[Detecting patients at higher suicidal risk by psychological criteria].

On the basis of an experimental psychological analysis of the personality features in patients with suicidal tendencies the conclusion is made that an important role in the decision to commit suicide (84%) is allocated to such forms of thinking as unisignificant subjective models, a nonrepresentation in their development, a full negation in thinking, a selective perception of information. In 16% of the cases there was a drop in a very important adaptive function such as imagination. The detected features help to select patients with a high suicidal risk and consequently pose specific problems in psychotherpay.

An analysis of the interpersonal perceptions of adolescents.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the concerns, needs, and other characteristics of interpersonal relationships of adolescents as reflected in the stories they write in response to a stimulus provided in the instrument developed by the author. The second objective is to investigate the main sources of influence on the interpersonal perceptions of adolescents. The subjects are 655 adolescents in Virginia; 43% are public high school students attending grades 9 through 12; and 57% are residents of reformatory facilities, ages 15-18. A comparison of these two groups regarding the types and frequency of themes elicited is made. The themes also are analyzed by sex and race. Content analysis indicates that the predominant themes are affiliation (family and friendship), aggression, achievement (sports), and drugs. As to the sources of influence, "personal experience" ranked highest, followed by "from my mind and my imagination," while "TV" and "books" ranked third and fourth with similar percentages.

Experimental research into the changes in the way sexuality is experienced by the infertile woman.

An investigation was made on women afflicted by primary infertility with a view to ascertaining their ways of experiencing sexuality. The tools used were a questionnaire and some Murray T.A.T. tables. An analysis of the results has pointed out the existence of significant changes in sexuality with regard to decreased frequency of sexual intercourse. This change is meaningfully correlated with their socio-cultural level.

[Role of psychological factors in socio-occupational adaptation of patients with slowly-progressing schizophrenia].

The author studied relations between spontaneous social and working adaptation of patients with slow-progressing schizophrenia (the astheno-depressive and astheno-hypochondriacal syndromes) and their cognitive peculiarities and system of relations with the surrounding world, people, and themselves. Integral characteristics of the personalities of patients with successful and unsuccessful social and working adaptation are described. It was found that the successful adaptation of patients was based on value orientations characterized by a general compensatory direction at adequately evaluated personal and social difficulties with a high degree of observing social norms. As the adaptation becomes less and less successful, the part of adequate evaluations and relations determining the patient's self-estimation diminishes, the role of egocentric tendencies and purposes, and primitive requirements gets greater. The data obtained may be used for individual forecasting of the social and working adaptation of patients with slow-progressing schizophrenia and the tactics of psychic correction of their condition.

[Psychological methodologic procedures for detecting and evaluating the work orientation of schizophrenic patients].

The paper is concerned with a description of a complex of psychological methods in detecting and assessing labour orientation of schizophrenic patients. The use of these approaches in experimental psychological examination in 58 schizophrenic patients permitted to distinguish the existence of preserved, disturbed labour orientation, as well as their complete absence in different forms and variants in the development of the schizophrenic process. The found criteria of different types of labor orientation may facilitate a better prognosis in the socio-labor readaptation of schizophrenic patients.

[The characteristics of the speech tempo in patients with panic attacks].

It is known that excessive level of anxiety is able to modify essentially parameters of speech, including its temporal characteristics. In this respect the study of speech parameters during paroxysmal anxious states seems to be promising. Panic attacks (PA) are a classical clinical model of paroxysmal anxiety disorders. It is advantageous to approach this problem from the viewpoint of functional neurology, studying the dynamics of speech in different functional states, i. e., rest, emotional stress, deprivation etc. Analysis of parameters of rate of speech (mean duration of clear speech, mean duration of pauses, rate of articulation) was chosen as the main approach to assessment of peculiarities of speech. It was shown that temporal speech characteristics of PA patients were specific for estimation of different functional states, demonstrating changes sometimes in the same or in different directions. The results obtained point to high resolution of the method and offer promise for further study of temporal characteristics of speech in patients with paroxysmal disorders.

