[Guidelines for treatment of missing anterior teeth].

The orthodontic treatment of patients with missing incisors should be directed to avoid prosthetic solutions. Specific rules have to be applied for the closure of spaces due to missing teeth to reduce the occurrence of papillae retraction and to place the substituting teeth in such a position that their crowns can be built up to look like the ones they replace. To realize these goals the mesiodistal angulations should deviate from the standard ones, a proper distribution of crown width should be achieved and finally a permanent retention with a palatally bonded thin multi-stranded wire should be installed in most cases.

Shock-absorbing behavior of five restorative materials used on implants.

The damping effect of five restorative materials used to veneer test crowns rigidly connected to a Brånemark implant and subjected to an impact force was measured. These materials included a gold alloy; a noble metal ceramic alloy; porcelain; a laboratory-processed, light-activated microfilled resin; and a heat- and pressure-polymerized poly(methyl methacrylate) resin. The two resins were found to reduce the impact force by about 50% when compared to porcelain or the alloys. The clinical significance of the results is discussed.

Adhesion of a new light-polymerized denture base resin to resin teeth and denture base materials.

Shear adhesive strength tests were conducted to examine the adhesion of a newly developed light-polymerized denture base resin (LPR) to resin teeth and denture base materials. When LPR was bonded to these materials with a new light-activated bonding agent, the adhesive strength improved greatly. Adhesive strengths of LPR to denture base metals were greater than, or similar to, the metal adhesive autopolymerized resin containing 4-META. Compared with the metal adhesive heat-polymerizing resin, the LPR adhesive values were less when bonded to pure titanium but greater for 18-8 stainless steel and the gold-silver-palladium alloy.

[Care of maxillary anterior gaps with ITI-Bonefit implants].

As for the Implantation in the upper frontal jaw region ITI-Bonefit-Implants show konceptional advantages to other systems. Surgical and prosthodontic techniques are demonstrated. In cases of extreme transversal atrophy segmental bone-splitting mostly makes implantation possible. First results from the dental clinic of Göttingen show a primary success rate of 100% in osteointegration and sufficient prosthodondic reconstruction.

Osseointegrated implants for single tooth replacement: a 1-year report from a multicenter prospective study.

One hundred seven dental implants were inserted to support single tooth restorations in 92 patients participating in a prospective multicenter investigation. Only three implants (2.8%) were lost after 1 year of clinical function. Most of the remaining restorations were esthetically successful by using modified components. The gingival condition was healthy around the single crowns and coincided well with the clinical situation around the permanent teeth. The most obvious problem experienced during the first year was related to loose abutment screws. Twenty-six percent of the screws retaining crowns were retightened during the observation period, but the frequency of loose screws had a tendency to decrease as the study progressed.

Monitoring of Tübingen endosseous dental implants by glycosaminoglycans analysis of gingival crevicular fluid.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were determined by cellulose acetate electrophoresis and densitometric scanning. Two GAG bands, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin-4-sulphate (C4S), were detected in GCF from implants, similar to the profile from teeth. High GCF volumes and GAG contents, notably C4S, may reflect postoperative alveolar bone responses, particularly resorption, at different stages of healing and function of successful implants. They may also indicate adverse tissue changes in failing implants. A comparison of crowned implants and matched teeth suggests that the periodontal ligament contributes to the GCF GAG profile. This may be a useful laboratory method of monitoring implants to detect adverse tissue responses at an early stage.

Treatment of osseous defects using Vicryl mesh (polyglactin 910) and the Brånemark implant: a case report.

The effectiveness of using Vicryl mesh (polyglactin 910) in combination with a Brånemark titanium implant is described. A maxillary central incisor with an apical osseous defect resulting from endodontic failure was treated with the Brånemark method of osseointegration for single tooth replacement. Vicryl mesh was used over the osseous defect site and uncovered 5 months later. New bone formation filling the defect and around the implant was observed.
