Maternal rubella and the congenital rubella syndrome.

The major goal of rubella immunization is the prevention of the congenital rubella syndrome. As many as 20 per cent of women in the reproductive age group in the United States continue to be susceptible to rubella despite the immunization programs currently in place. Intensified efforts are therefore needed to identify persons at risk for infection and to vaccinate them. Women who develop a rubella-like illness during pregnancy should have the diagnosis confirmed serologically because a diagnosis based on clinical criteria alone is unreliable and because of the serious implications of gestational rubella infection. The rubella virus can infect the fetus at any stage of pregnancy, but defects are rarely noted when this occurs after the 16th week of gestation. The most common abnormalities in the congenital rubella syndrome are hearing loss, mental retardation, cardiac malformations, and eye defects. Diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, glaucoma, and other delayed manifestations of congenital rubella syndrome are common, thereby necessitating long-term followup of these patients. The detection of rubella-specific IgM antibodies in fetal blood is helpful in establishing the diagnosis prenatally and can aid in the management of pregnancies complicated by this infection. Susceptible women identified through screening during pregnancy should be immunized in the immediate postpartum or postabortion period. Although the live, attenuated rubella vaccine is contraindicated during pregnancy, pregnant women who are inadvertently immunized are not candidates for pregnancy termination because no defects consistent with congenital rubella have been reported to date in the offspring of other similarly vaccinated women.

Apoptosis-associated gene expression in the corpus luteum of the rat.

The involution of the corpus luteum (CL) at parturition is an example of physiological apoptosis, a complex process involving massive vascular regression while luteal cells undergo apoptosis. In the present study, changes in gene expression associated with physiological apoptosis were examined. Three genes isolated in our laboratory because of their association with apoptotic processes in the ovary, mammary gland, and prostate served as the focus of our investigation: Y81, Gas-1, and the gene IAP encoding integrin-associated protein. Y81 is a novel gene for which three transcripts are apparent. A Y81 cDNA clone representing the longest transcript has been isolated; it shows an open reading frame exhibiting a region of very high homology with members of the frizzled family, the prototypes of which are cell autonomous polarity genes encoding seven-pass transmembrane receptor proteins, for example the receptor for Wingless. Gas-1 is known as a growth-arrest gene that inhibits DNA synthesis when microinjected into cells. Integrin-associated protein is a beta 3-integrin-binding protein for which, recently, a thrombo-spondin-binding activity has been recognized. These three genes, all sharply up-regulated in the course of physiological involution processes in the ovarian CL, in mammary gland, and in prostate, seem promising candidates-by virtue of their specific expression in distinct tissues undergoing programmed cell death-as mediators of stimuli leading to apoptosis and subsequent phagocytosis. In this study, sulfated glycoprotein-2, previously observed in many instances of physiological apoptosis, was further employed as an indicator for incipient apoptosis, and stromelysin was followed as a marker for the tissue remodeling activity that is intimately associated with apoptosis during involution.

The proximate determinants of the decline to below-replacement fertility in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Between 1990 and 2000, the total fertility rate (TFR) in Ethiopia declined moderately from 6.4 to 5.9 children per woman of reproductive age. During the same period, the TFR in the capital city of Addis Ababa declined from 3.1 to 1.9 children per woman. Even more striking than the magnitude of this decline is that it occurred in the absence of a strong and effective national family planning program. In this study, the components of this fertility decline are identified using the Bongaarts framework of the proximate determinants of fertility. The results of a decomposition analysis indicate that a decrease in the age-specific proportions of women who are married, followed by an increase in contraceptive use are the most important mechanisms by which fertility has declined in Addis Ababa. Poor employment prospects and relatively high housing costs are likely factors that encourage couples to delay marriage and reduce marital fertility.

Maternal exposure to the antiepileptic drug vigabatrin affects postnatal development in the rat.

