Subjects were 20 volunteers randomly selected from all female undergraduate students attending a local university, who were 21 years of age or older, and living off campus. The stimuli consisted of seven films, of approximately 5 minutes duration each, which depicted various types of human sexual behavior. Themes included "romantic" heterosexual behavior, primarily genital heterosexual behavior, a mild, and an explicit form of group-sex behavior, a mild and explicit form of heterosexual sadomasochistic behavior, and male homosexuality. Subjects rated the degree of sexual arousal experienced for each film on a 50-point Likert scale. The order of presentation of the films for each subject was randomized, and all subjects participated individually with only a female experimenter present. Following the rating period, subjects completed the Sex Knowledge and Attitude Test (9). Finally, a structured interview was conducted to probe specific likes and dislikes with respect to the content of the films viewed. Results indicated that rank order ratings of the films, from most to least sexually stimulating, was: heterosexual, romantic; group-sex mild (two males and one female); heterosexual-genital; group-sex explicit (three males and three females); sadomasochism (mild); sadomasochism-explicit (forcing and brutal); and male homosexuality. One conclusion that the data led to was that females preferred and were significantly more sexually stimulated by films in which a male related to a female (even if the male was treating the female cruelly) than they were by homosexual stimuli involving two males together. Correlational data between the rating responses and the Sex Knowledge and Attitude Test yielded much information including significant negative correlations between ratings of both group-sex films and rejection of sexual myths. Also, significant positive correlations were found between rated degree of sexual stimulation for the heterosexual and the group-sex films and the consideration of pre- and extramarital relations as acceptable or even desirable.
Usually Heinrich Romberg is credited with having established tabes dorsalis as a clinicopathological entity in the 1840s. But Romberg's teacher, Ernst Horn (1774 to 1848), had inspired five different students to write their doctoral dissertations on the same subject. These five theses, published between 1817 and 1827, as well as M. Steinthal's most comprehensive later description, were triggered by Horn's observation of the lower spinal cord atrophy which he found in one of his tabetic patients at autopsy. The dissertations are analyzed together with the prior literature reflected in them as it deals with the spinal cord. Discussions of the putative influence of the spinal cord on the vagaries of male sexual function, and vice versa, began with "consumption of the backbone", referred to in the Hippocratic corpus. "Venery"--if not veneral disease as we understand it--was thought throughout the centuries to be the prime cause of tabes. One may presume that the rising concern with public health and with national aims--a kind of "moral rearmament"--caused the subject to be so vigorously pursued by members of the young medical generation in early 19th-century Germany.
Lithium carbonate was used to treat behavioral disorders in two mentally retarded patients. Although improvement was noted in the behaviors, cognitive performance, measured with the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, showed a decline, which was related to the serum lithium level. The implication of these changes is discussed.

Plasma noradrenaline (NA) concentrations and the activity of its synthetic enzyme, dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH), were determined during sexual activity in one male subject on three occasions. Blood was obtained through an intravenous catheter by means of a peristaltic pump and an automatic fraction collector. NA was significantly (P less than 0.001) related to stages of sexual arousal and erection quality. Maximal arousal and erection was accompanied by plasma NA concentration 100% to 1200% higher than basal levels. NA levels also increased significantly with upright posture and with emotional stress. DBH activity did not correlate closely with sexual arousal and erection.

This case study supports the plea by a number of psychiatrists for thorough psychiatric and psychologic screening of all persons seeking sexual reassignment surgery. The patient, a female impersonator taking estrogen, was seriously considering such an operation in order to cope with identity problems and an inability to achieve gratification in life. His psychiatric and psychologic evaluations indicated that his profession and desire for anatomic change were more a reflection of a borderline personality than true feminine gender identity.

A case of atypical autoerotic death is described. An 18-year-old white man clad in two brassieres was found dead in his bedroom by his brother. Two wet green terry cloths were under the brassiere cups, connected to the house current via two metal washers and a bifid electrical cord. Literature depicting nude women was found near the victim. Autopsy revealed second-degree and third-degree burns of the mammary regions. Death was attributed to accidental self-electrocution. The authors will discuss typical and atypical forms of autoerotic death.
BACKGROUND: Penile fracture is not a frequent event. It consists of rupture of the tunica albuginea of the corpora cavernosa. Fracture occurs when the penis is erect, as the tunica is very thin and not flexible. METHODS: This prospective study was carried out over a period of 1 year and included 12 patients presenting with penile fracture. RESULTS: Diagnosis was made clinically, and there was no need to perform cavernosography in any case. The most common cause of fracture was trauma to the erect penis during intercourse. Mean age of patients was 29.5 (+8.96) years, and mean time of presentation was 15.5 (+8.04) hours. Subcoronal circumferential degloving incision was done in all cases. Nine patients were operated on, and three patients refused surgery and were treated conservatively. Repair consisted of evacuation of hematoma and repair of the tunical defect with absorbable sutures. The mean operative time was 33.9 (+8.2) minutes. Preoperative and postoperative antibiotics were used, and all operated cases were discharged on the second postoperative day. All operated cases were able to achieve full erection with straight penis except one, in whom mild curvature and pain during erection was observed. CONCLUSION: Penis fracture is a true urologic emergency. It should be treated surgically as early as possible to ensure a better outcome.
When we acknowledge our purpose as the essence of our self, when we take all our power into use in an effortless way, and when we fully accept our own nature--including sex and sexuality, our purpose of life takes the form of a unique talent. Using this talent gives the experience of happiness. A person in his natural state of being uses his core talent in a conscious, joyful, and effortless way, contributing to the world the best he or she has to offer. Full expression of self happens when a person, in full acceptance of body and life, with whole-hearted intension, uses all his personal powers to realize his core talent and all associated talents, to contribute to his beloved and to the world. Thus, self-actualisation is a result of a person fully expressing and realizing his core talent. The theory of talent states that a core talent can be expressed optimally when a human being takes possession of a three-dimensional space with the axis of purpose, power and gender, as we have a threefold need: Acknowledging our core talent (our purpose of life) and intending it; Understanding our potential powers and manifesting them; Accepting our human form including our sex and expressing it. The first dimension is spiritual, the next dimension is mental, emotional and physical, and the third dimension is bodily and sexual. We manifest our talents in a giving movement from the bottom of our soul trough our biological nature onto the subject and object of the outer world. These three dimensions can be drawn as three axes, one saggital axis called purpose or love or me-you, one vertical axis called power or consciousness (light) or heaven-earth, and one horizontal axis called gender or joy or male-female. The three core dimensions of human existence are considered of equal importance for expression of our life purpose, life mission, or core talent. Each of the dimensions is connected to special needs. When these needs are not fulfilled, we suffer and if this suffering becomes unbearable we deny the dimension or a part of is. This is why the dimensions of purpose, power and gender become suppressed from our consciousness.
