Winter survival of blood-fed and nonblood-fed Culex pipiens L.

Comparisons were made between groups of Culex pipiens L. with different physiologic histories to test their ability to sucessfully overwinter under field conditions. On 14 December 1978, each group of mosquitoes was marked with a distinctive fluorescent dust and released inside an abandoned ammunition bunker at Fort Washington, Maryland. To insure that dead mosquitoes could be dissected and information obtained on their ovarian development, a sample of females from each group was also released into a plexiglass cage that was attached to the inside wall of the room. The physiologic histories of each group of mosquitoes were as follows: (a) "wild caught", those which had entered the bunker prior to the release date, (b) "lab-reared diapausing nonblood-fed," (c) "lab-reared diapausing blood-fed nongravid, " (d)"lab-reared diapausing blood-fed gravid," (e) "lab-reared nondiapausing nonblood-fed," and (f) "lab-reared nondiapausing blood-fed." By 8 March 1979, all of the lab-reared nondiapausing groups, of mosquitoes released in the room had died, whereas 15.7, 22.4 and 24.7% were recovered from the "lab-reared diapausing nonblood-fed," "lab-reared diapausing blood-fed" (gravid and nongravid) and "wild caught" mosquitoes, respectively. For the mosquitoes in the cage, only 0, 2.1 and 7.0% of the "lab-reared nondiapausing blood-fed," "lab-reared nondiapausing nonblood-fed" and "lab-reared diapausing blood-fed gravid," respectively, survived. This compared to 45.4, 56.8 and 58.0%, respectively, for the "lab-reared diapausing nonblood-fed," "lab-reared diapausing blood-fed nongravid" and the "wild caught" groups. These data provide evidence to support the theory that a significant number of diapausing Cx. pipiens which have taken a prehibernation (possibly viremic) blood meal do not develop eggs and can survive the winter at rates comparable to diapausing nonblood-fed mosquitoes.

Malaria and anemia in antenatal women in Blantyre, Malawi: a twelve-month survey.

Malaria and anemia are common in pregnant African women. We screened 4,764 Malawian women at first antenatal visits for malaria and anemia. A total of 42.7% had a malaria infection, which was more common and of higher density in primigravidae (prevalence = 47.3%, geometric mean = 332 parasites/microl) and teenagers (49.8%, 390/microl) than in multigravidae (40.4%, 214/microl) or older women (40.6%, 227/microl). However, 35% of gravida 3+ women were parasitemic. A total of 57.2% of the women was anemic (hemoglobin < 11 g/dl), with moderate anemia (7.0-8.9 g/dl) in 14.9% and severe anemia (< 7 g/dl) in 3.2%. Prevalences of malaria and anemia were highest in the rainy season. Women with moderate/severe anemia had higher parasite prevalences and densities than women with mild/no anemia. Logistic regression showed that age, season, and trimester of presentation were significantly associated with the prevalence of malaria, but gravidity was not. In this urban setting, age and season are more important than gravidity as predictors of malaria at first antenatal visit, and parasitemia is frequent in women of all gravidities.

Lesions associated with Philometroides huronensis (Nematoda: Philometridae) in the white sucker (Catostomus commersoni).

Lesions associated with Philometroides huronensis in the white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) of southern Ontario occurred during the spring (April-June) and were related to the development and release of first-stage larvae from the gravid nematode. With movement of the subgravid female into the membranous region of the fin, subepidermal tissues were mechanically disrupted and compacted near the nematode. Gravid females were encapsulated by fibrous tissue. Release of first-stage larvae from the gravid nematode was facilitated by a cutaneous opening, disruption of the fibrous capsule and rupture of the nematode. An acute local inflammatory response was associated with this function. Spent nematodes were sequestered and resorbed.

Equine uteroplacental metabolism at mid- and late gestation.

