The immunogenecity of a transplantable carcinoma, which has spontaneously developed from embryonal colonic tissues, ectopically transplanted into adult syngeneic mice, was investigated. Three methods were employed to check the immunogenicity of the tumor: 1) transplantation and subsequent surgical removal of the tumor; 2) injection of irradiated tumor cells, the effect of immunization in both cases was detected by the decreased weight of tumors, repeatedly transplanted into the immunized animals; 3) mice were immunized according to the 2nd method, the effect of the immunization was defined by calculating the number of tumors, arisen in lungs of mice injected i. v. tumoral cells. The 3rd method was found to be mostly sensitive. Significant differences in the immunogenicity of different passages of carcinoma were noted. An antigenic similarity of adenocarcinoma concerned and colonic sarcoma developed under identical conditions was revealed.

1.5 g/day of FT-207 suppository was administered for two weeks prior to operation to twenty patients with large bowel carcinoma of familiar poliposis coli. The level of FT-207 and 5-FU in serum, lymph node, tumor and normal colonic mucosa were determined by bioassay. The levels of FT-207 in the rectum, sigmoid colon and tumor were higher than that in serum. The levels of 5-FU in the rectum, sigmoid colon, tumor and lymph node were also higher than that in serum. The levels of FT-207 and 5-FU in carcinoma of the rectum was higher than those in serum. Compared with the level in normal rectal mucosa, only the level of 5-FU in rectal carcinoma was higher. From the histological point of view, the highest levels of FT-207 and 5-FU was observed in well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. There was no side effect experienced in our series, therefore, FT-207 suppository seems to be one of the safe promising preoperative chemotherapies.

Excretion was studied of catecholamines and diphenilamine (DOPA) in 310 patients with carcinoma of the stomach and large intestine and 43 patients with non-malignant diseases. The oncological patients showed decrease in activity of the mediator link of the sympathoadrenal system (SAS) as well as its reserves but there was no association with sex, age, location or histological structure. Three types of SAS functioning were identified, such as compensation, overstrain and emaciation. Surgical intervention led to activation of the hormonal link and exhaustion of the system's reserves. Two kinds of sympathoadrenal response to stress were described--adequate and inadequate. In the former type, phases of stress remain as they are, unchanged, as are time periods of formation thereof, while under the latter one time periods of the phases formation or formation thereof get disordered.
The authors report the case of 60 year old man with multiple jeuno-ileal metastases from a malignant melanoma of the skin revealed by jejuno-jejunal intussusceptions. In the light of this case, the authors emphasize the frequency and preferential localisation of these metastases at the level of the jejunum and ileum, the usual mildness of their symptoms until the day where acute obstruction requires laparotomy. The multiple lesions, their diversity and their very rapid course.

AIM: To study the usefulness and safety of capsule endoscopy as a diagnostic tool in various small bowel disorders. DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of a series of cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between August 2001 and August 2002, 92 capsule endoscopy procedures were performed in 88 patients (53M/39F, age: 43.87 +/- 16.78). Indications included: chronic diarrhea (n=33); unknown abdominal pain (n=29); occult gastrointestinal bleeding or iron-deficiency anemia (n=13); abdominal discomfort in NSAID takers (n=7); staging of gastrointestinal tumors (n=4), and asymptomatic controls (n=2). Previously performed gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and small-bowel follow-through were not conclusive in all patients. RESULTS: Most frequently relevant findings included: jejuno-ileal aphtas and ulcerations (29 patients), vascular malformations (13 patients), and intestinal neoplasm (6 patients). The groups with a higher rate of findings related to this indication were occult gastrointestinal bleeding (76.92%) and chronic diarrhea (67.85%), with the lowest rate in the abdominal pain group (34.48%). Therapeutic strategy was directly changed in 36 of 88 patients (40.90%) because of capsule-endoscopic findings. The only observed complication was the failed excretion of one of the capsules because of an unknown ulcerated intestinal stricture. CONCLUSIONS: Capsule endoscopy is a safe procedure which can study the entire small bowel, meaning a valuable tool for the management of patients with suggestive signs and symptoms of intestinal disorders.

As with cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, genetic disruption of COX-1 gene or pharmacologic inhibition of its activity has been shown to decrease the number of intestinal polyps in Apc gene-deficient mice. The present study was designed to investigate the combined effects of COX-1 and COX-2 selective inhibitors on spontaneous polyp formation in APC1309 female mice. The animals were treated with 300 or 600 ppm mofezolac (a COX-1 selective inhibitor) alone, 200 or 400 ppm nimesulide (a COX-2 selective inhibitor) alone, 300 ppm mofezolac plus 200 ppm nimesulide, 600 ppm mofezolac plus 400 ppm nimesulide, or 10 ppm indomethacin (a dual-COX inhibitor) in the diet from 7 weeks of age for 4 weeks. Percentage inhibition of polyp area in the intestine was 17% with 600 ppm mofezolac alone and 25% with 400 ppm nimesulide alone, their sum of 42% being almost equal to the 37% observed for the combination treatment. Administration of 300 ppm mofezolac plus 200 ppm nimesulide also significantly decreased polyp area in the intestine by 30%. Moreover, the numbers of polyps more than 2.5 mm in diameter were markedly decreased by combined treatment of both COX inhibitors. With 10 ppm indomethacin, the dual inhibitor, polyp area was also clearly reduced by 46%. Our results indicate that COX-1 and COX-2 may to some extent contribute to polyp formation independently and inhibitor combination treatment thus has particular potential for chemoprevention of colon carcinogenesis.
