Early detection of high risk subjects in affective disorders.

1. Family, twin and linkage studies indicate that genetic factors are involved in the etiology of major affective disorders. 2. Recent clinical and biological research suggest that affective disorders are an heterogeneous group of illnesses, with variable genetic determination. 3. Since Lithium carbonate has been proven to be an effective prophylactic treatment in affective disorders, the question arises whether early detection of affective illness is possible and what are the implications for genetic counseling and primary prevention of affective illness.

Affective disorders in hospitalized children and adolescents with mental retardation: a retrospective study.

We contrasted a sample of children and adolescents with affective disorders and mental retardation with a comparison group on behavioral symptoms, associated diagnoses, and psychopharmacologic treatment. Fifty consecutive patients with both impaired intellectual functioning and at least one affective disorder admitted to a psychiatric inpatient unit for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities and psychiatric disorders were matched to a group of 50 inpatients without depression. Behavioral symptoms such as suicidal ideation or gestures, crying, irritability, sleep problems, agitation, mood lability, and social withdrawal/isolation occurred significantly more often in the affective group than in the comparison group. Aggression, however, was the most frequent behavior concern for both groups, whereas disruption/destruction was identified significantly more often in the comparison group. Regarding Axis I diagnoses, the comparison group was more often identified with externalizing disorders (ADHD, ODD), though there was a high rate of comorbidity in the affective disorder group. The behavioral symptoms used to diagnosis normally developing children and adolescents appear to be applied in making affective disorders diagnoses in this sample of children and adolescents with mental retardation.

Coping motives and trait negative affect: testing mediation and moderation models of alcohol problems among American Red Cross disaster workers who responded to the September 11,2001 terrorist attacks.

This study explored the mechanism by which trait negative affect and alcohol coping motives are associated with alcohol-related problems in a sample of American Red Cross workers who participated in the relief operation following the attacks in New York City, the Pentagon, and the Pennsylvania crash site on Sept. 11th 2001. The results supported the mediation but not moderation model of coping motives. The support for the mediation model was fairly strong, including small to moderate associations between negative affect and alcohol problems, moderate to strong associations between negative affect and coping motives, and evidence of coping motives mediating the negative affect to alcohol problems relationships. The association between negative affect and coping motives was stronger among younger participants.

Gill and liver histopathological changes in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) exposed to oil sands process-affected water.

The extraction of bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands (Alberta, Canada) produces significant volumes of process-affected water containing elevated levels of naphthenic acids (NAs), ions, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The sublethal response of aquatic organisms exposed to oil sands constituents in experimental aquatic environments that represent possible reclamation options has been studied. In this study, the effects of process-affected waters on gill and liver tissues in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and caged goldfish (Carassius auratus) held in several reclamation ponds at Syncrude's Mildred Lake site have been assessed. Following a 3-week exposure, significant gill (epithelial cell necrosis, mucous cell proliferation) and liver (hepatocellular degeneration, inflammatory cell infiltration) histopathological changes were noted in fish held in waters containing high levels of oil sands process-affected water. In addition, measurements of gill dimensions (gill morphometrical indices) proved sensitive and provided evidence of a physiological disturbance (gas exchange) with exposure to oil sands materials. Due to the complexity of oil sands process-affected water, the cause of the alterations could not be attributed to specific oil sands constituents. However, the histopathological parameters were strong indicators of exposure to oil sands process-affected water and morphometrical data were sensitive indicators of pathological response, which can be used to identify the interactive effects of ionic content, NAs, and PAHs in future laboratory studies.

No association of clock gene T3111C polymorphism and affective disorders.

CLOCK was hypothesised to be related to susceptibility of affective disorders. To test subsamples of affectively disordered patients, we examined age of onset (AoO), numbers of episodes and melancholic type of clinical manifestation. Using PCR and RFLP, we investigated in patients with unipolar depression and bipolar disorder (BP) whether the CLOCK T3111C SNP is associated with affective disorders (n=102) compared to healthy controls (n=103). No differences were found either in genotype or allele frequency distributions of T3111C polymorphism between patients compared to healthy controls (p>0.2). No deviations from Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) were detected either in patients, or healthy controls. Results suggest that there is no association between the T3111C SNP and affective disorders in general. Data of our sample replicate prior findings of Desan et al. [Am. J. Med. Genet. 12 (2000) 418]. Subsamples of patients with high numbers of affective episodes did show some deviations in genotypes (p=0.0585).