Uptakes of oxygen, glucose and lactate by the gravid uterus, fetus and uteroplacental tissues were measured in chronically catheterized pregnant ponies and their fetuses at mid- and late gestation (term 335 days). Rates of O2 uptake by the gravid uterus, fetus and uteroplacental tissues were significant at both gestational ages and were 2- to 3-fold higher in late gestation than the mid-gestation values of 3338+/-794, 1352+/-258 and 2035 +/- 602 micromol min(-1), respectively (n = 4). Similarly, there were significant uptakes of glucose by the gravid uterus, fetus and uteroplacental tissues at both mid- and late gestation. However, unlike O2 uptake, glucose uptake by the uterus and uteroplacental tissues did not increase between mid- and late gestation. No significant uptakes or outputs of lactate were observed by the uterus or uteroplacental tissues at either gestational age, although there was a significant umbilical uptake of lactate in late but not mid-gestation. There was no change in the distribution of uterine O2 uptake between the fetus and uteroplacental tissues with increasing gestational age. The uteroplacental tissues accounted for about 50 % of the uterine O2 uptake at both gestational ages. In contrast, the proportion of the uterine glucose uptake used by the uteroplacental tissues decreased from 73.2+/-2.1 % (n = 5) at mid-gestation to 61.1+/-1.9 % (n = 4, P<0.02) in late gestation. The gestational changes in uteroplacental carbohydrate metabolism in the mare differ from those seen in the ewe and may have important consequences for the duration and outcome of pregnancy in the mare.

[Prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis in France. Risk assessment. Results and perspectives of prenatal screening and newborn follow up].

In France, a national program for the prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis has been set up 25 years ago. This program is here presented and discussed in details. It is based on a decision tree well defined, with pre and/or per gravidic serological screening with several different tests, completed, if necessary, by ultrasounds examinations of the fetus, biomolecular tests (PCR) on amniotic fluid, and by clinical, biological, and radiological surveillance of neo-nates. The purpose of this prevention program is to: 1/identify nonimmune young women and limit their contamination risk during pregnancy by appropriate counseling on hygiene and diet; 2/screen and treat per gravidic toxoplasmosis as early as possible so as to prevent or limit transmission to the fetus and its consequences. 3/in utero diagnose and treat infestation of the fetus; 4/diagnose and treat asymptomatic congenital toxoplasmosis in neonates, to prevent risks of reactivation and late complications, especially ocular. Such a prevention program has a cost validated by the prevalence of acquired toxoplasmosis in adults in France (over 50% of the population) and by the yearly incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis (at least 0.1% of births according to the best hypothesis). These 6 to 700 congenital toxoplasmosis cases per year may be compared to the 6 to 7,000 per gravidic seroconversions which could lead to fetal contamination if no preventive measures are taken. Nevertheless, as it is often the case in the field of prevention, it is very difficult to statistically assess the efficacy of this program even though several arguments show that it allows to eliminate the most serious toxoplasmosis, sources of serious handicaps at birth, and to limit the frequency of late complications (especially retino-choroiditis) of asymptomatic infections in neonates. The position of European countries varies as to prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis. Some countries (Austria, Belgium) have national prevention programs similar to the French one, whereas others have set up only limited programs or set up no systematic prevention. These differences may be accounted for by the different frequencies of toxoplasmic risk. It seems mandatory to forget all dogmatism and not to stick to a strictly statistical approach for a disease with not only medical but also social and human consequences.

[Maternal serum cytokines in labor, pregnancy and chorioamnionitis].

