Adenomas of the parathyroid gland, the majority of which are of the solitary chief cell type, are the most frequent cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Parathyroid adenomas composed predominantly or exclusively of oxyphil cells are rare and were previously considered nonfunctioning. Among 160 consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who were explored surgically, ten (6.25 per cent) had adenomas of the oxyphil cell variety. The eight women and two men in this series ranged in age from 28 to 82 years (average, 58 years). The tumors weighed from 0.2 to 4.0 g (average, 1.2 g). Nine of the adenomas were located in the left neck, while the remaining tumor was in the right neck. Histologically, the tumors were composed almost exclusively of transitional and typical oxyphil cells. A residual "capsular" parathyroid composed of chief cells was identified in each case. Electron microscopy, phosphotungstic acid-hematoxylin staining, and the immunoperoxidase technique for cytochrome c oxidase showed the presence of numerous mitochondria in oxyphil cells. All patients had normal serum calcium levels four months to four years (average, 23 months) after removal of the neoplasms.
For the most part, clear cell neoplasms of the salivary glands are adenocarcinomas of at least low-grade malignant potential. However, a rare benign clear cell tumor of major salivary glands can be distinguished as a histologic variant of oncocytoma and oncocytosis. Ten such cases have been identified in the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (Washington, DC). Eight patients were women, and nine of the lesions involved the parotid gland. All of the patients were middle-aged or older adults. The light-microscopic morphology and the phosphotungstic acid-hematoxylin (PTAH), PAS, and mucicarmine staining patterns were consistent with oncocytoma and oncocytosis. Transitions from typical eosinophilic oncocytes to clear cells were evident. Electron microscopy and histochemistry demonstrated that the clear cytoplasm seen by light microscopy was primarily due to artifact and intracytoplasmic glycogen. Mitochondria were the preponderant cytoplasmic organelles. Two patients were known to have experienced recurrent lesions.
A systematic histochemical analysis of the matrix composition of juxtaglomerular cell granules was carried out. The behaviour of kidney lysosomes under similar conditions has been examined in parallel. The tubular protein droplets produced by the i.p. administration of egg albumen were chosen as lysosome-model. Identical pattern of histochemical reactions has been demonstrated both in kidney lysosomes and juxtaglomerular granules indicating the presence of separate lipoprotein and glycoprotein components. The ammoniated silver carbonate method for lysosomes was also positive in juxtaglomerular cell granules. These results support on a non-enzymatic basis the concept that secretory granules and lysosomes are evolutionary homologues.

The cell morphology, the number of flagella, the occurrence of periplasmic fibrils and ultrastructural structures of five groups of cultured canine gastric Helicobacter spp. were compared. The study included four strains of Helicobacter felis, four strains of Helicobacter bizzozeronii, one strain of 'Flexispira', six strains of an unnamed spiral organism 2 and one strain of an unnamed spiral organism 3 which were isolated from gastric biopsies. Cultures were studied with negative staining, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Bacterial dimensions were measured from the negative staining samples and values were tested with ANOVA and Bonferroni tests. The organisms studied differed from each other morphologically. H. felis was a slightly spiraled organism with periplasmic fibrils. 'Flexispira' was a thin and straight organism with periplasmic fibrils. H. bizzozeronii was a tightly spiraled organism. Spiral organism 2 was loosely spiraled and thicker than the other organisms. Spiral organism 3 was a short curved rod having a single bipolar flagellum. The other species had multiple flagella. As a conclusion the canine gastric Helicobacter spp. can be differentiated from each other morphologically with an electron microscope. The morphological differences were mainly found in the structures involved in motility. The importance of the differences may lie in their impact on the colonization in a gastric mucous environment.
A case of infantile digital fibromatosis with an unusual onset is reported. A Japanese girl, with a simple syndactyly of the right ring and little fingers, had an operation at the age of 2 1/2 years. Three months after the operation, multiple nodules appeared at the skin graft edge. The nodules were excised but soon recurred. When the patient was 8 years old, a large-scale excision of the tumors was performed. Intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies were shown by phosphotungstic acid-hematoxylin stain, and the case was diagnosed as infantile digital fibromatosis.
The synaptic glomeruli of rat cerebellum was investigated at postnatal ages of 1 to 7, 9 and 15 days in an attempt to formulate a morphogenic analysis for synaptic junctional development, using the E-PTA stain for synapses. The synaptic junctions, which are composed of dense projection, intercleft density and postsynaptic band in synaptic glomeruli, were observed at a postnatal age of 6 days. Two types of synaptic junctions, symmetrical and asymmetrical, were recognized.
