[The formation of an adaptive response in children exposed to the effect of low doses of radiation as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

The ability of lymphocytes to form an adaptive response in cells of the children which were exposed to small radiation doses during the Chernobyl accident was studied by hydroxyapatite chromatography of cell lysates. Ten children living in the area with high radiation level (Bryansk region) and seventeen children living in the area with natural radiation level (Bryansk region too) were examined. No difference in cell ability to form adaptive response was found in both children group.

[The micronucleus frequency in the somatic cells of murine rodents residing in a 30-kilometer area of the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

The chromosome aberration frequency in murine somatic cells was studied. Animals from natural populations as well as laboratory mice exposed within the ten-kilometers zone of the Chernobyl accident were examined. Increase in micronuclei rate in bone marrow cells, erythrocytes of peripheral blood and hepatocytes was found in animals exposed to more high background radiation. Under chronic exposure the pattern of effect dependence on dose rate was similar both in somatic and sex cells.

[The dose dependence of the induction of chromosome aberrations in those who worked in the cleanup of the Chernobyl accident].

The method of biological dosimetry based on registration of frequency of chromosome aberrations in peripheral lymphocytes was proven to be a valuable technique for estimation of large absorbed doses. In the case of low absorbed doses or low dose rate the suitability of this method is restricted because of deficiency of suitable dose-response curve for yield of chromosome aberrations. In this work chromosome aberration rate was estimated in 31 ameliorators of the Chernobyl accident with the known data of physical dosimetry in the range of 12-30 cGy. Linear dependence of induction of chromosome aberrations was found in this dose range. The coefficients for induction of dicentrics and all unstable aberrations of chromosome type was found to be 1.4 +/- 0.4 and 7.2 +/- 1.2 per 100 cells per 1 Gy, respectively.

[An ecological and geographical test of the seed offspring of Viola matutina Klok. from a 30-kilometer area of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

The generation of seeds of two populations of Viola matutina Klok. sampled from plants growing within the thirty-kilometers zone of the Chernobyl accident (the reproduction of seeds in 1988) was investigated in the north nursery in Syktyvkar. The decrease of sterile pollen and embryonic lethality among the plants from the strongly contaminated site (exposure rate (1075-1434) pC/(kg.s) May 1987) was registered. It is suggested that this phenomenon is the result of the elimination of genetic damages in the course of seed forming in this population under radiation stress.

[The rehabilitation of participants in the cleanup of the sequelae of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station with borderline mental disorders].

Among ecological disasters the aftermath of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP present an undoubted chronic anthropogenic stress situation. Psychological stress is manifested by somatic, predominantly vasovegetative disorders, as well as by pre-nosological and clinical forms of mental disorders. Phasing and reconstructive principle forms a basis for the organizational and structural activity of specialized psychoneurological institutions dealing with rehabilitation and readaptation of the participants in the elimination of the ChNPP accident aftereffects.

Acute and long-term effects of irradiation on pine (Pinus silvestris) strands post-Chernobyl.

The effect of ionizing irradiation on the viability of pine stands after the fallout from the damaged nuclear energy plant at Chernobyl (ChNPP) was shown within the territory of the 10-km zone. During the period 1986-1991, irradiated and damaged forest stands, so-called 'red forest', located in this area were systematically classified by observation. Mortality rate, re-establishment, development of tree canopies, reproduction anomalies and stand viability were shown to be dependent on absorbed irradiation dose, on the age of the stand and on forest composition. For pine stands in the acutely affected zone, doses of more than 60 Gy resulted in a massive mortality and no regeneration of pine trees since 1987. The injured trees had burned or had dried-up. The drying process was accelerated by a massive production of pathogenic insects invading the dying trees. Specifically, irradiation doses of 10-60 Gy, 1-10 Gy and 0.1-1 Gy caused high, medium and low injury to the forest stands, respectively. Doses of less than 0.1 Gy did not cause any visible damage to the trees. In 1987, repair processes were displayed by the tree canopies and practically the entire viability of the forest stands had recovered except for trees in the acute and highly affected zones. The young forest was reestablished in the same place as the perished trees and new pine saplings were planted on the reclaimed areas.

Cytogenetic characteristics of Chironomus balatonicus Devai, Wülker, Scholl (Diptera, Chironomidae) from the Chernobyl region.