Deeply infiltrating endometriosis affecting the rectum and lymph nodes.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze morphologic aspects of bowel endometriosis. DESIGN: Prospective study of 35 consecutive cases of bowel endometriosis. SETTING: Multidisciplinary group practice and teaching hospital. PATIENT(S): Thirty-five patients with bowel endometriosis were assessed between September 2003 and June 2005. INTERVENTION(S): Histologic analysis of 35 tissue samples removed at laparoscopic rectosigmoidectomy. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): We performed an evaluation of lesion size, number of lesions present in the bowel, intestinal wall layers affected by the endometriotic lesion, circumference of the intestinal loop affected by the endometriotic lesion, and presence of lymph nodes with foci of endometriosis. RESULT(S): Analysis of the surgical samples revealed lymph nodes in the pericolic adipose tissue of 19 (54%), cases and in 5 of these cases (26.3%), endometriosis had affected the lymph nodes. When the thickness of the endometriotic lesion reached 1.75 cm, lymph nodes of all patients were affected, and all patients in whom more than 80% of the circumference of the intestinal loop was affected by endometriosis presented with positive lymph nodes. CONCLUSION(S): This study raises doubts about whether this form of the disease can still be considered a clinically benign disease.

Negative affect states and cardiovascular disorders: a review and the proposal of a unifying biopsychosocial concept.

AIM: The purpose of this review was to study the relationships between negative affect states and cardiovascular disorders. PROCEDURE: The phenomenology of the negative affect states of depression, helplessness, hopelessness, vital exhaustion and grief is described. Their correlations with morbidity and mortality are analyzed. The physiological correlates of the affect states are pointed out. Finally, the reaction pattern of conservation-withdrawal according to Schmale and Engel and its ontogenesis are outlined. This is a disengaging behavior pattern as opposed to the engaging fight-flight reaction pattern of Cannon. The giving up complex, with its affects of helplessness and hopelessness, is explained. CONCLUSIONS: The giving up complex in the context of the conservation-withdrawal pattern presents a biologically and developmentally sound conceptual basis for the understanding of the relationships of the negative affect states with cardiovascular disorders. This enables the integration of the concept of vital exhaustion, which has become the most promising operationalized instrument in psychosocial cardiovascular research.

The 5HTTLPR polymorphism of the serotonin transporter gene is associated with affective temperaments as measured by TEMPS-A.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence supports the notion of a continuum between affective temperaments and major mood disorders, suggesting that these temperament types represent the subclinical manifestations of affective disorders and often present an increased vulnerability for these diseases. METHODS: The Hungarian rendition of the full-scale 110-item version of the TEMPS-A questionnaire and 5HTTLPR genotype was investigated in a sample of 139 unrelated Caucasian females with no current or lifetime Axis I psychiatric disorders. RESULTS: A significant association was found between the s allele and the TEMPS scores of the depressive, anxious, irritable, and particularly the cyclothymic temperaments; no such association emerged with respect to the hyperthymic temperament. LIMITATION: The database is entirely female. Given that the hyperthymic type predominates in males, our results could have been different if men were included in our sample. CONCLUSIONS: Our results are in good agreement with earlier studies reporting a strong association between the s allele of the 5HTTLPR and major as well as subthreshold forms of depression, and extend this association to the normative temperament level. Indeed, these temperaments might best be regarded as proximate behavioural endophenotypes. Our data raise the provocative possibility that the genetic potential for mood episodes lies in these temperaments. Further studies are needed to delineate the role of gender in the associations under consideration, as well as to investigate the genetic background of the hyperthymia-mania part of the affective spectrum. Given that affective temperaments are widely distributed in the general population, the strategy employed by us is of potential public health significance in terms of detecting individuals in the community at risk for affective spectrum disorders.