The objective was to investigate, in the rat, the effects of maternal exposure to vigabatrin (VGB) on the postnatal motor-cognitive behaviour of the offspring. We used an experimental evaluator-blind, placebo-controlled study in the rat. Ten pregnant rats were divided into five groups and treated with different doses of VGB (250, 500, 750, 1000 mg/kg/day) or placebo from gestation day (GD) 6 to GD10. After delivery, 56 pups (40 pups prenatally exposed to VGB and 16 pups exposed to placebo) were evaluated for motor-cognitive behaviour throughout postpartum day 40. At the end of testing sessions the animals were sacrificed and brain tissues processed for biochemical analysis of GABA levels. Body weight of pups and young rats whose mothers were treated with a dose of 750 mg/kg/day were significantly lower both at birth and during the whole postnatal life with respect to the control groups. Young rats of this group exhibited impaired performance in both the open-field and water maze tasks. Brain GABA contents were dramatically increased in this group of rats. No other significant nutritional, biochemical or behavioural changes were observed after treatments with doses of VGB lower than 750 mg/kg/day. The exposure to a dose of 1000 mg/kg caused abortion. Maternal exposure to VGB at relatively high doses (750 mg/kg/day) is likely to cause some important changes of the nutritional status during the pre- and postnatal life. Thus, the biochemical and cognitive abnormalities observed in this study could be related to some disturbances of brain development induced by malnutrition and/or to a disturbance of neuronal programming of the gabaergic system.

Effects of glucocorticoids on Fas gene expression in bovine blood neutrophils.

Blood neutrophils are extremely short-lived cells that are programmed for rapid apoptosis after differentiation in bone marrow. Recently, glucocorticoids have been shown to prolong survival of human and rodent neutrophils, but the mechanisms and implications for leukocyte homeostasis and health are unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoids on Fas expression in bovine neutrophils because Fas is a major death receptor that stimulates apoptosis in circulating cells. Our study subjects were four periparturient dairy cows whose blood concentrations of cortisol peaked at calving, 15 dexamethasone-treated steers and three untreated steers whose neutrophils were exposed to dexamethasone in vitro. Fas mRNA abundance changes in collected neutrophils were monitored numerous times relative to the in vivo glucocorticoid challenges, and the relationships between these data and circulating neutrophil counts were estimated by correlation analyses. Fas mRNA and protein abundance, caspase 8 activity, and survival of neutrophils in vitro were also monitored in the presence and absence of dexamethasone. In the periparturient cows, Fas mRNA abundance in circulating neutrophils showed a sharp decrease between calving and 12 h postpartum. Based on PROC CORR analysis (SAS), this correlated negatively with blood neutrophil count (r=-0.634; P=0.0009) and serum cortisol concentration (r=-0.659; P<0.0001), but showed no relationship with serum progesterone or estradiol concentrations (P > or =0.09). Administration of dexamethasone to steers also caused a pronounced reduction in neutrophil Fas mRNA abundance that persisted for 12 h and correlated negatively with blood neutrophil count (r=-0.748; P=0.0021). In vitro, dexamethasone caused dose-dependent loss of GR proteins from the cytosol of neutrophils concurrently with Fas mRNA downregulation, which was inhibited by the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) antagonist, RU486. Dexamethasone treatment of cultured neutrophils also reduced surface Fas expression, spontaneous and sFasL-induced caspase 8 activity, and rate of apoptosis in the cells. Taken together, these in vivo and in vitro results suggest that glucocorticoids inhibit Fas expression in bovine blood neutrophils via GR activation, possibly contributing to the cells' increased longevity in culture and the pronounced neutrophilia observed in parturient cows and hormone-treated steers. We thus conclude that glucocorticoid-activated GR may change the homeostasis of circulating neutrophils, in part through its negative effects on Fas gene expression and downstream apoptosis signaling pathways.

Racial/ethnic differences in the decision to breastfeed among adolescent mothers.

