[Verbal communication and behavior during meals of 5 hospitalized patients with Alzheimer's disease].

Five institutionalized patients with Alzheimer-type dementia were observed (video-recorded) during meals. The aim was to assess their meal behaviour and social interaction. The results showed that when the patients ate without the participation of staff, the two least demented patients became 'caregivers' in the group and helped the three most demented patients to eat. When two mental health nurses joined the group, the patients dropped their roles as helpers. The conversation in the group could be characterized as incomplete, with short sentences and a lot of breaks. Sixty-three per cent of all comprehensible utterances concerned food and eating and almost all conversation concerned the present.

Development of intraverbal behavior in mentally retarded individuals through transfer of stimulus control procedures: classification of verbal responses.

Intraverbal behavior, in which an antecedent verbal stimulus is followed by a verbal response that lacks point-to-point correspondence with that stimulus, is often lacking in mentally retarded individuals. The present studies examine the use of transfer of stimulus control procedures for developing one type of intraverbal responding (classification of verbal responses) in mentally retarded participants who employed manual signs as their primary mode of verbal communication. In Experiment 1, a delayed prompting procedure was used to transfer control from nonverbal stimuli (pictures) to verbal stimuli (signs). This procedure was modified so that transfer of stimulus control was effected without errors in Experiment 2. In Experiment 3, a delayed prompting procedure was employed to train intraverbal behavior that involved a conditional discrimination. In all cases, transfer of stimulus control procedures produced rapid and enduring improvement in participants' intraverbal responding.

The Cancode interaction analysis system in the oncological setting: reliability and validity of video and audio tape coding.

Cancode is a computerized interaction analysis system developed for cancer consultations. This paper assesses its reliability and validity, and compares the use of audio versus video tape; by assessing 30 consultations between an actor and 10 oncologists. Weighted Kappa inter- and intra-rater scores ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 and 0.58-1.0, respectively, and use of video tape did not alter verbal coding. Factor analysis of verbal codes revealed two factors, 'verbal control' and 'verbal support'. Verbal and non-verbal doctor behavior differed by patient type ('verbal support' P = 0.007, 'verbal control' P = 0.004, 'Responsiveness' P = 0.000, and 'Immediacy' P = 0.000). Inter-doctor variation was noted for 'verbal support' (P = 0.000) and 'Relaxation' (P = 0.000). 'Responsiveness' was negatively correlated with 'verbal support' (-0.58) and 'verbal control' (-0.65). Cancode is reliable, valid and sensitive to doctors behavioral changes. For a more passive patient, the doctor may switch from a 'cure' to 'care' oriented consult, responding to psycho-social instead of informational needs.

Theory of mind in children with autistic disorder: evidence of developmental progression and the role of verbal ability.

The present study investigated theory of mind in two groups of autistic children with markedly different verbal mental ages but comparable nonverbal ability and chronological ages, using a range of theory of mind belief tasks. The aims were to look for evidence of developmental progression of theory of mind ability in autistic children and to examine the role played by verbal ability in task performance. The results showed hierarchical patterns of performance across tasks, suggesting a developmental sequence of emerging aspects of theory of mind ability. There was clear evidence that verbal ability is an important contributor to successful task performance.

Verbal exchange structure of brief psychodynamic-interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy.

A verbal exchange is a set of 2 people's co-occurring speech-act categories that accomplish some subtask within an interpersonal encounter. Factor analysis of verbal response mode (speech act) frequencies in 1,630 segments (each approximately 10 to 12 min) drawn from the brief psychodynamic-interpersonal or cognitive-behavioral treatment of 39 mainly depressed clients identified 6 exchanges in each treatment--4 that were the same in both treatments (Revealing, Storytelling, Explaining, and Inquiring) and 2 that distinguished each treatment (Exploring and Interpreting in psychodynamic-interpersonal treatment; Prescribing and Reframing in cognitive-behavioral treatment). The exchanges showed distinctive temporal patterns across segments of sessions and across sessions of each time-limited treatment. The verbal exchange is a midsize concept that links atomistic verbal codes with clinical or theoretical concepts.