UNLABELLED: The purpose of our study was to compare maternal serum levels of interleukin-6, interleukin-8, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-gamma in gravidities, during spontaneous term and preterm labor and their relation to histologic chorioamnionitis. METHODS: We investigated 61 women: 10 in preterm labor, 36 in term labor and 15 healthy pregnant nonlabouring controls. Venous bloods for cytokines determinations were obtained during the first stage of labor and during routine screening tests. Titers of cytokines were measured by means of ELISA technique. All births after preterm deliveries were examined to establish histologic chorioamnionitis. RESULTS: Serum levels of IL-6 and IL-8 were significantly elevated both in term (mean: IL-6: 17.5 +/- 58 pg/ml; IL-8: 148 +/- 215 pg/ml) and preterm labor (IL-6: 23 +/- 44 pg/ml; IL-8: 332 +/- 389 pg/ml) when compared to nonlabouring gravidities (IL-6: 5 +/- 7 pg/ml; IL-8: 14 +/- 11 pg/ml). IL-6 and IL-8 titers were statistically similar in term and preterm labors and in patients with and without histologic chorioamnionitis. TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma were not statistically analyzed because only a few patients had detectable serum levels of these cytokines. CONCLUSION: Serum levels of IL-6 and IL-8 in both: term and preterm labor are elevated in comparison to nonlabouring gravidities. The elevated levels of these cytokines are not connected with coexisting chorioamnionitis.

[Morphology of the materno-fetal metabolic barrier in the human placenta].

On chorionic villi of normal human placentas obtained from different aged females morphological studies were made with a view to collecting new data on the molecular structure and material composition of the materno-fetal metabolism barrier. The basement membrane of the chorionic epithelium is characterized by a network of fine collagen filaments arranged parallel to the plane of the membrane and having diameters less than 200 A. Lying between the filament proteins are lipid molecules in the form of bimolecular lamellae, which with their longitudinal axes are oriented approximately vertical to the plane of the membrane and whose thickness is about 40 A. There are many bimolecular lipid layers. In addition, noncollagenic proteins and uronic-acid-free polysaccharides were also found in the epithelial basement membranes. The submicroscopic organization of the endothelial basement membrane of fetal capillaries is different from that of the epithelial basement membrane of chorionic villi. Whereas lipid components disposed vertically to the plane of the membrane and parallelly oriented protein filaments are also present, collagen seems to be nonexistent as is evident from polarization-optical results. Running parallel to the surface of villi and in the apical sections of the plasmodium are protein filaments which are arranged in the form of a network and probably have certain mechanical functions. The structure of the outer membrane is similar to that of the basement membranes because of the presence there in of oriented lipid inclusions. In the region of microvilli and in the outer zone of the plasmoditrophoblast of young placenta there has been found N-acetyl neuraminic acid. The so-called "placental fibrinoid" in the intervillous space is exclusively composed of fibrin. There are no additions of collagen to be found. Therefore, it appears unjustified to use the term "fibrinoid". Glycosaminoglycanes are present in the stroma of villi, and they are oriented in the direction of disposition of collagenous fibers. Their content in the stroma of villi decreases with the progress of gravidity. They are also involved in displacental material transport, although the degree of involvement decreases with the progress of gravidity. Functionally, they show what has been called a "molecular screening effect". The lipid-protein system of the epithelial basement membrane-together with the endothelial basement membrane of fetal vessels in the second half of gravidity-is the principal barrier to the passive passage there-through of substances.

[Immunocompetent lymphoi- cells from pregnant mice studied in the graft-versus-host reaction].

The capacity of lymphoid cells taken from C57BL/6 mice gravid from the CBA males (the second trimester) to induce the graft-versus-host reaction in the hybrids (CBA X C57B/6) F1 was reduced as compared with the cells of the virgin donors and syngeneic gravid mice. This was expressed by the prolonged survival of the experimental recipients and reduced inhibition of endogenous colony formation in the spleen of the sublethally irradiated (500 r) hybrids. At the end of gravidity this capacity was restored, in some instances even exceeding control figures.

Efficacy of four trap types for detecting and monitoring Culex spp. in north central Florida.