OBJECTIVE: To identify racial/ethnic differences in prevalence and the factors that influence decisions to breastfeed among adolescent mothers. METHODS: A total of 696 Mexican-American, African-American, and Caucasian adolescent mothers </=18 years of age were interviewed on the postpartum ward of university hospital within 48 hours of delivery. Self-reported factors associated with the decision to breastfeed were assessed. RESULTS: The decision to breastfeed was reported by 55% of Mexican-American, 45% of Caucasian, and 15% of African-American adolescent mothers. With the exception of perceived benefits of breastfeeding and exposure to educational materials, most factors associated with breastfeeding differed by race/ethnicity. Among Mexican-Americans, important factors included having relied on feeding advice (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 7.6); the feeding preference of a partner (AOR = 7.0) or mother (AOR = 6. 6); and feeding decisions made in early pregnancy (AOR = 4.7). Among African-Americans, important factors included living with a partner (AOR = 10.6); having a mother who breastfed (AOR = 5.9); the feeding preference of a partner (AOR = 5.6) or health care provider (AOR = 4. 7); and low family support (AOR = 3.4). Among Caucasians, health care providers' feeding preference (AOR = 6.1); having two or more breastfeeding role models (AOR = 4.1); not being enrolled in Women, Infants, and Children's Supplemental Nutrition Program (AOR = 3.0); having relied on infant-feeding advice (AOR = 3.0); and prenatal alcohol use (AOR = 2.6) were associated with the decision to breastfeed. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence and influences to breastfeed differ by patient race/ethnicity. We speculate that targeting the adolescent mother and members of her support system, educating them before and during pregnancy, and stressing benefits of this method while eliminating misinformation, especially among African-Americans, may be important intervention strategies to promote breastfeeding.

Molecular cloning of MSRG-11 gene related to apoptosis of mouse spermatogenic cells.

Beginning with a new contig of the expressed sequence tags (Mm.63892) obtained by comparing testis libraries with other tissue and cell line libraries using the digital differential display program, we cloned a new gene which is related to the apoptosis of mouse spermatogenic cells using the Genscan program and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. The sequence data have been submitted to the GenBank database under accession number AY747687. The full cDNA length is 1074 bp, and the gene with 7 exons and 6 introns is located in mouse chromosome 1 H5. The protein is recognized as a new member of calmodulin (CaM) binding protein family because the sequence contains three short calmodulin-binding motifs containing conserved Ile and Gln residues (IQ motif) and is considered to play a critical role in interactions of IQ motif-containing proteins with CaM proteins. The putative protein encoded by this gene has 192 amino acid residues with a theoretical molecular mass of 23.7 kDa and a calculated isoelectric point of 9.71. The sequence shares no significant homology with any known protein in databases. RT-PCR and Northern blot analyses revealed that 1.3 kb MSRG-11 transcript was strongly expressed in adult mouse testis but weakly expressed in the spleen and thymus. The MSRG-11 gene was expressed at various levels, faintly at two weeks postpartum and strongly from three weeks postpartum in adult testes. The green fluorescence produced by pEGFP-C2/MSRG-11 was detected in the cytoplasm of COS7 cells 24 h post-transfection. The pcDNA3.1(?-)/MSRG-11 plasmid was constructed and introduced into COS7 cells using Lipofectamine 2000 transfection reagent (Invitrogen, Carlsbad, USA). MSRG-11 can accelerate COS7 cell apoptosis, which suggests that this gene may play an important role in the development of mouse testes and is a candidate gene of testis-specific apoptosis. Based on these observations, it was considered that we cloned a new gene which probably accelerates spermatogenetic cell apoptosis in mouse.

Genetic selection for health traits using producer-recorded data. I. Incidence rates, heritability estimates, and sire breeding values.

