Above-threshold ionization by an elliptically polarized field: interplay between electronic quantum trajectories

Measurements of energy-resolved angular distributions of electrons generated in above-threshold ionization of rare gases in a field with elliptical polarization are presented, with emphasis on the high-energy part of the spectra. The data show a second plateau at a specific angle with respect to the large component of the laser field. The results are compared to a calculation based on a strong-field rescattering approximation. This is interpreted in terms of the superposition of quantum trajectories. The second plateau is associated with the interference of electrons that do and that do not rescatter.

Interplay of self-doping and disorder in epitaxial Bi2Sr2Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O(2n+4+x) (n = 1,2) thin films under heavy-Ion irradiation

We propose a novel mechanism for the modification of T(c) in Bi(2)Sr(2)Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O(2n+4+x) epitaxial thin films (2212 and 2201) under energetic heavy-ion irradiation. By irradiating films with various oxygen content, we show from the temperature dependence of the resistance that irradiation always produces a doping effect superimposed on the damage caused to the sample. The effect is larger in 2201 than in 2212 thin films. The T(c) decrease observed by irradiating optimally doped films is partially due to this doping effect. Irradiation of semiconducting samples restores metallic superconducting behavior.

Large nonlinear dynamical response of superparamagnets: interplay between precession and thermoactivation in the stochastic landau-lifshitz equation

The nonlinear dynamical response of classical spins governed by the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz equation is found to be large and very sensitive to the damping in the medium-to-weak damping regime. This result is interpreted in terms of a cooperation, induced by the driving field, between the precession of the spin and its thermoactivation over the potential barrier. The large damping dependence (absent in the linear response) can be used to determine the evasive damping coefficient in superparamagnets, so clarifying the nature of the spin-environment interaction in these systems.

Quasiclassical negative magnetoresistance of a 2D electron gas: interplay of strong scatterers and smooth disorder.

We study the quasiclassical magnetotransport of noninteracting fermions in two dimensions moving in a random array of strong scatterers (antidots, impurities, or defects) on the background of a smooth random potential. We demonstrate that the combination of the two types of disorder induces a novel mechanism leading to a strong negative magnetoresistance, followed by the saturation of the magnetoresistivity rho(xx)(B) at a value determined solely by the smooth disorder. Experimental relevance to the transport in semiconductor heterostructures is discussed.

Transitions from vortex lines to sheets: interplay of topology and dynamics in an anisotropic superfluid.

In isotropic macroscopic quantum systems vortex lines can be formed while in anisotropic systems also vortex sheets are possible. Based on measurements of superfluid 3He-A, we present the principles which select between these two competing forms of quantized vorticity: sheets displace lines if the frequency of the external drive exceeds a critical limit. The resulting topologically stable state consists of multiple vortex sheets and has much faster dynamics than the state with vortex lines.

Interplay between time-temperature transformation and the liquid-liquid phase transition in water.

We study the new water model proposed by Mahoney and Jorgensen [J. Chem. Phys. 112, 8910 (2000)], which is closer to real water than previously proposed classical pairwise additive potentials. We simulate the model in a wide range of deeply supercooled states and find (i) the existence of a nonmonotonic "nose-shaped" temperature of maximum density line and a nonreentrant spinodal, (ii) the presence of a low-temperature phase transition, (iii) the free evolution of bulk water to ice, and (iv) the time-temperature-transformation curves at different densities.

Interplay between nonlinearity, scan speed, damping, and electronics in frequency modulation atomic-force microscopy.

Numerical simulations of the frequency modulation atomic force microscope, including the whole dynamical regulation by the electronics, show that the cantilever dynamics is conditionally stable and that there is a direct link between the frequency shift and the conservative tip-sample interaction. However, a soft coupling between the electronics and the nonlinearity of the interaction may significantly affect the damping. A resonance between the scan speed and the response time of the system can provide a simple explanation for the spatial shift and contrast inversion between topographical and damping images, and for the extreme sensitivity of the damping to a tip change.