The effectiveness of four types of mosquito traps at sampling Culex mosquitoes was compared at two north central Florida study sites (a commercial dairy and a swine research unit) with highly eutrophic lagoons that have a history of producing large populations of Culex mosquitoes. Traps evaluated included a John Hock (JH) model 1012 CDC style light trap, JH model 1712 CDC Gravid Trap (GT), and American Biophysics Corporation's Mosquito Magnet-Experimental (MM-X) and commercial model MM-Professional (MM-Pro) traps. The MM-X and MM-Pro traps are based on new counterflow technology. Culex nigripalpus Theobald and Culex quinquefasciatus Say were the two most abundant species collected, and they were the dominant species at the dairy site and swine research unit, respectively. Culex erraticus Dyar & Knabb and Culex salinarius Coquillett also were caught but in much lower numbers than the two dominant species at the swine unit, and rarely at the dairy site. At the dairy site the MM-Pro collection of total female Cx. quinquefasciatus was significantly greater than all other trap types (MM-Pro > GT > MM-X = CDC), and the MM-Pro also caught the most Cx. nigripalpus, but not significantly more than the CDC or MM-X (MM-Pro = CDC = MM-X > GT). At the swine research unit the largest number of female Cx. quinquefasciatus were caught in the MM-X trap, but the only significant difference was with the CDC trap (MM-X = MM-Pro = CT > CDC). For Cx. nigripalpus the CDC trap caught the most females, but these collections were only significantly different from the MM-Pro and GT (CDC = MM-X > MM-Pro > GT). The GT caught significantly more gravid female Cx. quinquefasciatus than all the other trap types at both sites, but collected very few gravid Cx. nigripalpus at either site.

[The effect of synchronization on estrus and pregnancy in sheep and on levels of thyroxine, triiodothyronine, 17 beta-estradiol, progesterone and cholesterol].

Knowledge of pathogenesis of sexual dysfunctions at altered thyroid activity is limited by the knowledge of multiple and ubiquitous action of its hormones throughout the organism. One of the possibilities of modulatory influence of thyroid hormones on sexual functions can be realized through the participation of thyroxine and triiodothyronine in the synthesis and metabolism of primary substrate of steroid synthesis--cholesterol. The presented work is aimed at the study of simultaneous dynamic changes of concentrations of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), 17 beta-estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4) and cholesterol (Chol) during synchronization of the rutting period and gravidity at parallel correlative evaluation of mutual relations of the followed parameters in ten Merino sheep in the seasonal period. Synchronization was achieved by chlorsuperlutin (Agelin--vaginal swabs, Spofa; 20 mg of chlorsuperlutin/swab) and PMSG (500 I. U./animal). Blood was sampled by means of a jugular vein puncture at the time of swab insertion (-13th day) and after three (-10th day) and seven (-7th day) following days, at the removal of swabs and application of PMSG (-3rd day), on the day of insemination (zero day), on the 7th, 14th and 17th day and in the middle of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th month of gravidity. In the phase of oestrus synchronization a significant increase of E2 concentrations on days -7 and -3 of the experiment (0.47 +/- 0.079 and 0.542 +/- 0.177 nmol.l-1 of serum, P less than 0.001; P less than 0.001) was observed compared to the E2 values on day -13 (0.084 +/- 0.036 nmol.l-1 of serum). Parallel to these observations, marked intermittent changes of T4 (Tab. I, Graph 1) were recorded with the lowest values of this parameter observed on days -10 (41.75 +/- 20.23, P less than 0.05) and -3 (50.22 +/- 18.77, P less than 0.05) and the highest on day -7 (96.77 +/- 17.51 nmol.l-1, P less than 0.01) and day zero (85.40 +/- 19.59 nmol.l-1 of serum, P less than 0.05) in comparison with the -13th day (67.22 +/- 18.29 nmol.l-1 of serum). Concentrations of P4 (Tab. I, Graph 4) declined to the lowest values on day zero observation (0.09 +/- 0.08 nmol.l-1 of serum, P less than 0.05 vs 3.40 +/- 3.61 nmol.l-1 on day -13). No significant changes of concentrations of T3 (Tab. I, Graph 2) and Chol (Tab. I, Graph 5) were observed during oestrus synchronization. During gravidity, concentrations of E2 (Tab. I Graph 3) showed an increasing trend compared to the -13th day.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Histologic and biochemical studies of the uteri of ovariectomized gilts during the first two months of pregnancy after different hormone substitutions. 3. Local effects of the conceptus on the structure of the placenta and its modification by different progesterone and norgestrel administration].

