Microcomputer applications in clinical ophthalmology.

An Apple II computer was programmed for use as a clinical tool in ophthalmology. Currently, eleven distinct programs compose the Ophthalmology Program Library (OPL). These are used in diagnostic and therapeutic situations and are based on equations in physiologic optics. Problems in intraocular lens power calculation, astigmatism control, and spectacle over-refraction with spherocylinder addition (among others) are discussed. To demonstrate the usability of such a system, programs concerned with postcataract extraction astigmatism are discussed in depth. Practicing ophthalmologists should find this system of clinical value.

A microcomputer-based activity meter for multiple animals.

We describe and validate a computer-video system that records and displays in real-time the activity of multiple specimens in a user-defined space, at user-defined intervals. The computer program uses image subtraction algorithms to record changes in video images, and stores observations in column format or as a series of 2-D matrices. The program was tested under various lighting conditions, backgrounds, specimen size and specimen speed. An AV model of Macintosh computer with video input from a camera or video cassette recorder was used to record and analyze the mechanical movement of spots on a turntable and the locomotor activity of an ant colony. The limitations and potential applications of the program are discussed.

Microcomputer program for automated action potential waveform analysis.

A program for action potential waveform analysis based on a PC compatible computer is described. Single or averaged action potentials are analyzed by obtaining its first derivative and using criteria which allow automatic measurement of several action potential components, including: depolarization rate, repolarization rate, amplitude, duration, resting membrane potential and afterhyperpolarization amplitude and slope. Data can be imported from pClamp (Axon Instruments) and exported to other software such as Excel, Sigmaplot and MatLab for example.

[Aging and procedural memory. Study of a series of tests on microcomputers].

The authors have assessed perceptual motor tasks involving the learning of the mouse control by locking at a Macinthosh computer screen during three consecutive sessions. Tests were performed by 102 control subjects aged between 16 and 85 years. Concerning age, there was a significant time difference (ANOVA) but improvement was the same for all subjects. Educational level and IQP results didn't influence procedural performance. Men were faster in three tasks. We can argue that implicit learning abilities appear before explicit memory and within the adult life span there appears to be little significant deterioration in implicit memory abilitie.

A microcomputer program for automated neuronal spike detection and analysis.

A system for on-line spike detection and analysis based on an IBM PC/AT compatible computer, written in TURBO PASCAL 6.0 and using commercially available analog-to-digital hardware is described here. Spikes are detected by an adaptive threshold which varies as a function of signal mean and its variability. Since the threshold value is determined automatically by the signal-to-noise ratio analysis, the user is not actively involved in controlling its level. This program has been reliably used for the detection and analysis of the spike discharge of vestibular system afferent neurons. It generates the interval-joint distribution graph, the interval histogram, the autocorrelation function, the autocorrelation histogram, and phase-space graphs, thus, providing a complete set of graphical and statistical data for the characterization of the dynamics of neuronal spike activity. Data can be exported to other software such as Excel, Sigmaplot and MatLab, for example.

Determinants of microcomputer technology use: implications for education and training of health staff.

In hospitals and other Healthcare settings, increasingly, hands-on computer use is becoming an important behaviour for effective job performance. The literature has identified differences that relate to computer use between occupational categories in health services. The objectives of this study were to identify factors that determine computer acceptance among occupational groups in Community Health and to predict the factors that relate to computer use. A survey was administered to all Community Health staff in one health service area. Health administrators were found to have a significantly higher training in computers, a higher frequency of use and a higher level of skill for both applications (word processing (WP) and database (DB)) than nurses. The results of a regression analysis shows that about 55% of the variation in the use of WP is explained by computer skills, perceived usefulness (PU) and designation. In the case of DB use, PU was the only significant predictor explaining 53% of the variation. Both level of education and prior training were not significant predictors. The implication for health informatics education (and service training) of these findings is that, in the workplace, health professionals would use computers when they perceive it to be useful for performance in their jobs.

ELDAR, a knowledge base system on microcomputer for electrolyte solutions. The factual knowledge of ELDAR.

The knowledge base system ELDAR (ELectrolyte DAta Regensburg), consisting of data base, method base, rule base, and communication manager, classifies the knowledge of electrolyte solutions into factual, algorithmic, and rule knowledge. In this paper information is given on the factual knowledge of ELDAR and the mapping of facts in Codd's relational data model with an extension of its "1st Normal Form" to repeating attributes. ELDAR offers equal user interfaces for all factual knowledge services, such as literature, data, thesaurus, module, parameter, basic data, and rule retrieval.
