A well designed post offer screening program including PDA, clear acceptable criteria, physical screening, standardized objective tests, and occupational and job specific tests can substantially decrease the number of injuries and resulting costs. The results of a study suggest post offer screening makes a difference on post hire injury and resulting costs. These findings are consistent with the literature reviewed. Occupational health professionals are key to the development, implementation, and evaluation of such a program and can directly affect the company's bottom line when employees are accurately matched to their job requirements.

This article explains central constructs and definitions underlying the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and discusses their implications for persons with severe and persistent mental illness, as well as for rehabilitation counselors working with this population. Focus is placed upon Title I of the ADA, which prohibits discrimination in employment. The article provides a brief review of legislative history relevant to the integration of people with mental illness into public life. It proceeds with a discussion of definitions under Title I of the ADA. Considerations in applying the ADA to assist persons with severe and persistent mental illness in employment are addressed throughout and are discussed in detail in the final section of the article.
Participation in recreational activities is a critical component of the career development process, providing opportunities for individuals to explore their interests and to develop work-related skills. Recreational participation also offers a healthy outlet for dealing with job-related and other life stressors. People with disabilities are often excluded from participation in recreational activities because of a multitude of barriers. This exclusion can seriously impede the career development of these individuals. This article explores the importance of recreational planning as part of the vocational rehabilitation process. The authors define inclusive recreation and discuss the implications of recreational planning in the various phases of rehabilitation.

The development of occupational hearing loss is very important for the recommendation to change the work place. 1960 Dieroff has described a phasic development of noise induced hearing loss. After ten years in noisy environment no further development of hearing impairment was determinable. Recent investigations point to a logarithmical respectively linear dependence of noise induced permanent threshold shift on the duration of exposure to noise. During our observation over a period of two years of employees working on noisy jobs, no stay of noise induced permanent threshold shift proceeding could be stated after ten or twenty years. As the raiting sound level of the working places, which we have studied, had only approx. 60 to 100 dB(A), it can be assumed, that under these conditions the noise induced hearing loss developes delayed and the noise induced permanent threshold shift increases as long as it must be worked under noisy conditions. The noise induced hearing loss depends on the intensity of noise exposure of the different groups. Also the group of storehouse- and court personnel as well as the drivers, being exposed only to a raiting sound level of approx. 65-75 dB(A), showed a significant higher noise induced permanent threshold shift than the group of administrative employees.

Major structural labour market changes, i.e. dramatic losses in job opportunities for unskilled labour and continually rising levels of job requirements facing skilled workers on the one hand and an increasing demand for skilled workers on the other, are entailing enhanced job opportunities for disadvantaged societal groups, at the same time however also increasing the occupational risk of these populations, among them the learning disabled. The vocational training centres having for more than a decade been gaining experience in the vocational and social rehabilitation of this latter group, the project outlined is intended to make even better use of their potential. The main objectives of the project are: 1. optimizing the vocational training centres' range of placement-focussed measures by: intensifying industrial training periods, coordinated "start up" support on occupational entry, post-placement services; 2. transfer of the vocational training centres' technical knowledge and experience into industry-based training by: follow-along support services ("ausbildungsbegleitende Hilfen"), workshops on the initial vocational training of learning disabled young adults, and other forms of cooperation. Apart from reaching the goals outlined, the project is expected to give new impulse to the day-to-day practice of the vocational training centres as well as to generate even greater networking of the centres with their industrial environments.