Optical light microscopy was used in investigations of ovariectomised gravid gilts to which progesterone doses between 120 mg and 40 mg as well as 250 micrograms of oestradiol benzoate had been daily applied to preserve gravidity, with 12 mg of norgestrel being additionally administered to some of them. These investigations were conducted for the purpose of studying locally delimited effects of conception on the placental structure. Uterus tissue was sampled from living and dead embryos (centre and sides of ampullae) as well as from uterus regions free of foetal membranes (in-between ampullae). With adequate progesterone supply, embryos were shown to clearly affect the endometrial structures. Endometrium in the centre of ampullae, with living embryos, was lower than at points without embryos. Surface epithelium was flattened, and endometrial stroma was more strongly oedematised. Strongly pronounced hyperaemia occurred to subepithelial stroma in the centre of ampullae, and uterine glandular function was unambiguously stimulated. These embryo-triggered effects were much less or no longer detectable at all under conditions of inadequate progesterone supply (40 mg/die). Administration of 12 mg of norgestrel, in addition to 40 mg/die of progesterone, enabled embryos to exercise gravidity-specific influence upon the endometrium, as in cases of sufficient progesterone supply.

[The fat mobilization syndrome in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus L.)].

Feeding experiments were applied to 82 guinea pigs, different by age, sex, and stage of reproduction, and showed that high-energy feeding and subsequent feed withdrawal could trigger off with high probability a fat mobilising syndrome with clinically manifest ketosis in animals in gravidity and lactation or subclinical ketosis in all non-gravid individuals. High-energy or restrictive feeding alone did not cause in guinea pigs any disease along the lines of gravidity toxicosis. Aspects relating to aetiological and pathogenetic comparability with ruminants are discussed in some detail.

The suprapopulation dynamics of Bothriocephalus acheilognathi in a North Carolina reservoir: abundance, dispersion, and prevalence.

A 2 1/2-year study (September 1980-March 1983) of abundance, dispersion, and prevalence of the pseudophyllidean cestode, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, in 3 species of fish (Gambusia affinis, Notropis lutrensis, and Pimephales promelas) was conducted in 3 ecologically distinct areas of a North Carolina cooling pond. Mean infrapopulation density and prevalence differed by site, season, and species and size of hosts. Degree of aggregation and abundance and prevalence of gravid worms differed by species of host. Abundance of gravid worms was significantly lower in metapopulations from localities that received power plant effluents. The differences in infrapopulation density, prevalence, and aggregation appeared to be related to predator-prey interactions, which varied with season and local community structure. Differences in abundance of gravid worms, on the other hand, were probably caused by differential suitability of hosts and by local variation in selenium concentration in the water column. Thus, it appears that both biotic and abiotic components of the host community determined the suprapopulation dynamics of B. acheilognathi in Belews Lake.

Attractant and stimulant factors for oviposition of Culex pipiens fatigans in natural breeding-sites.

The breeding of mosquito larvae in the field is determined by the ovipositing behaviour of the gravid females. Investigation of the chemical factors that induce oviposition is therefore important for understanding mosquito ecology. These substances may also prove to be useful in assessing and controlling mosquito populations. The author has demonstrated two chemical factors, an ovipositing attractant and an ovipositing stimulant, in surface-water. The ovipositing attractant, extracted from surface-water by distillation and extraction with diethyl ether, was found to be quite effective when used to recapture known numbers of gravid mosquitos released in a large calf-shed. The presence of the stimulant factor was established by forcing gravid females to touch the testing water with tarsi and proboscis. After such contact, they began oviposition three times more rapidly on surface-water than on tap-water.The importance of these factors was demonstrated in the larval populations of Culex pipiens fatigans in pit-latrines in Rangoon, Burma.