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of genetic selection for health traits in dairy cattle using data recorded in on-farm herd management software programs. Data regarding displaced abomasum (DA), ketosis (KET), mastitis (MAST), lameness (LAME), cystic ovaries (CYST), and metritis (MET) were collected between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2003 in herds using Dairy Comp 305, DHI-Plus, or PCDART herd management software programs. All herds in this study were either participants in the Alta Genetics (Watertown, WI) Advantage progeny testing program or customers of the Dairy Records Management Systems (Raleigh, NC) processing center. Minimum lactation incidence rates were applied to ensure adequate reporting of these disorders within individual herds. After editing, DA, KET, MAST, LAME, CYST, and MET data from 75,252 (313), 52,898 (250), 105,029 (429), 50,611 (212), 65,080 (340), and 97,318 (418) cows (herds) remained for analysis. Average lactation incidence rates were 0.03, 0.10, 0.20, 0.10, 0.08, and 0.21 for DA, KET, MAST, LAME, CYST, and MET (including retained placenta), respectively. Data for each disorder were analyzed separately using a threshold sire model that included a fixed parity effect and random sire and herd-year-season of calving effects; both first lactation and all lactation analyses were carried out. Heritability estimates from first lactation (all lactation) analyses were 0.18 (0.15) for DA, 0.11 (0.06) for KET, 0.10 (0.09) for MAST, 0.07 (0.06) for LAME, 0.08 (0.05) for CYST, and 0.08 (0.07) for MET. Corresponding heritability estimates for the pooled incidence rate of all diseases between calving and 50 d postpartum were 0.12 and 0.10 for the first and all lactation analyses, respectively. Mean differences in PTA for probability of disease between the 10 best and 10 worst sires were 0.034 for DA, 0.069 for KET, 0.130 for MAST, 0.054 for LAME, 0.039 for CYST, and 0.120 for MET. Based on the results of this study, it appears that genetic selection against common health disorders using data from on-farm recording systems is possible.

[Changes in the nutritional status of the lactating women during exclusive lactation].

In order to evaluate the influence of breast feeding upon selected nutritional parameters of lactating women, several anthropometric and biochemical measurements were performed during the interval between 40 and 180 postpartum days in 54 women in full and satisfactory nursing. Only one significant change was detected in measurements done for nutritional assessment: loss of body weight. No changes were detected in hemoglobin levels or in serum protein and albumin. There was high variability in body weight changes with a mean loss of 1.5 kg due especially to a loss in fat body mass and, in a lesser proportion, to loss in lean body mass. The mean food intake did not change during the observation period. The mean caloric intake was 2,771 cal/day at the beginning and 2,737 cal/day in the end of the study. A significant correlation was established between the individual energetic intake and the body weight changes of lactating women. The allowance of 2,750 cal/day suggested by FAO/WHO for lactating women seems adequate for the health of women in a normal nutritional condition, but apparently insufficient to overcome undernutrition in women who initiate lactation with this condition. In spite of the small nutritional impact observed, our results support the need for food supplementation programs destined to lactating women, with special orientation to undernourished women of low socioeconomic level.

[The critical period in natural fertility].

In order to learn the natural expectancy period of first pregnancy as well as the influences of some biosocial variables, a clinical-retrospective study was performed within 1120 gravida I women. All of them attended the major institutes of health care in Mexico City (IMSS, ISSSTE, SS and DDF). Data were obtained by means of predetermined questions from subjects after the first postpartum hours. None of them had previously used any contraceptive method. Results showed age at the first pregnancy: 21.6 +/- 3.8 (years); gestational interval 22.1 +/- 19.9 (months) and a 67% achievement rate the following twelve months of sexual activity. Eutocia was seen in 54% of these population and significant linear correlation was attained between age of the patient and the gestational interval. It seems that this is the first information regarding the fertility critical period within our society.

Randomized controlled trial to determine effects of prenatal breastfeeding workshop on maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy and breastfeeding duration.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a prenatal breastfeeding workshop on maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy and breastfeeding duration. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Large tertiary hospital in Ontario, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: 110 primiparous women expecting a single child, an uncomplicated birth, and planning to breastfeed. INTERVENTION: 2.5-hour prenatal breastfeeding workshop based on adult learning principles and self-efficacy theory. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy and the numbers of days and amount of breastfeeding were measured at four and eight weeks postpartum. RESULTS/DATA ANALYSIS: Over time, maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy scores increased in both groups. Women who attended the workshop had higher self-efficacy scores and a higher proportion were exclusively breastfeeding compared to women who did not attend the workshop. There was little difference in the average number of days of breastfeeding, but the intervention group had less weaning. CONCLUSIONS: The workshop increased maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy and exclusive breastfeeding.