Differential performance on tasks of affective processing and decision-making in patients with Panic Disorder and Panic Disorder with comorbid Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychological studies have provided evidence for deficits in psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and mood disorders. However, neuropsychological function in Panic Disorder (PD) or PD with a comorbid diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has not been comprehensively studied. The present study investigated neuropsychological functioning in patients with PD and PD + MDD by focusing on tasks that assess attention, psychomotor speed, executive function, decision-making, and affective processing. METHODS: Twenty-two unmedicated patients with PD, eleven of whom had a secondary diagnosis of MDD, were compared to twenty-two healthy controls, matched for gender, age, and intelligence on tasks of attention, memory, psychomotor speed, executive function, decision-making, and affective processing from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), Cambridge Gamble Task, and Affective Go/No-go Task. RESULTS: Relative to matched healthy controls, patients with PD + MDD displayed an attentional bias toward negatively-valenced verbal stimuli (Affective Go/No-go Task) and longer decision-making latencies (Cambridge Gamble Task). Furthermore, the PD + MDD group committed more errors on a task of memory and visual discrimination compared to their controls. In contrast, no group differences were found for PD patients relative to matched control subjects. LIMITATIONS: The sample size was limited, however, all patients were drug-free at the time of testing. CONCLUSIONS: The PD + MDD patients demonstrated deficits on a task involving visual discrimination and working memory, and an attentional bias towards negatively-valenced stimuli. In addition, patients with comorbid depression provided qualitatively different responses in the areas of affective and decision-making processes.

An in vitro investigation of microtensile bond strengths of two dentine adhesives to caries-affected dentine.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the micro-tensile bond strengths of two different adhesive systems (ABF (Clearfil Protect Bond), Kuraray Medical Inc., Tokyo, Japan) and Prime & Bond NT (PBNT, Dentsply, Konstanz, Germany) bonded to caries-affected dentine retained after chemo-mechanical caries removal using Carisolv gel, with that retained after excavation using conventional hand instrumentation. METHOD: Twenty, adult, human extracted carious teeth were used in this split tooth study with bur-cut cavities in sound dentine acting as controls. After clinical caries excavation, the occlusal cavities in each experimental group were restored with either bonding system plus composite. Matchstick-shaped samples through the bond interfaces were sectioned and microtensile bond strengths recorded. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to ascertain the mode of failure at the restoration-dentine interface. RESULTS: Statistical analysis of the bond strength data showed that for the ABF group, there was no difference in bond strengths between the controls and Carisolv group but these values were significantly higher than those for the hand-excavated samples. PBNT samples showed no significant differences in any of the three test groups, with wider ranging data sets. SEM analysis indicated a variety of failures at the interface including cohesive failures within the caries-affected dentine itself. CONCLUSIONS: From the data generated by this study it could be concluded that microtensile bond strengths of PBNT/composite restorations to caries-affected dentine in clinical cavities were statistically comparable to those to sound dentine. In the ABF/composite restored group (self-etched), the use of conventional hand excavation appeared to weaken the bond strength to the remaining caries-affected dentine. However, the use of Carisolv gel excavation did not compromise bond strengths to caries-affected dentine in either group tested.

Field reconnaissance and estimation of petroleum hydrocarbon and heavy metal contents of soils affected by the Ebocha-8 oil spillage in Niger Delta, Nigeria.

Field reconnaissance of the Ebocha-8 oil spill-affected site at Obiobi/Obrikom in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria was carried out to assess the extent of damage to the terrestrial ecosystem and delimit the epicenter of oil spillage. Following three successive reconnaissance surveys, the area to be sampled was delimited (200 x 200 m2), and soil samples were collected using the grid method from three replicate quadrats at two depths, surface (0-15 cm) and subsurface (15-30 cm). A geographically similar area located 50 m adjacent to the oil-polluted area was used as a reference (control) site. Total hydrocarbon content (THC) and heavy metal concentrations were later determined in the laboratory by extraction and spetrophotemetric techniques. Generally, the THC of soils at surface and subsurface depths of the oil-polluted plots was 2.06 x 10(4) +/- 4.97 x 10(3) mg/kg and 1.67 x 10(3) +/- 3.61 x 10(2) mg/kg soil, respectively, (no overlap in standard errors at 95% confidence limit) while concentrations of heavy metals(Pb, Cd, V, Cu and Ni) were enhanced, especially at the surface. The high levels of THC and heavy metals may predispose the site, which hitherto served as arable agricultural land, to impaired fertility and possible conflagration. When concentrations of heavy metals reach the levels obtained in this study, they may become toxic to plants or possibly bio-accumulate, thus leading to toxic reactions along the food chain. While the spilled-oil may have contributed to the enhanced levels of the metals in the affected soils, physico-chemical properties of the soils, mobility of metals, and the intense rainfall and flooding that preceded the period of study may have also contributed in part to their enhanced concentrations. The presence of high hydrocarbon content may cause oxygen deprivation, which may result in the death of soil fauna by asphyxiation. There is, therefore, an urgent need to clear the affected site of these excess hydrocarbon deposits so as to enhance the rehabilitation process of the affected mat layer of soils. Other appropriate mitigating measures, such as subsequent monitoring of hydrocarbon levels at suitable intervals after the clean up activities, are also recommended, with reference to the findings of this study, for effective management of the affected area.

