Complex associations between alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, eating habits and physical exercise are explored. Data from the 1985 German Cardiovascular Prevention Study are used to explore associations between these behaviours, separate for young men (n = 561) and young women (n = 509) between 25 to 34 years of age. Analyses concern three forms of associations: 1. associations between different categories of single health behaviours; 2. associations between various health behaviours, and 3. associations between health behaviours, and their social determinants. Contingency tables, cluster analyses and logistic regression analyses are applied. Cluster analyses identified subgroups with particular health behaviour patterns. One distinct pattern, similarly among men and women, was typified by increased physical exercise, less smoking and increased beer consumption. For young men, results from regression analyses showed significant effects of higher income and positive health attitudes on belonging to this distinct cluster. For young women cluster membership was significantly correlated with higher education and positive health attitudes. Results of the statistical analyses demonstrate the usefulness of a multi-methods approach in studying complex behaviour patterns. Finally the relevance of the present findings for future studies and applications is indicated.

OBJECTIVE: Health behaviours are often explained as being determined by health knowledge, occupation, education and income. Yet, in increasingly individualized societies individuals are brought to develop personal strategies of orientation and behaviours, the later being detached from traditional status or class membership. The present study (secondary analysis) explores to what extent health behaviours are more or less individualized or still linked to social living conditions. METHODS: Eating behaviours and social status are based on a 2001 questionnaire survey among 393 randomly selected adolescents from the city of Leipzig, Germany. RESULTS: The findings show a distinct social patterning of eating behaviours. Those patterns can be explained as part of adolescents' lifestyles. Findings also indicate that the patterns of eating behaviours are strongly linked to the social background of those adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that for adolescents raised in deprived social conditions it is more difficult to develop health preferences conducive for health promoting behaviours.

Female rats were exposed to mild stress throughout pregnancy and the offspring tested at 60 days of age. In an open field test the prenatal stress group showed increased locomotion and increased rearing compared to control rats confirming that the prenatal stress treatment was sufficient to produce persistent behavioural changes in the offspring. The prenatal stress offspring also showed an increased behavioural response to injections of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (wet-dog shakes) and an enhanced 5-HT syndrome following treatment with the 5-HT agonist 5-methoxy-N,N- dimethyltryptamine. These results provide further evidence that maternal stress produces long-lasting changes in the functioning of central 5-HT neurons in the offspring.