[Personality characteristics of pilots and navigators].

One of the pathways of improving the psychological selection of the flying personnel is to study properties of the personality responsible for flying tasks. It is important to form an ideal of personality properties of the pilot and navigator. With this purpose a special set of psychological methods allowing a comprehensive study of the personality was used. The results helped to identify personality properties typical of pilots and navigators and to suggest that high achievements in the professional activity of pilots and navigators are associated with their personality characteristics and correct selection of the flying specialty.

Assessment of attention deficit disorder using a thematic apperception technique.

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (AD-HD) is regarded as being relatively common among school-age children, but the literature reveals a number of confounding factors with standard assessment techniques of the disorder. Using a structured thematic apperception technique (the Tell-Me-A-Story [TEMAS] test) to measure attention to pictorial stimuli depicting characters, events, settings, and covert psychological conflicts, a study was conducted with 152 normal and 95 clinical Hispanic, Black, and White school-age children. Results reveal that the AD-HD children are significantly more likely than normal children to omit information in the stimuli about characters, events, settings, and psychological conflicts. Differences between the groups are large and persistent in the presence of structured inquiries by the test examiners. Results suggest the potential utility of structured thematic apperception techniques for the assessment of AD-HD, eventually to facilitate DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association, 1987) diagnosis, but also to invite closer scrutiny in carefully controlled validity studies.

Clinical utility of the TEMAS with nonminority children.

The Tell Me a Story (TEMAS) Test is a thematic apperception technique composed of 23 chromatic pictures, depicting either minority or nonminority characters interacting in primarily urban and familial settings, and is scored for perceptual and cognitive style, affective state, and personality functioning. Previous research has supported the reliability and validity of the ethnic minority version of the TEMAS test for Hispanic and Black children and adolescents. In this study, we investigated the validity of the nonminority version by discriminating public school (n = 49) and outpatient (n = 36) samples of White examinees from inner city, low to lower middle socioeconomic status, largely female-headed households. Results indicate that TEMAS profiles significantly discriminated between the normal functioning and clinical groups (p < .001), with 86% classification accuracy. The results, which provide some support for the general clinical utility of the TEMAS technique, are discussed in terms of the need to develop and validate unbiased projective techniques for both ethnic minority and nonminority children.

The relations of thematic and nonthematic childhood depression measures to defensiveness and gender.

The susceptibility of self-report and thematic measures of depression to the effects of a defensive test-taking approach was assessed among 44 child and adolescent psychiatric inpatients. It was hypothesized that scores on a measure of defensiveness would be associated with self-reported but not thematic measures of depression, and furthermore, that this finding would be more pronounced for girls than boys. Patients completed the Lie Scale of the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), and the Roberts Apperception Test for Children. As predicted, RCMAS-Lie scores were significantly associated with CDI but not Roberts Depression scores, and this effect was more pronounced among females, primarily due to the high CDI scores of nondefensive girls. Implications of results for psychological assessment of children and adolescents are discussed.

[Content analysis of the Cognitive Screening Test (CST14)].

The factorial structure of the CST14 was analysed and its relationship with several tests of cognitive function examined. Participants were 106 consecutive attendants of a psychogeriatric day care centre (75 women, 31 men). Their mean age was 77.7 (SD = 6.4). Factor analysis of CST14-scores revealed four principal components accounting for 66% of the explanatory variance. The factors reflected knowledge of current and last queen, orientation to date, day, age and time of day, date of birth, and home address. A stepwise regression model including measures of episodic recall, episodic recognition, confrontation naming and category fluency explained 55% of the variance in CST-scores. No explanatory variance was left for measures of visual and visuospatial perception (thematic apperception and clock reading). Dissociations between items of the CST may reveal individual profiles of impaired and relatively intact cognitive functions, such as preserved episodic memory (orientation to date) in aphasic patients.
