Exner's Depression Index and the Harris-Lingoes MMPI-2 subscales for depression.

This study examined the relationship between scores on the Harris-Lingoes MMPI-2 subscales for Depression and the categories of Exner's Rorschach Depression Index (DEPI) for 53 clients of a counselling agency. Scores on the subscale Mental Dullness related to the Depression Index as a whole and to the category Blends < 4. The subscale Subjective Depression also related to the category Blends < 4.

Weight loss and psychopathology: a three-cluster MMPI typology.

The present study investigated the effects of a treatment, including diet, exercise, and psychoeducational groups, on the severity of the psychopathology of obese subjects. The 120 subjects (60 male and 60 female), aged 20 to 50 years, were hospitalised for about two months. The mean Body Mass Index (BMI) at the start was 40.9 (SD = 5.3) and at the end 34.3 (SD = 5.5). The MMPI and clinical interview were administered to the subjects. The aims of the study were to see if there was change between the beginning and the end of treatment and to individuate groups of subjects homogeneous for the severity of the psychopathology at the start of treatment and to relate the severity to changes, whether worsening or improving, at the end of treatment. A multivariate analysis of variance showed significant change in scores on the psychological variables after treatment. Cluster analysis divided the patients into three groups with different severity of psychopathology. There were significant decreases on Hypochondriasis, Depression, and Social Introversion. Scores of the subjects with the most severe psychopathological traits changed most.

Comparisons by sex of psychometric correlates of the MMPI-2 Depression Scale.

Scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 were correlated to identify which measures predicted depression among 219 women and 115 men. Despite prevalence data indicating that dysphoria is more common among females than males, sex did not predict MMPI-2 Depression scores in this sample. Masculine Gender Role was negatively predictive of depression for both sexes. High scores on Feminine Gender Role were slightly predictive of depression among men but not among women. An effective strategy for coping with depression involves managing stress causing circumstances as opposed to managing the feelings that result from stress. Persons of either sex who score high on Masculine Gender Role endorse traits that are compatible with the better strategy.

Statistical versus clinical significance in research with the MMPI.

Some of the contradictions in psychological research may be attributable to failure to distinguish statistical from clinical significance. 82 articles in which the MMPI was the research instrument were analyzed to see how often the results reported as significant were in fact large enough to warrant such a conclusion. Articles were classified as to whether or not the clinical interpretations were consistent with the statistical results. Excluding articles in which data were insufficient to reach an independent conclusion, 54.90% of the articles presented conclusions of clinical significance that were not supported by the data, while 45.10% reported clinical results that were supported by the data.

Correlates of the MMPI-2 anger content scale.

Scores on the MMPI-2 anger-content scale were correlated with those on Spielberger's anger expression scale, Zelin, et al.'s anger self-report scale, and the Cook and Medley hostility scale. Subjects were 32 men and 33 women in college. As expected, the anger-content scale correlated significantly with measures of anger awareness, anger expression (anger out versus anger in), and negatively with anger control. There was also a significant correlation with measures of hostility (projection of anger) for men.

MMPI profiles of veterans of WWII and Korea: comparisons of former POWs and combat survivors.

MMPI profile patterns were compared between combat veteran groups of 168 POW survivors and 67 servicemen who were not war captives in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Results confirm previous reports that the scales, Hypochondriasis (Hs), Depression (D), and Hysteria (Hy), are characteristically elevated among former POWs. Findings also point to the contribution of scales, Psychasthenia (Pt), Paranoia (Pa), and Ego Strength (Es), in differentiating groups, suggesting that negative ruminations, heightened anxiety, interpersonal anger and suspiciousness, and low self-esteem contribute significantly to group differentiation.

MMPI experimental scale correlates of the MAACL--R with male alcoholics.

Concurrent and discriminative validity of the MAACL--R scales were studied by means of correlations with selected MMPI experimental scales (AR, DR, HOS, Poor Morale, and ES) for a sample of 88 male VA alcoholics. Concurrent validity of Anxiety, Depression, Hostility and PASS, and discriminative validity of the Anxiety scale were confirmed.