Evaluation of rubella screening in pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: The rationale for rubella vaccination in the general population and for screening for rubella in pregnant women is the prevention of congenital rubella syndrome. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the prenatal rubella screening program in Quebec. METHODS: A historical cross-sectional study was designed. Sixteen hospitals with obstetric services were randomly selected, 8 from among the 35 "large" hospitals in the province (500 or more live births/year) and 8 from among the 50 "small" hospitals (fewer than 500 live births/year). A total of 2551 women were randomly selected from all mothers of infants born between Apr. 1, 1993, and Mar. 31, 1994, by means of stratified 2-stage sampling. The proportions of women screened and vaccinated were ascertained from information obtained from the hospital chart, the physician's office and the patient. RESULTS: The overall (adjusted) screening rate was 94.0%. The rates were significantly different between large and small hospitals (94.4% v. 89.6%). Five large hospitals and one small hospital had rates above 95.0%. The likelihood of not having been screened was statistically significantly higher for women who had been pregnant previously than for women pregnant for the first time (4.8% v. 1.4%; p < 0.001). Of the 200 women who were seronegative at the time of screening (8.4%), 79 had been vaccinated postpartum, had a positive serological result on subsequent testing or did not require vaccination, and 59 had not been vaccinated postpartum; for 62, subsequent vaccination status was unknown. INTERPRETATION: Continued improvement in screening practices is needed, especially in small hospitals. Because vaccination rates are unacceptably low, it is crucial that steps be taken to address this issue.

Effect of a once-daily suckling program on gastrointestinal parasitism in Angus cows and calves.

Over a 2-year period involving a total of 168 Angus cows and their calves, 2 studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of once-daily suckling on cow reproduction, calf growth, and gastrointestinal parasitism. Experiment I compared 2 restricted suckling (RS) groups with 1 normal suckling (NS) group. Each group consisted of 24 cows with their calves (24 cows-calves/group = 24 cows and 24 calves/group). In the RS groups, suckling by the calves was restricted to once a day for 45 days, and then the calves were allowed to suckle normally throughout the remainder of the experiment. In the NS group, the calves suckled normally throughout the experiment. Experiment II compared 2 groups of RS cow-calves (24 cow-calves/group) with 2 groups of 24 NS cow-calves/group. In experiment I, there were no differences (P less than 0.05) in pregnancy rate or in the average number of nematode eggs/g of feces (epg) between the cows from the 2 treatment groups. The RS calves consistently had higher epg counts than did the NS calves during the 45 days of RS (169 vs 62 epg, P less than 0.05) and from the time of their return to pasture until weaning (266 vs 186 EPG, P = 0.27). The RS calves also had a higher average coccidia oocyst count during the RS period only. In experiment II, RS cows had a higher pregnancy rate (87.6% vs 66.0%, P less than 0.05) and a shorter postpartum interval (83 vs 101 days, P less than 0.05) than did NS cows.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Barriers to timely prenatal care among women with insurance: the importance of prepregnancy factors.

OBJECTIVE: This study, designed to avoid methodologic limitations of previous research, aimed to identify the important noninsurance barriers to timely prenatal care. METHODS: We identified a subsample of a cross-sectional statewide representative postpartum survey conducted in California during 1994-1995, focusing on 3071 low-income women with Medi-Cal or private coverage throughout pregnancy. RESULTS: Twenty-eight percent of those women had untimely care, although only 6% were unaware of their pregnancies during the first trimester. Controlling for numerous sociodemographic factors; knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors; stressful life circumstances; and logistic obstacles that might deter seeking or receiving care, the following risk factors for untimely care were significant and experienced by more than one fifth of women: unwanted or unplanned pregnancy (affecting 43% and 66% of women, respectively), no regular provider before pregnancy (affecting 22% of women), and no schooling beyond high school (affecting 76% of women). Transportation problems, affecting 8% of women, appeared to be the only significant logistic barrier to timely care. CONCLUSION: Improving timeliness of prenatal care among low-income women with third-party coverage is likely to require broad social and health policies that focus on factors affecting women before pregnancy. Assistance with transportation could contribute to more timely care for some low-income women, but programs focusing primarily on other noninsurance barriers during pregnancy might not substantially improve the timeliness of care, at least among low-income women with third-party coverage.

Black teenage fathers: what happens when the child is born?

