First-order transition in the spin dynamics of geometrically frustrated Yb2Ti2O7.

Using neutron diffraction, 170Yb Mössbauer and muon spin relaxation spectroscopies, we have examined the pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7, where the Yb3+S' = 1/2 ground state has planar anisotropy. Below approximately 0.24 K, the temperature of the known specific-heat lambda transition, there is no long range magnetic order. We show that the transition corresponds to a first-order change in the fluctuation rate of the Yb3+ spins. Above the transition temperature, the rate, in the GHz range, follows a thermal excitation law, whereas below, the rate, in the MHz range, is temperature independent, indicative of a quantum fluctuation regime.

Direct measurement of the spin Hamiltonian and observation of condensation of magnons in the 2D frustrated quantum magnet Cs2CuCl4.

We propose a method for measuring spin Hamiltonians and apply it to the spin- 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4, which shows a 2D fractionalized resonating valence bond state at low fields. By applying strong fields we fully align the spin moment of Cs2CuCl4, transforming it into an effective ferromagnet. In this phase the excitations are conventional magnons and their dispersion relation measured using neutron scattering give the exchange couplings directly, which are found to form an anisotropic triangular lattice with small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya terms. Using the field to control the excitations we observe Bose condensation of magnons into an ordered ground state.

Core level photoemission evidence of frustrated surface molecules: a germ of disorder at the (111) surface of C60 before the order-disorder surface phase transition.

Using high resolution core level photoemission, we investigated the disordering transition of the fullerene molecules at the (111) surface of C (60) films. The experimental evidence of a two-step mechanism for the rotational disordering of surface fullerene molecules is provided. The data are consistent with a recent model in which the rotational degrees of freedom of one molecule, out of the four inequivalent C (60) molecules of the low temperature (2x2) surface unit cell, melt about 100 K before the bulk phase transition.

Pairing of Cooper pairs in a fully frustrated Josephson-junction chain.

We study a one-dimensional Josephson-junction chain embedded in a magnetic field. We show that, when the magnetic flux per elementary loop equals half the superconducting flux quantum phi0 = h/2e, a local Z2 symmetry arises. This symmetry is responsible for a nematic Luttinger liquid state associated with bound states of Cooper pairs. We analyze the phase diagram and discuss some experimental possibilities to observe this exotic phase.

Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As: a frustrated ferromagnet.

Starting from a microscopic description of the exchange interaction in Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As, we derive an effective Mn-Mn interaction. Because of the strong spin-orbit coupling in the valence band, this effective interaction is highly anisotropic and has a spatial structure somewhat similar to dipolar interactions. The corresponding ground state has a finite magnetization but is intrinsically spin disordered even at zero temperature, explaining many features of the experimental data. Our results are relevant for many magnetic semiconductors.

Anomalous thermal conductivity of frustrated heisenberg spin chains and ladders.

We study the thermal transport properties of several quantum-spin chains and ladders. We find indications for a diverging thermal conductivity at finite temperatures for the models examined. The temperature at which the nondiverging prefactor kappa((th))(T) peaks is, in general, substantially lower than the temperature at which the corresponding specific heat c(V)(T) is maximal. We show that this result of the microscopic approach leads to a substantial reduction for estimates of the magnetic mean-free path lambda extracted by analyzing recent experiments, as compared to similar analyses by phenomenological theories.

Impact of frustrated singularities on magnetic island evolution.

The growth of magnetic islands is explored using the magnetohydrodynamic model in a simple slab system in which the value of the tearing mode stability parameter Delta' can be varied continuously. Unless the system is close to marginal stability reconnection is controlled by Sweet-Parker current layers, whose formation is a consequence of the inherent singular structure of magnetic island equilibria.

Ising transition driven by frustration in a 2D classical model with continuous symmetry.

We study the thermal properties of the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with both nearest (J1) and next-nearest (J2) exchange couplings on the square lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that, for J2/J1>1/2, thermal fluctuations give rise to an effective Z2 symmetry leading to a finite-temperature phase transition. We provide strong numerical evidence that this transition is in the 2D Ising universality class, and that T(c)-->0 with an infinite slope when J2/J1-->1/2.

Entanglement frustration for Gaussian states on symmetric graphs.

We investigate the entanglement properties of multimode Gaussian states, which have some symmetry with respect to the ordering of the modes. We show how the symmetry constrains the entanglement between two modes of the system. In particular, we determine the maximal entanglement of formation that can be achieved in symmetric graphs like chains, 2D and 3D lattices, mean field models and the platonic solids. The maximal entanglement is always attained for the ground state of a particular quadratic Hamiltonian. The latter thus yields the maximal entanglement among all quadratic Hamiltonians having the considered symmetry.

muSR study of the quantum dynamics in the frustrated S=3/2 kagomé bilayers.

