[Bone mineral density of adults living in the city of Wrocław compared with the reference ranges].

Certain elements of lifestyles (distinctive for the particular population) are presumed to influence on bone metabolism. This fact results in considerable differences between various populations, concerning both the occurrence of the normal variability of BMD (bone mineral content) among adult and elderly men and women, and also the prevalence of osteopenia or osteoporosis. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the variability of BMD in a group of healthy and occupationally active inhabitants of the city of Wroclaw, Poland (426 men aged 20-59 and 1218 women aged 20-62) and to compare our results with the reference ranges provided by the producer of the Stratec 960 apparatus. Trabecular and total BMD at the distal radius of the nondominant hand were assessed by peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT) using the Stratec 960 apparatus. BMD of Polish men and women significantly differ from the reference ranges of Stratec 960. The unfavourable phenomenon of the greater BMD decline with age, as compared to the standard values provided by the producer of the device, occurred. It should also be stressed that this reduction is more intense with age and it is marked among men older than 36. Taking into consideration the fact, that our material comprises only occupationally active subjects, the revealed differences would be probably greater, if they were evaluated in Polish population as a whole (our sample does not include persons, who are retired from the healthy conditions). Considering those significant discrepancies between our data and the Stratec reference population, one should be careful when using the normative database provided by Stratec for the densitometric diagnosis of osteoporosis among Polish women and men. Additionally the present study reveals that BMD (and its age-related changes during normal aging) is one of the features characteristic for the particular regional population, which is due to inter-populational differences of those elements of lifestyle, which can influence both general health condition and bone mineral density.

Long-term excessive magnesium supplementation is deleterious whereas suboptimal supply is beneficial for bones in rats.

The long-term effects of a suboptimal magnesium supply inducing a marginal or moderate deficiency or of an excessive magnesium supplementation corresponding to a basal diet with a high pharmacological intake were investigated in 36 growing Sprague-Dawley female rats. The rats were randomly divided in three groups and received a purified diet with 7 g calcium, 5 g phosphorus and either 0.2, 0.5 or 2 g magnesium per kg diet for 7 months. At the end of the trial, plasma and erythrocyte total magnesium concentrations were significantly lower in the magnesium-deficient group than in the respective control group. Serum concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, PTH and IGF-I and the length of the right humeri were not affected by the dietary treatment. The volumes corrected for body weight, the medio-lateral diameters and the ratios dry weight/length of the right humeri, and the dry weight corrected for body weight of the left tibiae and of the right humeri were significantly smaller in the magnesium-supplemented group than in the two other groups. The magnesium contents of the left tibiae and of the first lumbar vertebrae were significantly lower in the magnesium-deficient group than in the two other groups. In the right femora, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry revealed significantly smaller areas in the proximal part and significantly smaller mineral contents in the second proximal quarter in the magnesium-supplemented group compared with the two other groups. Peripheral quantitative computer tomography of the right humeri revealed in the cortex significantly larger values for the relative area, mineral content, mineral density and thickness in the magnesium-deficient group compared with the control group. The maximum point of the load-deformation curve was significantly reduced in the fifth lumbar vertebrae and in the proximal femoral metaphyses of the magnesium-supplemented group. These results indicate that the long-term suboptimal magnesium supply improved some of the parameters indicators of bone health whereas the long-term supplementation was deleterious.

No programming required. Mobile PCs can help physicians work more efficiently, especially when the application is designed to fit the practice.

UNLABELLED: The Jacobson Medical Group San Antonio PROBLEM: Jacobson Medical Group (JMG) needed a way to effectively and efficiently coordinate referral information between their hospitalist physicians and specialists. SOLUTION: JMG decided to replace paper-based binders with something more convenient and easily updated. The organization chose to implement a mobile solution that would provide its physicians with convenient access to a database of information via a hand-held computer. RESULTS: The hand-held solution provides physicians with full demographic profiles of primary care givers for each area where the group operates. The database includes multiple profiles based on different healthcare plans, along with details about preferred and authorized specialists. KEYS TO SUCCESS: JMG adopted a user-friendly solution that the hospitalists and specialists would embrace and actually use.

AX.25 amateur packet radio as a possible emergency network.

In modern society more and more medical applications need a reliable data transfer. In emergency situations, such transfer may not be available because parts of the communications infrastructure may be affected. An alternative way could be the use of the amateur radio packet network, which offers almost global coverage. We analyzed its use as an emergency data transfer support, including transport of real-time medical data.
