Can benzodiazepines be classified by characterising their anticonvulsant tolerance-inducing potential?

The development of anticonvulsant tolerance with three benzodiazepines was assessed in mice using a slow intravenous infusion of pentylenetetrazol as the convulsive stimulus. Chlordiazepoxide (12.5 mg/kg b.d.) and midazolam (0.75 mg/kg b.d.) induced a slowly evolving tolerance over 15 days whereas nitrazepam (0.6 mg/kg b.d.) induced a very marked rapid tolerance which developed no further during 6 days treatment. Tolerance appeared to be incomplete with all three benzodiazepines. Possible explanations for the differences in tolerance profile are discussed and an alternative basis for the classification of benzodiazepines is suggested.

Classifying color materials: children are less holistic than adults.

Much recent research indicates that children respond to materials which are separable for adults as though those materials were integral. The present studies examined differences between 5-year-olds and adults in the processing of integral materials. In Study 1, both children and adults made a majority of similarity classifications for those materials. However, the children were found to make fewer of those integral similarity classifications and more dimensional classifications than adults for materials varying in the integral dimensions of chroma and value. In Study 2, children's similarity judgments were also indicative of greater separability of those dimensions. For both children and adults, similarity ratings given in Study 2 were predictive of classification behavior in Study 1. Age differences in similarity ratings were also predictive of age differences in classification. The overall pattern of results is consistent with the idea that children's perception is neither more nor less holistic than that of adults. Whether children or adults are found to be more holistic depends on the nature of the material presented. With integral materials, young children respond in a manner which appears less holistic than that of adults.

Condylar retruded contact position and intercuspal position in dentulous patients. Part II: Patients classified by anamnestic questionnaire.

General agreement was found among the 75 patients' responses to the anamnestic questionnaire compared with responses in similar epidemiologic studies. An SPO has been proposed as a method of describing condylar position in addition to the MLD and the index of intercuspal asymmetry (described in Part I). The index of asymmetry was statistically significant at the 0.01 level between the group of 38 patients without primary symptoms and the group of 37 patients with one or more primary symptoms and mandibular dysfunction. The SPO hypothesis that the symptom of noise from the TMJ was present outside the SPO and absent inside the SPO was statistically significant in the categories of primary symptoms, oral habits, and psychologic self-evaluation (p less than 0.01) but was not statistically significant in regard to questions of mandibular function and chronic pain. A composite order of symptoms, determined by the sum of their rankings in each of three condylar indexes, places noise from the TMJ, facial pain, ear pain, chewing pain, and TMJ pain symptoms at the top of the list. The right and left side least squares linear analysis of 38 dental patients without primary symptoms yielded a difference of 10 degrees whereas a greater spread of 69.2 degrees was found in the group of 37 dental patients with primary symptoms and patients with mandibular dysfunction. Patients seen because of mandibular dysfunction present condylar recordings outside the SPO with a high level of agreement and a mean index of intercuspal asymmetry of 1.29 mm (SD 0.570). The three-dimensional analysis of condylar position in RCP and intercuspal position offers an explanation of why the correlation of mandibular dysfunction and occlusion has been difficult to recognize.

Male rats classified as copulators and noncopulators respond differentially on the hot plate test.

Sexually naive male rats that fail to copulate with a sexually receptive female (noncopulators) have been shown to be less responsive to a variety of environmental stimuli in comparison to rats that do engage in copulation (copulators). In this experiment, it was found that noncopulators were less responsive than copulators to noxious thermal stimulation as determined by their latency to paw lick on a 50 degrees C hot plate. Pain sensitivity was not influenced in either noncopulators or copulators by exposure to a sexually receptive female. These results add to the list of differences between copulators and noncopulators.

Classifying nursing home patients; the impact of mid-week data collection on variance reduction.

This study analyzes the variance reduction capabilities of three existing nursing home patient classification systems across different shifts and sub-week time periods. The existing classification systems, all based on nursing time data collected in the middle of the working week, performed well with data collected at night and on weekends. Existing nursing home patient classification systems are robust for time periods other than those during which nursing times have usually been collected.

Spatial organization of neurochemically classified interneurons of the goldfish retina-I. Local patterns.

Certain interneurons in the goldfish retina are uniquely specifiable by their abilities to take up exogenously supplied [3H]gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), [3H]glycine, [3H]dopamine of [3H]serotonin al low micromolar concentrations. Each ligand labels one or two unique populations of interneurons yielding six cell types characterized by soma location, soma size, level and form of dendritic arborization, and local spatial patterning. This report summarizes these qualitative features and provides quantitative evidence on the size and spatial distributions of : (1) GABA-ergic horizontal cells, (2) GABA-ergic amacrine cells, (3) glycinergic amacrine cells; (4) glycinergic interplexiform cells; (5) dopaminergic interplexiform cells; and (6) indoleaminergic amacrine cells.