[A course of pregnancy with herpes gestationis (author's transl)].

A 24-years old III.-para and III.-gravida was hospitalized in the 36th week of gravidity, with premature labour and distinct symptoms of herpes gestationis. It is reported in literature that the clinical picture of herpes gestationis is combined with a high rate of abortion and fetal anomalies. Therefore an intensive prenatal super vision was carried through with daily cardiotocographic controls and checkings of total estrogens in 24-hours-urine, also measurements of Alpha-Fetoproteins, human placenta lactogen and serumoxytocinase. After inducting labour because of maternal indication the patient gave birth to a healthy female infant (3720 g, 50 cm) with Apgar 10 in the 39th week of gravidity. The investigation of the placenta and all biochemical parameters did not point to an interference of gravidity. The present literature is discussed. Some authors doubt that herpes gestationis is met with a high rate of abortion, stillbirth and fetal anomalies as is assumed till now.

Drugs in pregnancy - a prospective study.

A prospective study starting with 1182 women in the early stage of pregnancy investigated prescribed drug therapy; self-medication; consumption of coffee, cigarettes, and alcohol; and a series of social and sociologic factors. The main results are as follows: compared with international reports, drug consumption during gravidity was low. During the first weeks of gravidity, 11% of the women took drugs. Drug consumption increased during gravidity, reaching a maximum of 26% of the pregnant women taking drugs. Drugs most frequently prescribed were antiemetics, analgesics, sedatives, iron preparations, and vitamins. Self-medication (1 or 2%) was extremely low; in most cases analgesics were used. Coffee consumption declined, particularly during the last trimester; consumption of cigarettes showed a distinct decrease from 27% to 12%.

[Relationship between the activity of alanine aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase in the blood of pregnant women].

The determination of the activity of alkaline phosphatase (AP)--orthophosphate-monoesterphosphohydrolase, EC.3.1.3.1.--and alanine-aminopeptidase (ANA)--alpha-aminoacyl-peptide hydrolase (microsomal), EC.3.4.11.2--in the serum of non-gravid and gravid women has shown that in non-gravid women normal ANA values range from 17.0 to 32.0 I. U. and normal AP values from 14.4 to 26.0 I. U., the ANA/AP quotient amounting to 1.28 (S = +/- 0.301 I. U., KV = 23.5%, n = 29). The determination of the activity of the above quoted enzymes has shown that in the course of pregnancy the values of both enzymes increased by the exponential curve which allowed the calculation of the ANA/AP quotient for each month of pregnancy. The ANA/AP quotient determined in this way is proposed to serve as a diagnostic parameter in the routine control of pregnant women.

[Changes in the acid-base index of blood in dairy cows in relation to the seasonal composition of feed rations and phases of the reproductive cycle].

The changes in the acid-base indices of the blood of dairy cows in different stages of reproduction cycle were studied in relation to the composition of feed ration in the autumn, winter, spring and summer feeding seasons. The cows were in the following stages of their reproduction cycle: Group I the fourth to sixth month of gravidity, II eighth to ninth month of gravidity, III one to two months after calving. The seasonal composition of feed ration was demonstrated to exert a significant influence on the acid-base balance of the blood of cows in the studied stages of reproduction. A considerable occurrence of metabolic acidoses with different levels of compensation was observed when the cows were given the autumn and winter feed rations. Subclinical acid-base disorders of different directions (metabolic and respiratory alkaloses, acidoses) frequently occurred in the green feeding season. The frequency of acid-base disorders as a result of incorrect nutrition was found to be the highest in highly pregnant cows (group II) and in those one to two months after parturition (group III), i. e. in the periods with a significant influence on the reproduction process. On the whole, the best situation as to the acid-base balance was found in cows in the fourth to sixth month of their gravidity, irrespective of the seasonal effect of feed ration.
