"Two contradictory approaches--an equilibrium view based on neoclassical economic principles and a structuralist view based on labour needs of core economies--dominate contemporary international migration research. Using a monthly time-series for Essen [Federal Republic of Germany], Sweden, and France for 1952-1982 of immigration by different nationalities, a specific hypothesis derived from the neoclassical view, relating immigration to economic growth and stagnation, was tested using the Box-Jenkins ARIMA modelling approach." The only support for the hypothesis came from the example of the local labor market in Essen. The author notes that "most migration flows are described by complex ARIMA models. Immigration legislation had a stronger and more direct effect on the strength and timing of flows than economic trends. Predictions based on univariate and bivariate models are not very useful: immigration trends over the past decade are significantly different from earlier flows."

"Interprovincial migration patterns of Canada's elderly are examined and compared with their nonelderly counterparts, by using data from Revenue Canada's income tax file for a fifteen-year period (1966/67-1980/81)." The results indicate that departure rates and patterns of destination choice are broadly similar for both groups, although "destination choice of the elderly was relatively sensitive...to environmental factors, whereas that of the nonelderly was relatively sensitive to labor-market variables...."
"The article concentrates on migration typologies and the role they play in the analysis of residential and labour migration. It is argued that in order to be able to understand the decisions individuals make regarding migration, the spatial adjustments as a consequence of the spatial separation of residence and workplace should be investigated. One way of obtaining more insight about these adjustment processes is by analysis of the influence of actual and perceived commuting on the decision to move. The suggested typology of residential and labour migration therefore contains commuting as the key factor. As an empirical application of the concepts, an analysis of actual migration in the Netherlands was undertaken." (SUMMARY IN FRE AND GER)
"Multidimensional scaling technique was applied to the Brazilian migration matrix in order to identify the functional regions of the nation, using the 1970 census data for males. The results obtained from three types of proximity matrices confirmed the key roles of Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso as the core states in addition to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Substantial circulation of migrants among the core states runs counter to the popular notion about the Northeastern states as the major source of labor in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The Northeast [was] found to consist of three groups of states: Maranhao, Piaui and Ceara showed a stable clustering, but peripherally located, in all configurations; and, the other two groups failed to form persistent regions across configurations. Though limited in scope, the observed attraction of Espirito Santo and Goias violated the widely held negative effect of distance and deserves further investigation."
"Among the effects produced in the Sierra of Ecuador by the programme of land reforms launched in 1964 was a reduction in the incomes from small-scale farming. At the same time, the growth of productive employment in urban areas was insufficient to provide round-the-year work to the fast growing army of jobseekers. Analysis of the agrarian structure and migration patterns before and after 1964 suggests that it was primarily this combination of circumstances that produced a pronounced shift towards short-term rather than permanent migration, thereby providing industry and services with the labour they needed while avoiding the disadvantages of severe urban overpopulation."
The implications of the Gulf War are assessed for the countries in Asia that send labor migrants to the Middle East. "This paper seeks to examine the effects of...the loss of remittances (and related issues, including return migration), primarily in terms of the long-term implications of the War for the future of contract labour migration in the Asian region...."

"Each year about 180,000 Norwegians move from one local government area to another. Further, a relatively large proportion of the workforce consists of commuters. Recent developments in the labour market have given the question of geographical mobility a new relevance. After definition of the relevant terms, migration and commuting streams of recent years are described; some causes and effects of geographic mobility are discussed."