Deviations in upper-limb function of the less-affected side in congenital hemiparesis.

In the present study we examined upper-limb function of the less-affected side in young adolescents with congenital hemiparesis (cerebral palsy: CP). Five participants with hemiparetic CP and five control participants performed a cyclical reach-and-grasp task with the less-affected hand towards targets placed at 60%, 100%, and 140% of the participant's arm-length. Trunk involvement, end-effector kinematics and activation of the biceps and triceps were examined together with several clinical measures. Movements at the less-affected side were slower and peak velocity was reached later in the experimental group. Even though total trunk involvement was identical in both groups, it was selectively limited to forward bending in participants with CP. Elbow amplitudes of these participants were smaller for the 60% and 100% arm-length target distances. Additionally, participants with CP showed weak positive correlations between agonist (triceps) activity and elbow amplitude, suggesting that deficient agonist rather than antagonist innervation was responsible for the decreased elbow involvement. Especially the more severely affected participants with CP proved to compensate their relatively small elbow amplitudes by increased forward bending. Collectively, the findings demonstrate deviations in upper-limb control of the less-affected body side in congenital hemiparesis.

Biochemistry of ginseng root tissues affected by rusty root symptoms.

Ginseng rusty root, a disorder of unknown cause (s), in which reddish-brown to orange-brown areas develop on the surface of field-grown roots, was studied at the cellular and biochemical levels. Using light microscopy, the affected areas were shown to comprise of the epidermis and underlying 6-8 cell layers of the cortical tissues. Rusty root areas ranged from small clusters of 3-4 cells to larger expanding areas of >80 cells. These cells appeared golden-brown and stained a bluish-green with Toluidine Blue indicating the presence of phenolic compounds. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic emission spectrometry of affected epidermal cells revealed a significant accumulation of Fe, Al, Si, Mg and other cations when compared to adjoining healthy cells. The concentrations of the six most common ginsenosides found in ginseng roots (Rg(1), Re, Rb(1), Rc, Rb(2), and Rd) were reduced by 40-50% in rusty root-affected epidermal and cortical tissues when compared to adjacent healthy tissues. Total phenolic compounds were increased by up to threefold in affected tissues and HPLC analysis revealed significantly higher levels of quercetin, cinnamic acid, vanillic acid, p-coumaric acid, benzoic acid, chlorogenic acid and catechin. In vitro phenolic-metal binding assays confirmed that phenolic compounds were able to sequester positively-charged metal ions, in particular Fe, to form a phenolic-metal ion complex. In ginseng callus cultures, accumulation of phenolic compounds was increased threefold within 12 h of treatment with chitosan (1%), and to a lesser extent by wounding. Specific defense enzymes, namely phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL, E.C. 4. 3. 1. 5.), polyphenoloxidase (PPO, E.C. 1. 10. 3. 1.) and peroxidase (POD, E.C. 1. 11. 1. 7.), were also significantly enhanced in treated callus tissues and in rusty root tissues. On field-grown ginseng roots, application of chitosan induced symptoms similar to rusty root, whereas wounding and ethylene treatments did not. Based on these results, rusty root symptoms on ginseng are proposed to result from an induction of host defense responses, especially phenolic production, in epidermal and underlying cortical cells. This induction is likely due to attempted invasion by as-yet uncharacterized chitin-containing soil fungi, which were observed in many of the affected cells. Subsequent oxidation of phenolic compounds and sequestration of metal ions, in particular Fe, appear to be largely responsible for the symptoms observed.