A cytogenetic analysis was carried out on a population of Chironomus balatonicus (Chironomidae, Diptera) from Chernobyl, a highly radioactive area of the Kiev region. Several chromosomal aberrations were established unique to a population of Chironomus balatonicus living in an area contaminated by radioactive waste. Five new heterozygous inversions, deficiencies in arms C, D, E, F and chromatid breaks were found in the irradiated population but not in nonirradiated populations. A pericentric inversion in chromosome AB occurred at a relatively high frequency. Genome aberrations expressed by a heterochromatized 'B' chromosome were evident. In the irradiated and nonirradiated populations common inversions occurred showing variation in their frequency depending on specific environmental conditions. The somatic and also the germ cells were characterized by a number of heteropycnotic nuclei and vacuolized chromosomes. Both the somatic and germ cells showed changes in the structural and functional organization of heterochromatin and this was particularly marked in the telomeric sectors of the chromosomes. The heterochromatin which is extremely sensitive to radioactivity appears to protect euchromatin from adverse environmental conditions.

[Prophylaxis of radiation-induced thyroid cancers in children after the reactor catastrophy of Chernobyl].

The incidence of thyroid cancer in children living in heavily contaminated regions some 100 km away from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has increased significantly between 1989 and 1993. On the basis of this observation, preparations for iodine blockage of the thyroid in cases of reactor accidents should be made not only near but also far from nuclear power plants. The WHO recommendations on age-related dosage should be followed; the total iodide dose ranging between 15 and 150 mg daily may be split into several portions. In addition, prophylaxis of iodine-deficient goiters with 50-200 micrograms of iodide daily leads to a significant reduction of the risk of radiation-induced cancers. Consequent elimination of alimentary iodine deficiency should therefore be considered as the basis of precautions against health affects of reactor accidents. Thyroid hormones are indicated only in cases of thyroid enlargement, provided that lesions suspicious for malignancy have been definitely excluded. In the case of thyroid nodules in childhood, the indication for surgery and histological verification of the lesion has to be taken generously.

[The mental and neurological health status of the pediatric population in some regions of Ukraine after the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

Psychic, neurological and speech characteristics were studied in a comparative epidemiological survey of 910 schoolchildren aged 6-7 and 11-12. Of them 470 children lived in the Zhitomir region which had suffered radioactive contamination after the Chernobyl accident, 440 children lived in the Kharkov region which had not been exposed to radionuclide contamination. It was established that 74-79% of the children examined had borderline psychic, neurological or speech disorders. The children from the "clear" territories had more serious disturbances which say about the role of other ecological hazards in development of large-scale prevalence of borderline neuropsychic pediatric conditions. The radiation-exposed children received adequate treatment which produced positive shifts in their health.

[Epidemiologic registry of leukemia and other hemoblastoses in Briansk region as an instrument of investigation of consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant].

Beginning from 1986, at Hematological Research Centre (HRC) epidemiological monitoring has been performed on hemoblastoses in Bryansky district, which suffered from the Chernobyl accident more than any other area of Russia. The collection of personal information is organized about each case of disease from all possible sources, diagnosis verification, computer control, storage and analysis of materials. A specialized Register of Blood diseases is created, including demographical and ecological files. Retrospective period of monitoring 1979-1985, afteraccident period-from 1986. In the register 2832 cases were accumulated of hemoblastoses up to 1993. Regions are selected for monitoring with high levels of contamination by 137Cs (15 Ci/sq.km and more), and area for comparison--the other 21 regions of the district. The comparison did not reveal substantial differences. Further epidemiological analysis must be performed. Taking into account dose loads, special studies are initiated.

[The microbiocenosis of the large intestine in animals with constant radiation exposure in the area of the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

State of microbiocenosis of large intestine in rats and furo subjected to constant combined irradiation has been studied in full-scale experiments in the emergency rooms of the Chernobyl NPP and in the nearest zone of its effect. The higher diversity of microflora (as compared to initial one), sharp increase of the amount of Candida genus fungi, a decrease of the number of bifidobacteria and increase of the amount of conditionally pathogenic flora were observed in rats with the dose of external irradiation of 1.43 Gr absorbed for 14 days. The expressed associative character of disbioses is distinctly traced. In furo affected by the radion exceeding the background level feeding with products contaminated by radionuclides leads to changes whose individual character corresponds to the picture of disbiosis under radiation injury.

[Results of cytogenetic screening of people employed in liquidation of accident consequences at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in 5 years].