Quantum phase transitions to charge-ordered and Wigner-crystal states under the interplay of lattice commensurability and long-range Coulomb interactions.

The relationship among the Wigner crystal, charge ordering, and the Mott insulator is studied by the path-integral renormalization group method in two-dimensional systems with long-range Coulomb interaction. In contrast to the insensitivity of the Hartree-Fock results, the stability of the solid drastically decreases with the decrease in the lattice commensurability. The transition to liquid occurs at the electron gas parameter r(s) approximately 2 for the filling n=1/2, showing a large reduction from r(s) approximately 35 in the continuum limit. A correct account of quantum fluctuations is crucial to understanding the charge-order stability generally observed only at simple fractional fillings and the nature of quantum liquids away from them.

Interplay between anisotropic strain relaxation and uniaxial interface magnetic anisotropy in epitaxial Fe films on (001) GaAs.

Grazing incidence x-ray diffraction study of Fe epitaxial ultrathin films (1.5-13 nm) on GaAs (001) reveals an anisotropy of both domain shape and strain, with [110] and [1-10] as the principal directions. It is shown that the observed thickness-dependent strain anisotropy, together with a uniaxial interface term, can provide an unambiguous explanation to the usual in-plane magnetic anisotropy and its thickness dependence observed in this magnetic thin-film system.

Interplay between geometry and flow distribution in an airway tree.

Uniform flow distribution in a symmetric volume can be realized through a symmetric branched tree. It is shown here, however, by 3D numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, that the flow partitioning can be highly sensitive to deviations from exact symmetry if inertial effects are present. The flow asymmetry is quantified and found to depend on the Reynolds number. Moreover, for a given Reynolds number, we show that the flow distribution depends on the aspect ratio of the branching elements as well as their angular arrangement. Our results indicate that physiological variability should be severely restricted in order to ensure adequate fluid distribution through a tree.

Femtosecond study of the interplay between excitons, trions, and carriers in (Cd,Mn)Te quantum wells.

We study the absorption by neutral excitons and positively charged excitons (trions) following a femtosecond, circularly polarized, resonant pump pulse. Three populations are involved: free holes, excitons, and trions, all exhibiting transient spin polarization. In particular, a polarization of the gas of free holes is created by the formation of trions. The evolution of these populations is described, including spin flip and trion formation. We evaluate the contributions of phase space filling and spin-dependent screening. We propose a new explanation of the oscillator strength stealing phenomena observed in doped quantum wells, based on the screening of neutral excitons by charge carriers. We have also found that binding holes into charged excitons excludes them from the interaction with the rest of the system, so that oscillator strength stealing is partially blocked.

Interplay between the mesoscopic Stoner and Kondo effects in quantum dots.

We consider electrons confined to a quantum dot interacting antiferromagnetically with a spin-1 / 2 Kondo impurity. The electrons also interact among themselves ferromagnetically with a dimensionless coupling J , where J =1 denotes the bulk Stoner transition. We show that as J approaches 1 there is a regime with enhanced Kondo correlations, followed by one where the Kondo effect is destroyed and impurity is spin polarized opposite to the dot electrons. The most striking signature of the first, Stoner-enhanced Kondo regime is that a Zeeman field increases the Kondo scale, in contrast to the case for noninteracting dot electrons. Implications for experiments are discussed.

Interplay between structure and size in a critical crystal nucleus.

We study the kinetics of crystal nucleation of an undercooled Lennard-Jones liquid using various path-sampling methods. We obtain the rate constant and elucidate the pathways for crystal nucleation. Analysis of the path ensemble reveals that crystal nucleation occurs along many different pathways, in which critical solid nuclei can be small, compact, and face centered cubic, but also large, less ordered, and more body centered cubic. The reaction coordinate thus includes, besides the cluster size, also the quality of the crystal structure.
