A case of a comparatively mild trauma of a lower extremity in an 11-year-old child complicated with deep thrombophlebitis of the thigh and pelvic bone, thromboembolism of the pulmonary artery branches, sepsis, and massive systemic fat embolism is described. The development of fat embolism in combination with thromboembolic complications in the absence of injuries of the skeleton and fat tissue may be explained from the standpoint of physico-chemical theory of pathogenesis of fat embolism. A close correlation between fat embolism and the system of blood coagulation was noted.

The authors have studied experimentally changes in the lung in gunshot injuries of the upper abdomen. A temporary pulsating cavity, that is formed at the moment of injury, renders a damaging effect on the pulmonary tissue, thus contributing to the development of postcontusion pneumonia.
We studied the occurrence of "bone bruises" of the knee resulting from dashboard impaction and detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We chose 21 knees of 20 front seat occupants in head-on motor vehicle collisions. To ensure all knees had received a significant axial load, patients selected had ipsilateral posterior hip dislocations and/or posterior wall acetabular fractures. Anteroposterior and lateral knee radiographs were negative for fracture in all cases. T1-weighted axial and sagittal MRI of each knee with a 1.5-T magnetron scanner revealed signal changes consistent with subchondral microfracture or bone bruise in 8 of the 21 knees. Previous cadaveric, animal, and MRI studies have suggested that such changes may be precursors of posttraumatic osteoarthritis. With the increasing incidence of serious lower extremity injury as a result of motor vehicle accidents, these occult injuries may significantly affect individuals and society.
The autor describes a case of compression syndrom of the ulnar nerve at the elbow after a blow-injury. At the operation the nerve presented a considerable fibro-lipomatous intraneural hypertrophy with extention over almost the whole length of the extremity. Furthermore, a similar case of the deep branch of the radial nerve is mentioned, presenting the same pathological condition. Till now, only cases affecting the median nerve, have been described in the world literature.