The liquidators of Chernobyl power station accident consequences were subjected to cytogenetic examination in 5 years after the accident. The analysis included a routine method of peripheral blood lymphocyte culture. The exposed and reference groups turned out to differ in the occurrence of distorted cells and chromosomal aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes. The highest cytopathogenic effect was seen in those, who had been working at the station in May-June 1986. The authors suggest to form the groups at high risk on the base of cytogenetic data and subject the groups to thorough examination for various diseases including malignancies.

[Sanatorium-health resort care in the system of medical service to the population exposed to radiation as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

The analysis of the reports made by 77 local medical administrations in the Russian Federation indicates unsatisfactory employment of sanatorium facilities for improving health of radiation-exposed population. Health resorts and sanatoria of the Russian Middle Zone should extend care for those who suffer from the Chernobyl accident aftereffects.

[Cesium-137 residues in food and in persons in areas severely contaminated by the Chernobyl power station accident].

On April 26, 1986, the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, in the Ukraine, of the former Soviet Union, exploded. Since March in 1991, a group including the author has been performed medical surveys and provided assistance centered mainly in Gomel district of the Republic of Belarus, which contains many severely contaminated areas due to fallout. Ultra sound scanning was performed by the Shinshu University School of Medicine Second Department of surgery on thyroid glands of children in Chechersk region, of Gomel. Twenty-one persons, each with tuberculous echogenic dots in their thyroid glands, were brought to Japan for further examination. The 137Cs residue was measured in these 21 persons, using a whole-body counter (WBC). Subsequently 137Cs was also measured in a range of food items found in the city in which they live. These studies indicate that, although the children live in the same area, differences in life style and in food intake are reflected in the amount of cesium residue in their bodies.

[Radiosensitivity of erythropoietic stem cells (from the data on the aftereffects of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

The radiosensibility of erythropoietic tissue cells was estimated on the basis of analysis of erythrocyte and reticulocyte quantity changes in peripheral blood of the victims of the disaster on the Chernobyl NPP. The radiosensibility of blood cells was evaluated in accordance with their maturity (committed, committed-and-maturing and maturing pools). The population of erythropoietic tissue cells can be divided into two groups on the criterion of their radiosensibility. The first group demonstrates the highest level of radiosensibility varying from 0.5 to 1.73 Gy (n = 1). It includes the cells from primarily committed to basophilic normoblasts. The other group consisting of polychromatophils and oxyphils is more radioresistent. Do of these groups corresponds to their maturity and ascends from 4.7 to 12.9 Gy.

[The state of classical and alternative complement activation pathways in persons who participated in the cleanup of the aftereffects of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Power Plant].

The levels of T-cell activation through classical and alternative pathways were studied in persons participated in cleaning-up operations at Chernobyl N. P. P. Proliferation response of T-cells on the action of monoclonal antibody anti-CD3 (classical activation) as well as response on phytohaemagglutinin was partially decreased just as response on autologic erythrocytes in combination with phorbol 12-myristate-13 acetate (CD2-dependent alternative activation) was completely suppressed in all affected persons. Addition of interleukin 2 did not restore T-cell responses on both anti-CD3 and alternative stimulation. The different degree of decrease of T-cell responses on anti-CD3 and CD2-dependent alternative stimulation is not a result of respective alterations of cell surface CD3 and CD2 expression.

[Cytogenetic analysis of first two mitoses in the root meristem of stored for a prolonged time period Crepis tectorum seeds subjected to chronic irradiation in the 30-kilometer zone of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Power Plant].

Seeds of Crepis tectorum natural populations 1 and 3 subjected to chronic irradiation in 1986 during 4 months in 30-kilometers zone of Chernobyl were stored for 6 years in a laboratory. In 1993 a method of continuous germination of seeds in 0.01% colchicin solution was used and an analysis of chromosome aberrations in the first tetraploid cells was made as it was done in 1987 just after finishing of a dormant period of seeds. By extrapolation from the data obtained by studying cells of the second colchicine mitosis to the cells of the previous mitosis from which they derived it was shown that the frequency of chromatid type aberrations in the early dividing cells after 6 year storage remained at the level which was observed just after finishing of a dormant period. This fact supports our previous proposition that chromatid aberrations observed in early dividing cells were probably induced by the incorporated long term radioactive products during seed germination, but not during seed storage.
