Involvement. Senior citizens' recreational activities.

During the last 18 years, senior citizens in Viborg, Denmark, have participated in study circles based on the theory of impression pedagogy and socially relevant activities. They arrange excursions at home and abroad and make films about the trips. They teach schoolchildren, students at folk high schools, and nurses, as well as occupational therapists and physiotherapists. They publish poems and books, write role plays, stage musicals, sing in choirs, and function as tour guides in town. They set up educational color slide programmes on preventing bone fractures, dealing with the problem of reduced hearing, and the importance of healthy food and exercise. They travel abroad and talk about Denmark and the conditions for senior citizens in our country. With the support of the Danish Ministry for Social Affairs, they produce videos about their activities as a source of inspiration to others. The use of drugs by the participants in the study circles has declined, while the level of activities has increased, and none of the participants has ever had to enter residential care.

A survey of running injuries in 1505 competitive and recreational runners.

A 33 item multiple choice questionnaire was circulated; completed questionnaires from 1505 runners (1130 male and 375 female) were obtained. Questions focused upon training, injuries sustained, and medical care. Biomechanical imbalances such as leg length inequality appear to be a major contributing factor to running injuries. Correction of an underlying biomechanical defect may be important in the treatment of many running injuries. Female runners were found to be more susceptible than males to stress fractures at higher mileages. The cause of this increased incidence may be attributable to lower bone mineral density levels as a result of hormonal factors. Factors such as running surface, age and stretching techniques do not appear to play a significant part in the pathogenesis of running injuries.

[Methodologic approaches to assessing the noise level of health resorts and places of mass recreation of the population].

Methodological approaches to the assessment of noise regime at health resorts and places of rest of the population were set forth when carrying out preventive and current sanitary surveillance. The sources governing the noise regime of health resorts and places of rest were identified, and the problems of zone arrangement of places of rest according to its type (long-term or short-term) analysed. Permissible noise levels were given for various functional zones and the measures for normalization of noise regime proposed.