This study explored the changes in the lives of teenage fathers, from prenatally to 9 and 18 months postpartum, and compared them to a group of nonfather peers. At 18 months postpartum, more fathers were heads of households and fewer were still in school, although there were no differences in employment status. Although only 7.5% of the teenage parents were married, 37% lived together or had daily contact; only three had contact less often than weekly. In the 18 months since the first interview, there was a decrease in contact in 34%, an increase in contact in 19%, and no change in the frequency of contact in 46%. Two thirds of teenage fathers stayed with the mother during labor and 25% were in the delivery room. Only one father had no contact with his child 18 months later; 12% lived with the child and 25% saw the child daily. The most common reasons for not living with the child were that the baby was too young, finances, and problems in the relationship with the woman. This study demonstrates that the fathers appeared to suffer few adverse consequences of teenage pregnancy. However, the majority of fathers continued to be involved in the lives of the mother and child, and we believe they should be included in programs for teenage parents and their children.

Apoptosis (programmed cell death) in arteries of the neonatal lamb.

We have examined whether cell death contributes to postnatal remodeling of arteries in lambs. First, abdominal aortic smooth muscle cell proliferation rates fell from 2.87 +/- 0.08% per day at 3 days of age to 1.75 +/- 0.15% per day at 21 days. These proliferation rates would yield a 50% increase in DNA content in the absence of cell death. No increase in DNA content was observed (P < .05 for predicted versus measured accumulation); therefore, significant cell death was inferred. The same analysis did not indicate high cell-death rates in the carotid, renal, or iliac arteries; however, cell death was detected in situ by end-labeling partially degraded DNA with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase or by nuclear labeling with propidium iodide, a fluorescent dye that permeates only nonviable cells. Nuclei were labeled in all arteries, although labeling was most frequent in the abdominal aorta, a vessel that regresses substantially after birth. Cell death was apoptotic because DNA extracted from arteries and end-labeled with [32P]dCTP produced a series of low molecular weight bands (DNA ladder) on an agarose gel, a hallmark of apoptosis. The ladder was strong for neonatal abdominal aorta but weak for other arteries. Only weak laddering was observed for fetal abdominal aortas in late gestation, confirming that high apoptosis rates in this vessel were initiated after birth. Intense DNA ladders and frequent in situ labeling indicated high rates of apoptosis in the postnatal intra-abdominal umbilical artery, another vessel that regresses after birth. We conclude that apoptosis contributes to postpartum arterial remodeling. This contribution is greatest in arteries that regress after birth.

Training peer counselors to promote and support exclusive breastfeeding in Bangladesh.

Exclusive breastfeeding is rare in Bangladesh. About 90% of women have home deliveries, so the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative has no mechanism to reach them. Mother support groups do not exist, and community health workers do not have time to promote and support exclusive breastfeeding. To provide this kind of support at the community level, an area in Dhaka was selected for a peer-counseling intervention program. Using certain selection criteria, 1 woman from each community was trained as a peer counselor. The training was based on the World Health Organization/United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund 40-hour breastfeeding counseling course and related books. Counseling skills were taught using demonstrations and role play, followed by practical training in the project area. The intervention was very successful, as 70% of the mothers in the project area breastfed their infants exclusively for 5 months compared to only 6% in the control area. The authors describe the peer counseling training, strategies used for peer counseling visits, and lessons learned.

Environmental and physiological factors affecting mastitis at drying off and postcalving.

Duplicate milk samples from udder quarters were collected from 3987 cows when the cows were dried off and again postcalving. Samples were cultured for staphylococcal, Streptococci agalactiae, other streptococci species, and coliform organisms. Cows were treated with one of five dry cow therapy drugs or left as untreated controls after collection of samples at dry off. Cows treated with dry cow therapy drugs had more quarters cured during the dry period than did untreated control cows for all organisms considered. A program of dry cow treatment plus teat dipping was superior to dry cow treatment only, teat dipping only, or neither. Cows were more vulnerable to mastitis infections with increasing age. Month of year of drying off affected mastitis infection, although trends were erratic and varied by organism. Mastitis infections at dry off under different herd management systems of type of milking equipment, type of milking facility, and type of housing were dependent on the organism. Management systems had little influence on mastitis infections postcalving. Higher producing cows had fewer mastitis infections when dried off, but milk production the previous lactation had little influence on mastitis infections postcalving.
