Structures of three different pleckstrin homology domains have been determined within the past year. They have a common core consisting of a seven-stranded and strongly bent beta-sheet and a C-terminal alpha-helix that packs against the beta-sheet. Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate and related compounds specifically bind to pleckstrin homology domains, suggesting that the domain may be involved in reversible anchorage to membranes or in recognition of a second messenger, such as inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate. Pleckstrin homology domains have also been suggested to bind to the G beta gamma complex, but direct evidence for this is missing.

Spectral acquisition time is one of the limiting factors in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) retrospective biodosimetry in teeth. Acquisition times for one sample can be from 2 to 4h. This problem is even more acute for in vivo EPR measurements in L-band. Patients cannot be expected to remain stationary for these lengths of time. In order to overcome this limitation, we investigated the dependence of EPR dose measurements on the number of data points in an EPR spectrum. We have shown that this number could be reduced from 1024 to 256 (factor of 4 reduction in spectral acquisition time) at 5 mT magnetic field sweep without a loss of precision in the dose measurements.

In Calabria, a study team form legal medicine emergency (LME) formed to initiate a Crisis Unit (CU) able to manage and deal LME with complicated operations and roles, people and technical aspects involvement. First steps are planning, scene study and organization. Everything connecting the first and second emergency to have practicable application.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the shaping of oval-shaped root canals using 2 different preparation techniques resulted in significant morphologic differences. STUDY DESIGN: Forty lower premolars with oval-shaped root canals were divided into group A, instrumented with the Anatomic Endodontic Technology (AET) system, and group B, treated with ProTaper instruments. A modified Bramante technique was used to analyze changes in root canal diameters (DeltaD), changes in surface area (DeltaA), and the change in buccolingual and mesiodistal ratio (DeltaR). The data were subjected to a Student t test at a significance level of P < 0.05. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were found between the 2 groups at coronal and middle levels. There was no statistically significant difference at the apical level. CONCLUSIONS: The 2 techniques produced a significant difference in the ultimate shape of the coronal and middle portions of oval-shaped root canals, with the AET system removing more tooth structure at these levels. However, no differences were observed at the apical third.
