily practice. Overall, most clinicians (57-75%) believed that ABI was equal to, or more useful, than other widely available and reimbursed screening tests in preserving their patients' health. In conclusion, the ABI was perceived by primary care clinicians to be a clinically useful diagnostic test. Limited reimbursement and time were identified as the primary barriers to its widespread use. Once learned, most clinicians stated that the ABI would continue to be frequently used in their office practice. The ABI is a simple peripheral arterial disease detection tool that can be successfully applied in primary care office practices.

Clinical laboratory evaluation of a PCR assay for the detection of HCMV.

OBJECTIVE: In limited laboratory space and consonant with limited opportunities for contamination, to implement and incorporate into our diagnostic virology laboratory, a polymerase chain reaction assay for human cytomegalovirus detection with maximum sensitivity. DESIGN: Polymerase chain reaction, adapted for use with the enzyme uracil-n-glycosylase to avoid the potential for false positive reactions due to amplicon carryover was developed, optimized using two primer pairs, and performed on 361 specimens, i.e., body fluids and tissues submitted to the viral laboratory for detection of human cytomegalovirus. Polymerase chain reaction results were compared to shell vial assay. SETTING: Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Shreveport LA. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Using the shell vial assay as the reference, analytical sensitivity (lower limit of detection) as well as laboratory sensitivity and specificity of both primer pairs. RESULTS: The lower limit of detection of our polymerase chain reaction assay was determined to be one focus-forming unit. Using the shell vial assay as the reference test, the sensitivity and specificity of both primer pairs were 96.5% and 94.3%, respectively. Polymerase chain reaction detected human cytomegalovirus in 6% of our culture-negative specimens. CONCLUSION: Based upon this study, our recommendations include the following: 1) a housekeeping gene amplification control is required for diagnostic polymerase chain reaction; 2) a single primer pair can be utilized for clinical work without sacrificing too much sensitivity; and 3) the laboratory should maintain close contact with clinicians to discuss polymerase chain reaction interpretation.

Nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor phenotypic hypersusceptibility can be demonstrated in different assays.

BACKGROUND: HIV-1 isolates harboring multiple nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) resistance mutations are more susceptible ("hypersusceptible") to the nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) than isolates lacking NRTI resistance mutations, but this has only been reported with a single-cycle replication phenotypic assay. In fact, there was a report that a commercial multicycle assay did not readily detect hypersusceptibility. OBJECTIVE: To see whether NNRTI hypersusceptibility can be demonstrated in other types of phenotypic assays, including multicycle assays and enzyme inhibition assays. METHODS: The susceptibility of HIV-1 clones derived from different patients in multicycle assays was tested in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and in an established cell line. In addition, the reverse transcriptase (RT) of many of these clones was expressed and their susceptibility tested in an RT inhibition assay. Nevirapine and efavirenz susceptibilities were tested and compared with a control wild-type virus or RT. RESULTS: Hypersusceptibility to nevirapine and efavirenz was detected using each of the methods described above. R values correlating the other methods with single-cycle assay values were between 0.66 and 0.96. In addition to the high correlations, the different methods gave similar numeric results. CONCLUSIONS: NNRTI hypersusceptibility is readily seen in multicycle susceptibility assays and in enzyme inhibition assays.

A dynamic conditional random field model for foreground and shadow segmentation.

This paper proposes a dynamic conditional random field (DCRF) model for foreground object and moving shadow segmentation in indoor video scenes. Given an image sequence, temporal dependencies of consecutive segmentation fields and spatial dependencies within each segmentation field are unified by a dynamic probabilistic framework based on the conditional random field (CRF). An efficient approximate filtering algorithm is derived for the DCRF model to recursively estimate the segmentation field from the history of observed images. The foreground and shadow segmentation method integrates both intensity and gradient features. Moreover, models of background, shadow, and gradient information are updated adaptively for nonstationary background processes. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can accurately detect moving objects and their cast shadows even in monocular grayscale video sequences.

[Secretory function of the salivary gland in patients with taste disorders--correlations between zinc deficiency and secretory functions of the salivary glands].