Do calcium-mediated cellular signalling pathways, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), estrogen or progesterone receptor antagonists, or bacterial endotoxins affect bovine placental function in vitro?

The major objective of this experiment was to determine whether the bovine placenta could be stimulated to secrete progesterone, since the bovine placenta secretes little progesterone when the corpus luteum is functional. Secondly, we wanted to determine whether reported abortifacients or progesterone or estrogen receptor antagonists affected bovine placental prostaglandin secretion. The ovine placenta secretes half of the circulating progesterone at day 90 of pregnancy and PGE2 appears to regulate ovine placental progesterone secretion. Calcium has been reported to regulate placental progesterone secretion in cattle. Diced 186-245-day placental slice explants from six Brahman and six Angus cows were incubated in vitro at 39.5 degrees C under 95% air: 5% CO2 at pH 7.2 in 5 ml of M-199 for 1 h in the absence of treatments and for 4 and 8 h in the presence of treatments. Treatments were: vehicle; R24571; compound 48/80; IP3; PGE2; CaCl2; cyclosporin A; lipopolysaccharide (endotoxin) from Salmonella abortus equi., enteriditis, and typhimurium; monensin; ionomycin; arachidonic acid; mimosine; palmitic acid; progesterone, androstenedione; estradiol-17beta; A23187; RU-486; or MER-25. Jugular and uterine venous plasma and culture media were analyzed for progesterone, PGE2 and PGF2alpha by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Plasma hormone data were analyzed by a One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Hormone data in culture media were analyzed for breed and treatment effects by a Factorial Design (2 breeds, 2-range of days, 21 treatments) for ANOVA (2 x 2 x 21). Since hormone data secreted by placental tissue in vitro did not differ (P > or = 0.05) by breed or range of days of pregnancy, data were pooled and analyzed by a One-Way ANOVA. Concentrations of PGE2 in uterine venous blood were two-fold greater (P < or = 0.05) in Angus than Brahman cows. PGE2 and PGF2alpha in vehicle controls increased from 4 to 8h (P < or = 0.05), but not progesterone (P > or = 0.05) Progesterone in culture media treated with RU-486 increased (P < or = 0.05) at 4 and 8 h compared to vehicle controls and was not affected by other treatments (P > or = 0.05). Concentrations of PGE2 in media at 4 and 8 h were lower (P < or = 0.05) when compared to controls except treatment with PGE2 at 4 and 8h and RU-486 at 8h (P > or = 0.05). PGF2alpha was increased (P < or = 0.05) by RU-486 at 8h and no other treatment affected PGF2alpha at 4 or 8 h (P < or = 0.05). In conclusion, modulators of cellular calcium signalling pathways given alone do not affect bovine placental progesterone secretion at the days studied and progesterone receptor-mediated events appear to suppress placental progesterone, PGF2alpha, and PGE2 secretion in cattle. In addition, PGE2 does not appear to regulate bovine placental progesterone secretion when the corpus luteum is functional and bacterial endotoxin does not appear to affect bovine placental secretion of PGF2alpha or PGE2.

Early-onset of symptoms predicts conversion to non-affective psychosis in ultra-high risk individuals.

OBJECTIVE: We examined if age of onset of psychiatric symptoms and/or sex predict conversion to non-affective or affective psychosis in individuals considered to be at ultra-high risk for schizophrenia. METHOD: Participants (n=86) were offered treatment and monthly follow-up until transition to psychosis, or for 12 months if they did not meet exit criteria for psychotic disorder. Individuals without transition to psychosis at 12-month were reassessed approximately 3 years after the end of the treatment phase. Ultra-high risk was defined by the presence of subthreshold and/or self-limiting psychotic symptoms and/or having a family history of psychotic disorder combined with functional decline. Cox regressions after adjustment for treatment interventions were applied to investigate associations between age of onset, sex, and other baseline measures with progression to psychotic outcomes. RESULTS: Early age of onset of psychiatric symptoms, in particular onset before age 18 was the only tested variable that significantly predicted non-affective psychosis. Independent significant predictors of affective psychosis were poor functioning, female sex and the presence of a combination of intake criteria (family history of psychosis plus drop in functioning, and attenuated and/or brief limited psychotic symptoms) at baseline. CONCLUSIONS: Age of onset of psychiatric symptoms is the single most important factor associated with conversion to non-affective psychosis in ultra-high risk individuals.

