[The thymo-lymphatic system in congenital thymomegaly (clinico-morphological study)].

To elucidate the functional capacity of the thymus and to evaluate immunity in congenital thymomegaly the authors studied 200 autopsy thymicolymphatic specimens obtained from children under 5 who had died from congenital malformations or acute respiratory diseases. The sections were studied histologically, histochemically and using immunofluorescence to detect thymalin and measure blood thymic hormones. The hormones secretion in congenitally thymomegaly was found reduced, the deficiency growing with the disease progression. Congenital thymomegaly is defined as a primary immunodeficiency of the T-cell immunity system predominantly, which demonstrates hypo- or dysfunction of the enlarged thymus combined with elevated proliferative activity and T-lymphocyte semimaturation.

[Functional morphology of the lymphatic system of the rat uterus during pregnancy].

In the regional lymph nodes of the uterus the comparative volume of the paracortical zone significantly increases, especially within the period of the 13th-17th days of pregnancy. In the popliteal lymph node similar effect is not discovered. From the 7th up to the 11th day edema, vasodilatation, infiltration with special leucocytes are revealed. Endothelium of the postcapillary venules is hypertrophied, contains many migrating lymphocytes, which accumulate around the vessels mentioned. The volume of the microcirculatory bed is moderately increased. By the 17th day plasmoblasts, plasmocytes, Motta's cells, monocytes and especially macrophages appear in the paracortical zone. In B-zones and in medullary sinuses blasts, plasma cells, monocytes, macrophages, mitotically deviding cells increase in number. The part of the reticular cells decreases. The tensometric method demonstrates an increasing pressure of lymph in the iliac lymph node at pregnancy. Collateralies appear in the ovarian vein system, in the broad ligament of the uterus, in the lumbar area. The uterine vascular system is supposed to participate in adaptation to pregnancy. In genesis of the regional lymph node changes, discirculatory shifts, predominating during placental organogenesis, combine with phenomena of cell migration and proliferation (clearly revealed by the time when formation of the placenta is completed).

[The palatal tonsils as a part of the lymphatic system. Inflow and outflow of newly-formed lymphocytes].

Many lymphocytes continuously migrate from one lymphoid organ to another. The tonsils are also included in the migratory stream of long-lived lymphocytes. We investigated the question whether newly formed lymphocytes, for example, those produced in the spleen or mesenteric lymph nodes, also migrate to the tonsils and to which compartment. The spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes of normal young pigs were selectively labelled with the DNA precursor 3H-thymidine and one day later smears and sections of the tonsils were autoradiographed. About 1% of all spleen-derived young lymphocytes and about 0.5% of all emigrated mesenteric lymph node lymphocytes were found in palatine tonsils. These were almost exclusively small to medium sized lymphocytes. These cells were mainly found in the interfollicular area around high endothelial venules. Surprisingly high numbers were also located in the reticular epithelium of the crypts, in the corona and even in follicles. In a second series of experiment palatine tonsils were selectively labelled by multiple minute injections of 3H-thymidine. The follicles showed a very high labelling index but labelled lymphocytes were also identified in other compartments. One day later tonsil-derived lymphocytes were found in the spleen and lymph nodes. There is thus a continuous exchange of newly formed lymphocytes between the tonsils and other lymphoid organs.