Not a few patients with taste disorders complain of xerostomia as another subjective symptom. When zinc is subscribed, the xerostomia is often reduced in conjunction with the taste disorders. In this study, therefore, a trial was made to detect xerostomia objectively by determining the function of salivary glandular secretion, and then relationship between zinc deficiency and the xerostomia was examined. Ninety three patients who complained of hypogeusia and/or xerostomia, 27 males and 66 females ranging from 39 to 87 years of age, were subjected to dynamic salivary scintigraphy using 99mTc-pertechnetate. Control data were obtained from 60 patients with unilateral acute peripheral facial palsy. The conclusions obtained were as follows: 1. The normal range of the salivary glandular secretory ratio (S.G.S.R.) was determined from the dynamic salivary scintigraphy using 99mTc-pertechnetate. 2. The xerostomia appeared to be detectable by the above method. 3. Dysfunctional salivary glandular secretion seemed to be associated with abnormal morphology of the papillae of the tongue. 4. No significant relation was found between the severity of taste disorders and the values of S.G.S.R. 5. In terms of the mean value, low values of S.G.S.R. were observed to coincide with zinc deficiency. 6. From the results of zinc treatment, we demonstrated correlations between taste disorders and xerostomia, both of which are among the symptoms of zinc deficiency.

Local connected fractal dimensions and lacunarity analyses of 60 degrees fluorescein angiograms.

PURPOSE: The retinal vascular tree exhibits fractal characteristics. These findings relate to the mechanisms involved in the vascularization process and to the objective morphologic characterization of retinal vessels using fractal analysis. Although normal retinas show uniform patterns of blood vessels, in pathologic retinas with central vein or artery occlusions, the patterns are irregular. Because the generalized box fractal dimension fails to differentiate successfully between normal and abnormal retinal vessels in 60 degrees fluorescein angiograms, the authors have further investigated this problem using the local connected fractal dimension (alpha). METHODS: The authors studied 24 digitized 60 degrees fluorescein angiograms of patients with normal retinas and 5 angiograms of patients with central retinal vein or artery occlusion. The pointwise method estimated the local complexity of the angiogram within a finite window centered on those pixels that belong to the retinal vessels. Color-coded dimensional images of the angiograms were constructed by plotting the pixels forming the object with a color that corresponded to specific values of alpha +/- delta alpha. RESULTS: The color-coded representation allowed recognition of areas with increased or decreased local angiogram complexity. The alpha distributions showed differences between normal and pathologic retinas, which overcomes problems encountered when using the methods of calculating the generalized fractal dimensions. A multivariate linear discriminant function using parameters from the alpha distribution and a further fractal parameter--lacunarity--reclassified 23 of the 24 normal and 4 of the 5 pathologic angiograms in their original groups (total: 92.1% correct). CONCLUSIONS: This methodology may be used for automatic detection and objective characterization of local retinal vessel abnormalities.

Genomic characterisation of ST233 Pseudomonas aeruginosa co-producing KPC-2 and VIM-2 in Northeastern Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence of independent horizontal acquisition events.

BACKGROUND: Dual-carbapenemase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa poses a major therapeutic and epidemiological challenge worldwide, yet systematic data on KPC and VIM co-production in Brazil remain limited. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified antimicrobial use, a period temporally associated with increased carbapenemase detection globally. OBJECTIVES: To characterise the molecular epidemiology and resistance profiles of KPC and VIM co-producing P. aeruginosa isolates from Brazil (2019-2023). METHODS: Between 2019 and 2023, 1489 multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates were screened by multiplex PCR for carbapenemase-encoding genes. Co-producing isolates underwent pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) for clonal profiling, followed by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) for high-resolution phylogenomic analysis. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and plasmid characterisation using next-generation sequencing platforms were also performed. RESULTS: Forty-two isolates (2.8%) harboured both blaKPC-2 and blaVIM-2, with detection occurring exclusively between 2020 and 2023, temporally coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. PFGE identified eight distinct clonal groups, providing evidence for independent horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events, whilst WGS confirmed all isolates as the high-risk ST233 lineage. Chromosomally integrated blaVIM-2 within class 1 integrons predominated; 2 isolates carried dual chromosomal copies. Plasmid-borne blaKPC-2 was identified across heterogeneous replicons (43.3-430.1 kb), suggesting multiple independent acquisition events. All co-producing isolates displayed extensive drug resistance, retaining in vitro susceptibility only to cefiderocol and colistin. CONCLUSIONS: ST233 co-producing KPC and VIM, represents a high-risk resistance phenotype of epidemiological significance. Divergent genomic architectures suggest active horizontal dissemination across diverse genetic backgrounds rather than clonal expansion, highlighting the need for enhanced surveillance and infection control strategies.