Mental health burden amongst inhabitants of an arsenic-affected area in Inner Mongolia, China.

Inner Mongolia, China, is an area with high levels of arsenic. The adverse health effects resulting from chronic arsenic exposure include skin keratosis, vascular diseases and cancers. However, the effects of arsenic exposure on mental health have not received much attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of arsenic poisoning on the mental health of the inhabitants of an arsenic-affected area. We performed a cross-sectional study at two villages in Hetao Plain, Inner Mongolia. The populations of both villages were similar in age, sex, lifestyle, socioeconomic conditions, and geographic location. One hundred and thirty four (93.7%) of the 143 inhabitants in the arsenic-affected village and 36 (76.6%) of the 47 inhabitants in the arsenic-free village participated in the study. Subjects with a 30-item version of General Health Questionnaire score of 9 or more were defined as having symptoms of distress. The multiple logistic analyses showed that the mental health of the subjects in the arsenic-affected village was worse than in those in the arsenic-free village (OR=2.5, 95% CI=1.1-6.0). The effect of arsenic on mental health in arsenic-affected areas deserves further investigation. The mental health burden in arsenic-affected areas should be considered in the wider context of public and community health.

Immunosuppression in postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome affected pigs.

The present review concentrates on the clinical, pathological and immunological aspects of pigs suffering from PMWS which strongly suggest that PCV2 may be, in particular conditions, a cause of secondary immunodeficiency in pigs. From a clinical point of view, the lack of antibiotic therapy response against the disease, the existence of a litter effect and the concurrence of other disease syndromes and well-known secondary pathogens, such as Pneumocystis carinii, Chlamydia spp. and Aspergillus spp., may account as features of immunosuppression in PMWS. Furthermore, pathologic, immunohistologic and flow cytometric studies also suggest that pigs with PMWS may be immunosuppressed. Lymphocyte depletion of follicular and interfollicular areas together with macrophage infiltration of lymphoid tissues is a unique lesion, which is the basic feature of PMWS affected pigs. These findings are highly correlated with the decrease of circulating B- and T-cells and the diminution of these cell types in lymphoid organs, and with the increase of macrophage/monocytes lineage cells both in peripheral blood and lymphoid tissues in both naturally and experimentally PMWS affected pigs. The altered populations of cells participating in the immune system response both in blood and tissues suggests, at least in those severely PMWS affected pigs, a transient inability of diseased pigs to mount an effective immune response. From these points of view, strong suspicions on the immunosuppressive status of PMWS affected pigs do exist; however, future studies are needed to characterise the exact role of PCV2 on the immune system of pigs affected with PMWS.

Dietary restraint and negative affect as mediators of body dissatisfaction and bulimic behavior in adolescent girls and boys.

Stice's dual pathway model of dietary restraint and negative affect was examined in both adolescent girls and boys. Self-report measures assessing body dissatisfaction, dietary restraint, negative affect and bulimic behavior were administered to 267 girls and 199 boys aged between 12 and 16 years. The findings for the girls were consistent with Stice's model, in that they indicated that both dietary restraint and negative affect mediated the relationship between body dissatisfaction and bulimic behavior. For the boys who desired a thinner body size, only negative affect was found to mediate the relationship between body dissatisfaction and bulimic behavior. On the other hand, for boys who desired a larger body size, both body dissatisfaction and dietary restraint were found to exert an independent effect on bulimic behavior. As boys can aspire to two contrasting and seemingly opposite body size ideals, the findings highlight that the relationship between body dissatisfaction, dietary restraint, negative affect and bulimic behavior are more complex in males than in females. Further research using longitudinal designs is needed in order to test the directional and bidirectional nature of the observed interrelationships.