The use of the MMPI-2 in conjunction with the NEO-Personality Inventory.

The combined use of the MMPI-2 Basic and Content Scales and NEO-Personality Inventory has produced data that describe the interplay of psychiatric disorders and personality traits. Diagnostic and clinical implications include the patient's coping style, flexibility, motivation, organization, and compliance in treatment.

MMPI Scale 9 changes in incarcerated felons.

This article focuses on the scores of incarcerated male felons on the MMPI clinical subscales 4 and 9 because they are the most frequently elevated for this type of population. Over time, while scores on Scale 4 remained consistent, those on Scale 9 declined significantly. That inmates might become depressed, as a result of the foibles of incarceration, is discussed.

Cluster analysis of MMPI scales of patients involuntarily committed for chemical dependency treatment.

This study investigated empirical clusters of MMPI scale T scores for 186 men and 112 women involuntarily committed to a chemical dependency unit of a state psychiatric hospital. Ward's method of cluster analysis produced six clusters which were similar to those reported in other cluster-analytic studies of alcoholics but with a prominent increase in Scale 6 elevations. Average profiles for the six clusters were Spike 6, 6-2-8-4, within normal limits (Clusters 3 and 4), and 2-6-8-3-4-1-9. Results are discussed in terms of treatment planning for this population.

Validity of the MMPI-2 Depression content scale with psychiatric inpatients.

The concurrent and construct validity of the MMPI-2 Depression content scale was examined for a group of 62 psychiatric inpatients. Correlation coefficients with other measures of depression, hopelessness, low self-esteem, and suicide ideation ranged from .58 to .66 and were statistically significant. Also, the Depression content scale successfully differentiated patients according to psychiatric diagnosis (depressed versus nondepressed) and assessed suicide risk (at risk versus not at risk). Thus, the concurrent and construct validities of the scale were supported.

Correlates of hopelessness on the MMPI-2.

The relationships between hopelessness, as measured by Beck's Hopelessness Scale, and scales of the MMPI-2 were assessed. Hopelessness was correlated with scores that measured depression, low self-esteem, emotional or self-alienation, lack of ego mastery, and negative treatment indications. Stepwise multiple regression indicated that subjective depression and negative treatment indicators accounted for 41% of variance in hopelessness. Implications were discussed.

Does the MMPI PTSD-PK scale measure robustness?

Research evaluating the diagnostic value of the MMPI PK scale for determining Posttraumatic Stress Disorder has been consistently positive. Various cut-off points have been suggested, depending on the population studied. The current study, involving a select group of police candidates from middle-sized midwestern towns, suggests that low PK scores may represent robustness. These subjects as a group made low use of health and mental health services and obtained very low PK scores (T = 41), although they made average scores on the clinical scales.

Adult psychopathology on the MMPI and dysfunctional families of origin.

Adults who were raised in dysfunctional families demonstrate psychopathology on the MMPI. 396 (140 men, 256 women) adult clients (mean age = 35 yr.) from dysfunctional families who were seeking treatment at a university counseling center were administered the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Analysis showed significantly elevated scores on F, Total Pathology, Depression, Psychopathic Deviance, Psychasthenia, Schizophrenia, and Social Introversion scales by these subjects from families with a history of physical, sexual, emotional abuse, or alcoholism. This study contributes to the growing body of empirical research on the relationship between dysfunctional families of origin and adult psychopathology.

Mean MMPI profile of referrals to a shyness clinic.

Shyness occurs in over 48% of the population, becoming disabling in 13% or more. Clinical observation suggests that individuals seeking treatment for shyness are in significantly greater distress than the general population, showing greater depression, generalized anxiety, social avoidance, interpersonal sensitivity, and shame, than is indicated by earlier studies. We gave the MMPI to 25 men and 20 women referred for problems with shyness to assess our observations. Analysis confirmed the hypotheses. Men scored higher than women in a slightly different profile configuration.