Rapid diagnosis of vaginal carriage of group B beta haemolytic streptococcus by an enrichment cum antigen detection test.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Group B beta haemolytic streptococcus (GBS) is a frequent colonizer of the maternal genital tract causing peripartum fever, puerperal sepsis, neonatal sepsis and neonatal meningitis. The conventional methods for detection of maternal colonization take 24-48 h. We made an attempt to standardize a rapid enrichment cum antigen detection test to screen pregnant women for GBS colonization in less than 8 h, so as to enable early institution of measures to prevent neonatal sepsis. METHODS: Vaginal swabs of 100 women >36 wk of gestation were inoculated onto enrichment broth (Todd Hewitt broth with lysed horse blood and antibiotics). After incubation for 1,2,4,6, and 18 h, the broth was cultured on sheep blood agar. In culture positive cases, the enrichment broth was subjected to antigen detection by latex agglutination test (LAT). For further evaluation of the rapid test, another group of 100 pregnant women were screened for GBS carriage by 6 h enrichment broth culture followed by antigen detection test. RESULTS: Five of the first group yielded GBS on culture and all were positive for GBS antigen after 6 h enrichment. Thirteen of the second group were positive for the antigen, but GBS could be isolated in ten only. This enrichment cum antigen detection test showed sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of 100, 98.4, 83.3 and 100 per cent respectively and could detect as few as 10(3) cfu/ml organisms. Maternal vaginal carriage of GBS was 7.5 per cent (15/200). INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: Six hours of enrichment followed by antigen detection proved to be a rapid and reliable method for detection of GBS colonization. This test is easy to perform making it an ideal test for screening GBS vaginal colonization at labour and starting chemoprophylaxis, where indicated on the same day, before the woman is discharged.

Determinants of parental decision to abort or continue after non-aneuploid ultrasound-detected fetal abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated factors influencing the decision to abort after abnormalities in the karyotypically normal fetus were found through ultrasonography. METHODS: We reviewed all pregnancies complicated by ultrasound-detected abnormalities managed on our service from April 1990 through August 1991 (N = 262). Cases with associated karyotypic abnormalities were excluded (N = 35), as were cases diagnosed after the legal gestational age limit for abortion (N = 68). The remaining 159 cases were stratified into prognosis groups of "severe," "uncertain," and "mild." RESULTS: The prognostic severity of the ultrasound abnormality strongly correlated with the decision to abort (P less than .0001). Rates of termination were 0, 12, and 66% in the "mild," "uncertain," and "severe" groups, respectively. The patients' age, gravidity, and parity, and the fetal gestational age at diagnosis did not differ significantly between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: 1) In non-aneuploid pregnancies with an ultrasound diagnosis of fetal abnormality, the major predictor of the decision to abort was the severity of fetal prognosis. 2) The gestational age at diagnosis was not an important variable in the decision to abort for fetal structural abnormalities. 3) Parents who had fetuses with abnormalities associated with uncertain prognoses usually opted to continue the pregnancy. This appeared to be particularly true for defects that were potentially correctable in utero or by neonatal intervention (even if investigational).

[Analysis on tumor related gene expression profiles in benzene poisoning using cDNA microarray].

OBJECTIVE: To detect target genes for further study by way of analyzing the gene expression profiles of benzene poisoning by using cDNA microarray. METHODS: Peripheral mononuclear cells were isolated from seven patients with benzene poisoning of different degrees, and sevene age-and sex-matched normal subjects. Total RNA was extracted and purified, followed by revese transcription to cDNAs with concomitant incorporation of fluorescent dCTP (Cy3 or Cy5). The cDNAs were used as probes in microarray of 2780 cloned cDNA. Fluorescent signals were scanned to detect genes differentially expressed in patients and normal subjects. RESULTS: Among 7 pieces of cDNA microarray of 2780 tumour related genes, the expression of 16 genes, such as GRO1, TGFBR3, LYN ctc was upregulated, whereas the expression of 28 genes, such as FOSB, DJ-1, MCT-1 etc was down-regulated. CONCLUSION: Abnormal expression of tumour related genes of patients exposed to benzene suggests that they may be the key genes, which play important role in benzene-induced leucocythemia. cDNA microarray technique is useful to indicate the expression mode of benzene poisoning tumour related genes, and to find rapidly and effectively new research object and the way of gene therapy.