We present muSR experiments in the S=3/2 kagomé bilayer compound Ba(2)Sn(2)ZnGa(10-7p)Cr(7p)O22 [BSZCGO(p)] and compare it to the isostructural SrCr(9p)Ga(12-9p)O19 [SCGO(p)], including for the latter new results for p > or =0.89. Quantum-dynamical low energy magnetic excitations are evidenced in this novel compound. We study the evolution of the muon relaxation rate with p, T, and field. A phenomenological model for the muon relaxation based on sporadic dynamics due to spin excitations in a singlet sea proposed by Uemura et al. is extended to all fields and T range. Its connection to the RVB picture is discussed, and we argue that such coherent states might mediate the interactions between "impurities" which induce the spin glass freezing.

Enhanced pairing in doped quantum magnets with frustrated hole motion.

Evidence for strong pairing at arbitrarily small J/t is provided in a t-J model on the checkerboard lattice for a specific sign of the hopping amplitude. Destructive quantum interferences suppress Nagaoka ferromagnetism when J/t-->0 and drastically reduce coherent hole motion in the fluctuating singlet background. It is shown that, by pairing in various orbital symmetry channels, holes can benefit from a large gain of kinetic energy.

Universal aspects of coulomb-frustrated phase separation.

We study the consequences of Coulomb interactions on a system undergoing a putative first order phase transition. In two dimensions (2D), near the critical density, the system is universally unstable to the formation of new intermediate phases, which we call "electronic microemulsion phases," which consist of an intermediate scale mixture of regions of the two competing phases. A corollary is that there can be no direct transition as a function of density from a 2D Wigner crystal to a uniform electron liquid. In 3D, if the strength of the Coulomb interactions exceeds a critical value, no phase separation occurs, while for the weaker Coulomb strength electronic microemulsions are inevitable. This tendency is considerably more pronounced in anisotropic (quasi-2D or quasi-1D) systems, where a devil's staircase of transitions is possible.

Spin-flop ordering from frustrated ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions: a combined theoretical and experimental study of a Mn/Fe(100) monolayer.

The occurrence of a noncollinear magnetic structure at a Mn monolayer grown epitaxially on Fe(100) is predicted theoretically, using spinor density-functional theory, and observed experimentally, using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and linear dichroism (XMLD) spectroscopies. The combined use of XMCD and XMLD at the Mn-absorption edge allows us to assess the existence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order at the interface, and also to determine the moment orientations with element specificity. The experimental results thus obtained are in excellent agreement with the magnetic structure determined theoretically.

Statics and dynamics of incommensurate spin order in a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet CdCr2O4.

Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering we show that a cubic spinel, CdCr2O4, undergoes an elongation along the c axis (c > a = b) at its spin-Peierls-like phase transition at T(N) = 7.8 K. The Néel phase (T < T(N)) has an incommensurate spin structure with a characteristic wave vector Q(M) = (0, delta,1) with delta approximately 0.09 and with spins lying on the ac plane. This is in stark contrast to another well-known Cr-based spinel, ZnCr2O4, that undergoes a c-axis contraction and a commensurate spin order. The magnetic excitation of the incommensurate Néel state has a weak anisotropy gap of 0.6 meV and it consists of at least three bands extending up to 5 meV.

Nematic order in square lattice frustrated ferromagnets.

We present a new scenario for the breakdown of ferromagnetic order in a two-dimensional quantum magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. In this, dynamical effects lead to the formation of two-magnon bound states, which undergo Bose-Einstein condensation, giving rise to bond-centered nematic order. This scenario is explored in some detail for an extended Heisenberg model on a square lattice. In particular, we present numerical evidence confirming the existence of a state with d-wave nematic correlations but no long-range magnetic order, lying between the saturated ferromagnetic and collinear antiferromagnetic phases of the ferromagnetic model J1-J2. We argue by continuity of spectra that this phase is also present in a model with 4-spin cyclic exchange.

Spontaneous formation of vanadium "molecules" in a geometrically frustrated crystal: AlV2O4.

We investigated the charge-ordered (CO) state in spinel AlV2O4 by electron diffraction, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and magnetic measurements. It was found that the CO structure appearing below 700 K is characterized by the formation of V clusters (heptamers), each of which is consisting of 7 vanadium atoms and is in a spin-singlet state as a total. Theoretical consideration indicates that this unique molecularlike V heptamer is stabilized by a strong bonding of vanadium t(2g) orbitals.
